The Cowboys - Original Theatrical Trailer

Ойын-сауық

One of screen icon John Wayne's finest twilight films, The Cowboys was a box-office hit in 1972 and controversial in the movie career of Wayne (but you'll have to see it to understand why!).John Wayne stars as a rancher who will lose his livestock unless he can transform a ragtag bunch of schoolboys into cowboys. When all his ranch hands go off in search of gold, the veteran rancher is forced to hire eleven teenage boys as trail hands, and in the process of driving 1200 cattle across 400 rough miles, the young cowboys become cowmenDirected by Mark Rydell, the excellent cast also includes Bruce Dern, Roscoe Lee Browne, Colleen Dewhurst, and teenagers Robert Carradine and A Martinez.

This is a timeless classic of John Wayne’s and a favorite of mine. He’s so good at not only teaching those boys to be cowboys but also takes on a father image to them. He even called them his children. His relationship with his wife is awesome. The cook was also a very interesting character. And then there’s the rustler played by Bruce Dern. He almost always has a bad guy role but he’s so good at it!!!!

From what I heard he said “America will hate you for killing John Wayne.” Dern said “Yeah, but they’ll love me at Berkeley.” Look what a cesspool that entire area has become from such anti-American sentiments. Arguably 90% of the state.

Imagine being a movie exec back in the early '70s and a writer walks in... Writer: "I have a screenplay, an old herder is short of men and hires boys and turns them into men on the trail." Exec: "I like it, anyone in mind for the lead?" Writer: "Yes sir, none other than The Duke." Exec: "Oooh, I like it. Got a villain in mind?" Writer: "Yes sir, an up and coming young actor named Bruce Dern." Exec: "Oooh. I like him. Not much work, but he's been a good villain in Hang 'em High and Gunsmoke. This is awesome, can we start shooting soon?" Writer: "Yes sir, as soon as I get an okay from anyone to finance the movie. Each investor I've shown the script to in the past had a change of heart when I tell them The Duke is killed in this movie." Exec: ".......(Blank stare)...." Writer: "Sir?" Exec: "Get the hell out my office!!"

I never saw this movie before, but I can tell you it is one of the best movies of all time. Not only the presence of THE DUKE, but also how he trained those young boys to be tough ranchers. Oh my God, the boys back then ( I mean the 70s) were more polite than these days, and they're ready to fight for what they were trained for. KUDOS for THE DUKE and the pretty brave boys.

This is Lori Bach. This movie is a classic and demonstrates that young children "back in the day" were not given toys to entertain themselves. They were taught life skills early on and weren't treated like children, they way we do today. Look at what our collegiate educational system has produced as of late - DIAPER PINS & SAFE PLACES.

Saw an interview with Dern about this... he stated that he is quite liberal and John Wayne warned him that a lot of people were going to dislike him for shooting The Duke... Dern replied, "But a lot of people at Berkeley are going to like me". Pretty much sums up Berkeley for me. Dern certainly could play the penultimate bad guy... excellent actor.

If there was anything controversial, it may have pertained to Roscoe Lee Browne as the black cook and the use of the "N" word. The treatment of one of the boys by Bruce Dern was also jarring, though necessary to bring the viewer along and central to the plot. It also justified their vengeance, including their emotional detachment when Dern meets his end. The essence of the movie was boys growing to men and a fatherless man (Wayne) treating them (and teaching them) like sons. The only spot in the film that rang false for me was the means Wayne used for curing the boy who stuttered. The fact that the scene would be viewed as politically incorrect is not what bothers me, but more that it was rather hokey and cliched. One of my all-time favorite movies...
