The Cost of Modern ROLEX Submariner Ownership (Financial & Emotional)
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
In this video I wanted to share my thoughts on some of the emotional and financial costs that were associated with my ROLEX Submariner purchase, after a month of ownership. Hopefully, I'm not the only one with some of these feelings when buying a modern Rolex.

124060 is at 10,800 plus tax, 12,200 all in, I went grey and paid just under 15,000 to skip the line and ignore the AD hustle but this piece has been on my hit list for years
I'm 72, so will probably be taking the dirt nap if and when the Rolex AD in my market area calls me. Personally I have very little respect for Rolex AD's and absolutely none for the grey market pirates.

Just bite the bullet & buy one from a grey/used dealer. Life is too short to deprive yourself. I did the same after waiting years for my AD to take pity on me.

@@Brian-ee1gx Why wait for an AD who has no control over inventory anyway. They’d sell 1,000 watches per day if they could. Buy a grey market for a couple grand more and forget about it. It will still hold its value just fine and you get to the watch.
Somebody that’s is going to steal your Rolex won’t care a bit if you are a fairly large gentleman , be careful and aware of your surroundings always.
Congrats on the Sub! It truly is one of the most iconic watches. But you also make some other very important points. And that is no one should ever go into debt to make such a purchase! Many of us have other financial responsibilities; and it is important that we all make wise decisions. I would say to anyone before buying a Rolex.....make sure you reconcile your thoughts before pulling the trigger. Sometimes, human nature being what it is, we think we want something simply because it is so difficult to obtain. But, the truth is, there are many other luxury watch brands that are more affordable, comparable in quality, and readily available! I love the physical watches (Rolex). But the brand image now days could be a lot better.

Brand Image? By that do you mean that Rolex could start selling Subs to people who want them to wear instead, or what Rolex does most of the time now, to people who only want them to flip them on Chrono24. What are we now, late May2023 and I see over 500 2023 Rolex Submariners on just Chrono24 for sale. And only $8K over MSRP.
The intro to this video was fantastic. You discussed some often overlooked topics of a Rolex purchase. Congratulations on your new Submariner, wear in good health. Take care.
I got a few rolex reps. Reason being, would rather pay 500 for a high tier and regret than to get a genuine model for 10grand and then regret. The financial cost for the latter simply doesn't make sense to me. I know its a matter of time before i get bored of a new item.
Good stuff. Same thing for me after 2.5 years just recently. I got the date version Sub and sold my BB58 because I didn't like not having a date during the day. Bought 2 Omegas from my AD prior too which probably helped.
Great Video Toran and it would be fun to see the comparison video.

Just picked one up yesterday for my birthday! Only I got the date model, I had the one in your video in the 80's.After being told I would go on a wait list three days ago (for at least a year) they magically produced one yesterday when I took my wife in to pick one out for her they said they thought they would have sometime in the Spring. After some small talk, my wife was having some of her jewelery cleaned and some champagne they walk over to me, lift the gloves off the tray and said, 'Happy Birthday!' It was a GREAT surprise and I love it.
I have a Submariner Date that I purchased from an Authorized dealer in the Bahamas in 2004 for about 5k US. The wife and I just walked in off the street and bought it on a whim. I have had it service twice now (by an authorized dealer), both complete overhauls that cost over $1000.00 each time (ouch) I definitely need to start taking better care of it. It is a great watch and I wear it everyday, as such it gets pretty beat up but the good news is that when you send it for service they buff right out. Enjoy
a comparison between the Grand Seiko and the Sub would be awesome!
Great perspective! Thanks
Thank You for your interesting thoughts, and all so true 👍
I'm on the waitlist at my local AD. I've wanted a Sub since the first time I held one in the early 2000s. At the time I considered buying one but put the money towards my first house instead. I've recently bought a BBPro and found myself just staring at it last night. When I picked it up a couple of months back I tried on a Sub and I actually didn't get the fuzzy feeling that I did back in the early 2000s. I think it's partly because you can get better divers for less money these days.

I think it's a good point and very few youtubers touch on this... Not only do you have to spend say £5000 to get yourself up the "wait list", then you drop a big amount on the sub - and if you've been waiting 2 years, the price may have gone up, plus in future you'll end up servicing it. And right now, many people are saying the 3230 movement is inherently flawed, with some saying every one of them is destined to lose time after 10 months on wrist and some folks saying that their 2020 OP's have been for servicing TWICE - that's almost once per year since release! Rolex isn't a cheap game to get into. I've got an OP and my partner does too, but if it becomes unreliable, I think I'll be looking towards a micro-brand that can be serviced for very affordable prices. Cheers, and enjoy your sub!
Well done for getting the sub, but wow, that GS looks amazing!
Sold my Hulk 2 years ago. I travel for work alot and sometimes to places that are a bit sketchy. The green sub did get some unnecessary attention and I didn't feel safe wearing it in some places (in my opinion). I only wear my PAM 1312 for traveling these days 😅. Like your video very honest.

Congrats on the new sub brother 👏 I’m still on the list for a new Rolex sub. However I ended up picking up a preceramic sub. Therefore I’m canceling the new one as I’m tired of playing the waiting game and for me the preceramic wears better on my wrist.

Interesting and thoughtful points. Love the FXD but maybe this is a worthwhile tradeoff which wouldn't be true if you acquired a lesser timepiece, as its hard to argue with a no-date sub. Yes, would love to see a comparison between the 14060 and the GS Quartz Divers. It happened a long time ago, but I think there are still today some deep-rooted feelings amongst the Swiss about what happened during the quartz crisis. I love that Rolex and GS are so different and come at watchmaking or more correctly, watch selling, from different corners of the planet! I hope we continue to have both as together they have enriched the horological milieu.

