The Country House Built On Top Of A 1000-Year-Old Monastery | American Viscountess | Real Royalty

0:00:04 - American Viscountess continues with a visit to the wonderful Cerne Abbey - the most beautiful historic house nestled in the enchanting village of Cerne Abbas in deepest Dorset. A former Benedictine monastery, dating back to 987, Cerne Abbey has been the home of Michael and Barbara Fulford Dobson and their family for the past 50 years. Barbara is the most wonderful artist and Michael gave a lifetime of service to Her Majesty the Queen. Julie Montagu, Viscountess Hinchingbrooke, joins the family to find out what it’s like living alongside 1000 years of history.
0:38:56 - Mapperton House in West Dorset has been the ancestral seat of the Earls of Sandwich since the 1950s, when the Montagu family moved from Hinchingbrooke House in Cambridgeshire. Dorset has therefore always held a very special place in the family’s history. So join Julie Montagu, Viscountess Hinchingbrooke as she delves into the archives to trace the origins of the Montagu family and explore their ties to this beautiful part of Britain.

I just loved this video. You and your team did a wonderful job pulling it all together. It was absolutely fascinating! I also loved seeing the Montagu information and the ancestral home that that your beautiful distant American relation may have lived for a time. I think I thought that she lived in Mapperton but that wasn’t true but she found Mapperton a beautiful home, that’s wonderful! Sincerely, Wade Hudgins in Rosa, AL, USA. God Bless

Great armchair viewing and learning the history from your visits to other historical homes, not to mention the work you are working on for your family history. Fascinating, love, ♥love ♥your videos. I feel for the coldness of these stately homes when you have to wear, hats, heavy jumpers, and hand warmers, but never complain. Thank you for sharing with us your love of all things heritage, it is truly appreciated.

Hello Julie, I love your videos! I have been obsessed with castles and old houses ever since I was a little girl many years ago. I have two questions: The owners of Cerne Abbey mentioned an archaeological dig in their meadow, in the near future, to try and determine what and where the original foundations of the 10th century abbey were. Is that dig now in progress, and will you be filming and narrating it? Also, in your conversation with your father-in-law at Mapperton, you talk about the Bolton Properties in the Montague family. Are these connected to Bolton Abbey, owned by the Duke of Devonshire and still used as a hunting lodge by that family? There are no photos or videos of Bolton Abbey accessible to the public that I can find. Thank you for doing what you do and sharing it with us!!

So Interesting! I actually went Hooke park a lot in mid 2000s for architectural model making and exploring the forest and near by fields and villages. I must have seen your house from far distance as well. It is so nice to see the scenery again where is still pictured in my heart!!

Why don't you ever mention the Dukes of Manchester in depth, the present being Alexander Charles David Drogo Montagu, 13th Duke of Manchester who is the present head of the House of Montagu to which the Earls of Sandwich belong? also the Dukes of Manchester's Seat Kimbolton Castle and their various other seats?

Maybe make a story about H&M helping the Ulvade community. Haven’t heard anything about that. Put a smile on these families faces that are desperate for any joy especially after the horrific school massacre. It would be nice to see what they are doing to help raise money so these kids can get back to normal

Makes me so sad and sick how these beautiful monastic estates built for the glory of God to serve the people were stolen and enjoyed by the selfish few while the people died in poverty.
