The Countless Apocalypses of Innistrad - The Unknown Side of MTG

Ойындар

Of the various planes in the multiverse of Magic the Gathering, few are as instantly recognizable as Innistrad. This plane is themed heavily around eighteenth century Germany with influences from various cultures and regions of Europe. What makes it more distinct compared to other eurocentric planes like the Prague inspired Ravnica is the heavy theming of Innistrad. Beyond being a German plane, Innistrad is the Gothic Horror plane with many creatures and cards serving as direct homages to the classics of the genre. The popularity of Innistrad’s horror theming has made it a frequent setting for main set storylines with iconic characters staving off a new apocalypse almost every visit.

    An Innistrad farmer gets out of bed, looks out of the window and sees a tide of living metal and corrupted oil rolling over the hills. He sighs, finishes his mornig coffee and goes to grab his favorite pitchfork. "Mondays." he grumbles.

    To be fair (and something that Logs didn't mention) is that the effort of creating Avacyn left Sorin in a exceptionally weakened state, requiring him to take a very extended rest. This, combined with the protection from Avacyn, had unknowingly blocked her communication to him. While Sorin was a dick to Nahiri, she was also extremely unwilling to understand his desire to protect his plane and felt that she needed to make a show of force to get him to recognize her as worth paying attention to.

    To be more precise, what angered Nahiri was not that Sorin didn't care about Eldrazi (as he did, since he did come back to stop the Eldrazi in the Zendikar block), but his lack of effort and foresight. Sorin was a friend and mentor to Nahiri before that, he was the one who showed her the ropes and accompanied her, and the two tried to stop the Eldrazi even before meeting Ugin (although it was later retconned in them somehow never wanting to kill the titans), but Sorin had an aloof and somewhat cruel nature. He accompanied her, but never put too much effort (one example was the fact he never told her about the fact that, back then, planeswalkers could reform their bodies at will, because it simply never occurred to him to). When the Eldrazi were almost liberated, Nahiri herself had been getting more aloof, but the almost literal wake-up call convinced her to look for her old friend, and rescue him from his cold attitude. When she arrived Sorin was recovering from the creation of Avacyn and the Hellvault (and him being still weakened was the reason Nahirii was a tough fight for him), which weren't just meant to protect Innistrad's humans but use what he had learned to shield the plane from Eldrazi (it was a deliberate effect, and the reason Emrakul couldn't appear as long as Avacyn was around and Nahiri, no longer god-like after the mending, corrupted her so that Sorin would have been forced to unmake her). However, while hiding to recover he had unwittingly left himself deaf to any eventual warning from Zendikar. It was that Sorin didn't care about the Eldrazi in general, he had seen Nahiri come with the situation already resolved so didn't see anything to worry about and, what actually angered Nahiri into attacking, he candidly admitted that he just didn't think about the consequences of making himself unavailable, reminding her of the times he had shown that same attitude in their time traveling together.

    I'm hoping the story keeps visiting other planes rather than going back to the same few, like Innistrad, Ravnica, and Dominaria. There's a whole multiverse out there with a limitless amount of planes to go to.

  • @BeaglzRok1

    @BeaglzRok1

    Same. Dominaria has been considered well-traveled even fifteen years ago. Ravnica has had to deal with the Decamillennial, the Dragon Maze, the mistake known as the War of the Spark, and the Phyrexian invasion. Innistrad has had to deal with everything in the video, and I'll say that Shadow Over Innistrad/Eldritch Moon weren't executed well. Even Zendikar has had three sets that are basically "Zendikar: Rise of the Eldrazi," "Zendikar 2: Eldrazi Boogaloo," and "Zendikar 3: Aftermath," when it was supposed to be the D&D-adventuring plane like Shandalar from the 90's computer game. They know they can come up with new ones like with Amonkhet, Ixalan, Ikoria, and Kaldheim, but Creative doesn't seem to be very good at making a planar setting that isn't just a single city or country that's supposedly the standard for the entire plane that is also appealing to their audience. Like my DM did in our Ravnica game, sure District 10 is the central city where every faction is headquartered and represented, but what about somewhere a several dozen kilometers away? Say on the opposite side of Utvara, where the guilds might not be so balanced. Doesn't really check out, logistically, that it'd be EXACTLY the same there, so in the campaign, following the Decamillennial two districts (which we called District 3 and District 4) effectively polarized. D3 has all of the Black-aligned guilds (plus the neutral-Blue guilds like the Simic and Izzet) that's fairly chaotic on account of rampant selfishness and ambition, to the point where everyone figured they should just kick out the Orzhov in their own self-interest. Meanwhile, D4 is all four White guilds in a regimented block of order, most notably "led" by the Orzhov bankrolling the majority of services with a chip on their shoulder from what happened in D3. Everything's still there, but there's a fresh dynamic to it that isn't "everyone has to team up to fight the outside force because friendship and diversity."

