No movie can ever be the book. But this movie is so good it doesn’t have to be. It’s as true to the spirit of the book as any adaptation could be.

The books ending is bitter sweet. I won’t give away the ending, as I do think it should be experienced. But while the resolve of the entire journey is sad, it does offer two words to the survival of man kind. Hope and wait.

"What if I win and I don't want to be a smuggler?" "Then we slit your throat and we're a bit short-handed." "I find smuggling is the life for me and would be delighted to kill your friend, the maggot." I love lines like these that are delivered so casually. Reminds me of The Princess Bride a bit. Also Luigi Vampa is probably my favorite character.

This scene is very superficial. When Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn was released from a Soviet gulag, he was not a radiant person, he was a bitter man because of his suffering. When you read Kolyma Tales, by Varlam Shalamov, and Gulag Archipelago, by Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn, you see people who are bitter about living in hell on earth. The screenwriter has no life to write about. Edmond in the book was an extremely bitter and spiteful person. And it was very superficial to try to justify that Mercedes married Mondego because she was pregnant, when in the book she was a virgin. At the time, virginity was common, she felt alone. Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn's first wife divorced him to marry Vsevolod Sergeevich Somov. because she feels alone. He never forgave her for that. When he was released, she came to him wanting a second chance, they remarry, but he is a bitter and bitter man towards her. He later abandons her for another woman and marries her as he did the count in the book. He abandons Mercedes for another woman, he is angry at Mercedes as Solzhenitsyn was angry at his first wife A screenwriter writing a lot of nonsense.poruqe has no life experience.

epic? With that horrible revenge? The real revenges were great vigils and extremely cruel. Even Mercedes itself was punished with loneliness by counting. He considered her to the end a traitor. Albert went to Africa to clear the name of his fmaília that was detsruido by the count, Mondego committed suicide when the count revealed its crimes and Mercedes finished alone and in the poverty. Villefort further exposed that he had a bastard son whom he attempted to kill, his wife and son were killed. The French version of 1979 was epic when it showed that the count was a true avenger who pitilessly destroyed his enemies.

I've seen people complain that it's nothing like the book and his revenge is much darker etc etc but CLEARLY they decided to approach Edmond's story at a different angle and the main theme running through the course of the story was that if you have faith, justice will prevail. You may like the movie. But there are so many adaptations, even more similar to the book, and that this is not taken into account as the best. It is considered like the best adaptations with alan badel of 1964 and jacques werber of 1979. The end is different, the count does not get mercedes, but with another woman, its revenges are more cruel. In the end he decides to forgive one of his enemies, the Danglars because the count indirectly caused the death of a child, Edward, son villefort's and he was remorseful. That is why he offers forgiveness. The French version of 1979 is more bitter and shows darker scenes from the book.

My all time favorite, it brings out various emotions and has everything you could possibly want in a book/movie. Great scene! Although the original was released in 1954. The 2002 version was amazing and Jim Caviezel played the role of Edmond Dante’s best. Thank you to French author Alexandre Dumas completed in 1844.

The best version is Le comte de Monte Cristo (1979) with jacques Weber. the French when I decide to adapt their classics in a serious way, they are supreme and no one can rival them. You can just feel the excitement and joy with him of being free . Now that's a mark of a great actor that can make you feel what he's feeling in the moment . Its ironic in this movie when JC , Edmund , says when he is in prison , there is no God and years later he ends up playing the Son of God .

@@MarginWalker culturally French. If you look at many books and movies you will see 4 characters always appear- the two friends, main character and his friend, and two women, one virtuous, the other opposite. Often the best friend will give way to main character once he realizes the virtuous woman loved him all along but he was after the other woman.
