The Cosmere 101 | Splinters & Slivers

Ойын-сауық

Throughout this channel’s brief existence, we’ve covered a plethora of topics regarding the Cosmere. From the basics of Investiture, to the different Worldhopper organisations, down to the weird and wacky world of Realmatic Theory. The Cosmere has a lot to offer and Brandon Sanderson seems to be happy just adding more and more to this fantasy universe. So today, we’ll be looking at another one of those interesting yet obscure Cosmere concepts. Yes, today we’ll be looking at Splinters and Slivers.
We’ll be briefly discussing what they are, how they form, and the different examples we know of in the existing Cosmere...

Some of the shorter, lighter videos are a nice, fun change of pace. But this, right here, is the type of content that keeps me coming back.

The Returned are just cognitive shadows, invested by Endowment. Basically Endowment's version of the Fused on Roshar.

Absolutely correct. But Endowment achieves this through bestowing on them a Divine Breath, which is a Splinter of Endowment.

@@callumts7679 Well, Zahel/Vasher explains it a bit in stormlight. Outside of that, you can look at the coppermind wiki on the returned. It'll have all of the references. Plus, I'm sure there are a lot of WOB on it.

@@callumts7679 That's because it's almost exclusively WOB. She wrote a letter to Hoid in one of the Stormlight epigraphs but it was just a guessing game that it was her that wrote it until it was confirmed by Sando. Even that says very little about the returned but it does give you some insight into Endowement's personality, some history of the shards and of Hoid.

Dude you're doing great work! I've shared you with like 3 of my friends now after getting them into the cosmere!!! Great job explaining things. I've loved the slow burn and deep dive style that Sanderson creates with the cosmere and I really appreciate your collection of artwork to give all of my mental images something to compare to!

Hey Raven. I really love that you’re composing cosmere related topics. I would like to say, sometimes it feels like you take too long to get to your point, using extensively long segues. I’m all for your talking being nice and slow paced. But all of the filler bits really deter me from finishing a video. Either way I love your project and willingness to share with everyone. Thanks for your hard work!

A fair point. I do try to get my videos as short as possible. I've found that if I make it too short and succinct then some viewers can't follow along or understand very well (for multiple different reasons, mostly because they're not very familiar with Cosmere concepts). So I have to balance it between being as short as I can make it, but also have enough explanation and information for everyone to understand and enjoy

I'm super late to this video, but I've heard something about Dalinar along the lines of "he can do things past bondsmiths couldn't do." Could this be, in part, due to Honor's cognitive shadow being bound to the Stormfather?

Can you start doing some theory and projection videos on upcoming Mistborn and Stormlight novels and make them with spoilers so we can talk more in the comments without ruining things for new Cosmerians? I think another cool topic would be theorizing why there is a depreciation of misting powers in each era and how that impacts the plot, while Feruchemy has a much less drop-off in efficacy (besides the obvious Sando answer that he wanted more problem solving and less Allomancy to solve problems for his characters).

RoW spoilers: He's going to be like Thanos was. Wants to accomplish something noble, but will go to any lengths to do it. So If doing the right thing for the greater good means that he has to outright genocide other people then he will do so. He's much more intelligent than Rayse was and much more cunning.

Vin never took up the power of the Well so in book 3 she wasn't a sliver right? Only taking it up & using the power would make a sliver. Tho she did then become Preservation. I still wonder what the hell Dalinar is. He probably isn't a sliver but I think the Storm Father is confirmed to be.

Yeah Stormfather is a Sliver. And The Well was the coalescence of Preservation's power. That alone was enough to make her a Sliver. But yeah she was Preservation too so that did the trick