    @@BeaglzRok1 I completely agree, man. I'll go along with planes that are entirely one city since, as far as I'm aware, we don't know how big these planes are, so ones like Ravnica could just be pretty small comparatively. To be honest, I think War of the Spark was handled much better than the latest Phyrexian invasion. It wasn't good of course, and I really hate how Nicol Bolas was taken down because Gideon believed in the goodness of Liliana's heart. At the very least she should've died, but nope, good ol' Super Boy Scout to the rescue. My favourite planes are Theros and Alara, and a big portion of that enjoyment comes from having just a block or two of really good storytelling, rather than a bunch of blocks and sets using the same characters in the same locations.

    My idea for the next Innistrad set -- bare with me -- is to make it the Steampunk set. Hear me out. From a literary perspective there is precedent for this. Authors' of gothic horror like Bram Stoker and Robert Stevenson were contemporaries of writers in the scientific romanticism genre. You have elements of scientific romanticism in Innistrad like with the necro-alchemists and thermo-alchemists. This is important because steampunk was influenced by scientific romanticism. Much like you have you have these genres leading into each other over the course of literary history when we next return to Innistrad we see the plane changed. As a source of consistency though everyone can keep the same hats they have always worn. The lore reason for this is that humans were the faction that emerged the strongest after the Phyrexian invasion. The undead were one of the most successful forces against the Phyrexians so by extension human necromancers became crucial to the planes defense as seen the March of Machine storyline. Liesa who has returned to the plane seeing this effectiveness helped broker peace between different human factions of humans with her sister Sigarda. Necromancers of both varieties no longer have to rob the graves of the deceased for raw material instead using the many bodies of the now deactivated phyrexians. The necro-alchemists use this new source of advanced technology on dead phyrexians to reverse engineer new technologies and use that research in the rebuilding of Innistrads' cities. Humans who formerly lived in rural towns destroyed by the invasion flood into the cities providing the labor needed to construct new metropolitan expansion and factories. The dark forces of Innistrad -- also devastated by the Phyrexians -- find their original human prey more fortified and united than ever before. For the first time in Innistrad's history humans are now the dominant force on the plane. The steampunk aspect comes in from the technological advancement originating from the Phyrexians. Massive factories dot Innistrad's cities. Lantern lit cobblestone roads no longer connect Innistad's human settlements having been replaced by gaslights and iron rails. Every technology is now powered by industry, steam, and captured lightning. Werewolves are now captured and held in Barnum-esque circuses with other beasts of Innistrad to be gawked at instead of feared. Vampires are forced to risk preying only on the dregs of human society -- I'm thinking of Vampire Jack the Ripper. Zombies now perform much of the dangerous labor in cities with their population being kept in check by dangerous industrial accidents like getting crushed in giant machine cogs and walk the streets as a working class (as a joke there can be a zombie suffrage movement). Necromancers are civil servants using their powers to supply a cheap source of labor. Fewer spirits exist due to the improved quality of life and renewed faith in the Church of Sisters. Innistrad's old horrors are gone. Forgotten by the progress of technology. However, the body of an unknown sea creature is exposed on the shores of Nephalia due to the unexplained behavior of Innistrad's tides. It's wounds too large to be made by werewolf or demon. Innistrad's new crown jewel -- a massive submersible vessel is tasked to explore the deep and unexplored depths of Innistrad's oceans in search of an answer. All the while the silver moon lusters ominously above.

    The real issue with the larger 'balance' of Innistrad is that there are only Humans and Less Limited Humans meaning conflict is inevitable with Muggles at the bottom of the food chain, while the true Non-Humans that rise on the plane from time to time don't tend to coexist with those two groups. Sustainability was never an option at least not permanently.