One thing I will say on the point of being vigilant while wearing a watch, I think a lot of the attention is drawn by the bracelets, as it’s more shiny material that catches the eye. I think throwing it on a strap of some kind reduces that attention grabbiness quite a bit.
Great piece! Love it.
Waited 3 months with no purchase history for my 124060 in 2022. I love it, but you really need to be careful when you wear it out.
Love my no date sub. it's my only watch. Had it now for 10 years ,got it before all the madness of prices going up 😊
Congrats on the sub! but I love the FXD. I feel your pain though, I recently bought a Omega Seamaster 300m diver white dial and I had to trade in my Oris Aquis calibre 400 green dial and some day I hope to get it back.

Your Submariner - or just about any Rolex Oyster Chronometer is NOT a luxury watch but horologic instrument made to help navigate or locate you on earth at any time - at any second, while your Submariner was made to preserve a diver's life. I do not own a Submariner and probably never will since I am not a diver but my knowing how a Rolex and Tudor dive watches are made, I jealously say that you have the best dive watch made. Much is said about the Breguet, Patek, or Vacheron, etc. but there can not be a substitute for what a dive watch has to be.
The list does not matter how long you have been on it, nor how many purchases you have through them. You can be on the list for 1 week and have no purchases with them and be selected just the same. That is at least how the AD explained it to me. However true that might be,
Just curious- how and where do you sell your watches? Thanks
That GS SBGX117 is really sharp! I wasn‘t aware of it, really nice look and size, and with a 9F movement.

Congratulations on your submariner, great video.
I’m torn on the Sub. I like it for the overall design and because of my love for 1962’s Dr. No with Sean Connery, who wears the Sub in the movie, but the wait times are brutal. Then again, I fear that if I get a Black Bay or Pelagos instead, I will still want the Sub for those reasons mentioned.
@EverydayWatchGuy

I would wait it out, if the Sub is truly the watch you're hoping to get. A Tudor is a great alternative, but it probably won't scratch that itch long-term.
The sub is the best of the bunch awesome purchase congrats . Love the FXD as well
Purchasing a stainless steel Rolex sports watch at retail these days is probably one of the safest ways to park or invest your money in a durable/tangible (and portable) good to keep up with and/or stay ahead of inflation. And, you can wear it and enjoy it in the meantime. In other words, it's not an irresponsible purchase, provided you can afford it, and not risk going into debt over it. And, that Submariner (124060) specifically is arguably THE most iconic sports watch of all time. Steve McQueen (Submariner 5512) and James Bond (Submariner 6538 Big Crown and 5513) can't be wrong in their personal watch choices. Congratulations on the acquisition.
Buyers remorse can be a huge problem for me today. It wasn't really a problem years ago but today with so many micro brands and homage watches that are almost identical in looks and quality to the real thing, I have a big problem now spending thousands on a watch. All I can think of when I buy one is how many other watches I could have bought for the price of this one watch. Ultimately I get over it though and love and enjoy the watch.

True. I own a few Grand Seikos. But I recently bought an AV-8 watch and a Mondaine quartz watch. They only cost a couple hundred bucks each. And I love wearing them. They are comfortable to use daily. And more importantly, they are cheap enough that, if I scratch them, I won't get super upset about it. I can just buy a new one every year.
The only comment I will make with a Rolex is, they do tend to appreciate in value over time. I have a 1982 Submariner given to me on graduating University. It was purchased in Hong Kong for I believe $1,200 Cdn $ in 1983. As some may consider it vintage now and is a transitional model, from what I can tell, it would likely retail for $25,000 plus. Pretty good return on initial investment. Excellent condition as I don't wear it as much as I should, due to its worth. With luxury items also, comes the high price of servicing them, which is crazy, something else to keep in mind. All comes down to how much enjoyment you will receive in owning it. A Seiko likely keeps better time, Lol.

My own opinion is if you like a Rolex, buy it as soon as you can when the chance arrive. Because the price keeps going up every other year and when the model get refresh. Rolex is a very unique watch compared to other makers , it is still the watch that you eventually wear as you get older. 😂 You will grow to like them even more.
Nice acquisition. During daily wear, do you find the 70 hour power reserve keeps you from needing to wind the watch to keep it accurate for weeks at a time. I have to wind my Superocean once every few days of daily wear to keep it from losing too much time. If I do not wind it every few days I can lose up to 20 seconds a day. Congratulations on owning the Sub man. It's a big achievement. Especially given the availability the ADs are restricting.
Perhaps an unpopular opinion but I really do feel the sub is over priced even at retail much less Grey market. Perhaps in the 90’s when it was a little cheaper and it had less competition but today there are so many alternatives for cheaper.
Please do the comparison between the Grand Seiko and Submariner!
Congrats and enjoy the sub, I'm sure you will not look back. Regrets are aplenty when it comes to watch collecting but they're not living beings.
If you get offered one at retail you need to say yes IMO. I understand the argument about Seamasters, Black bay etc offering better value. However, im not sure they do. If you ever had to sell your Submariner you’ll likely get what you paid for it back. If you sell the others youll probably lose 30-40%. Its an expensive hobby so be careful what you buy because one day you might want or need to sell.
I got offered one today after asking for it in December, I had to pass cause life circumstance changed and I’m sad but I love it I’ll get it soon. Or wait for a Pepsi
You can get them on grey market for that price.
I went to my authorised dealer this very morning, asked about a sub, it’s a big birthday next year in July so I thought that might put me in with a half chance of getting one in the next 12 months, well, I was told no chance at all, this is the state of play in the uk at present.

The Sub is a great watch, such an icon, but it's become somewhat ubiquitous, and many who buy one only do so because of its popularity. There are a lot of great options in a dive watch, many at a better price, and not as common as the Sub.
