The Cosmere 101 | All Known Worldhoppers

Ойын-сауық

If you’ve read a fair amount of Cosmere books by Brandon Sanderson, you may have picked up that some characters appear in more than one of them, despite the two books being set in completely different worlds. When I first noticed this back when I was woefully unaware of the Cosmere and it’s larger workings, I thought Brandon Sanderson may have made a mistake or just included an easter egg. But then it happened again and I realised something is up here.
If you’re like I was then you may not have realised that the Cosmere is a connected, shared universe for his stories and that there are individuals and organisations within the Cosmere that can travel between worlds. These people and organisations are called Worldhoppers and a lot of them are widely unknown to us as readers.
So in today’s Cosmere 101 video, I’d like to briefly discuss the different Worldhoppers in Brandon Sanderson’s works and give some insight into these mysterious people and organisations...

    I read White Sand before I read most of Mistborn and Stormlight and I’m very glad I did. It was nice to know Khriss as a cute dorky scientist duchess before I knew of her as the cool Cosmere researcher most people first met her as. P.S.: I know White Sand has a reputation among some fans, but I really loved the Graphic Audio version of it! If you weren’t crazy about the comic, it’s definitely worth a listen!

    I suppose you covered it when you mention the 17th shard, but I think Demoux deserves a special mention since he's a semi-prominent solo character throughout Mistborn who then later joins the 17th shard for unknown reasons, more than likely with the help of Harmony since he's _most likely_ being fed atium in one form or another through this avenue.

    Yeah, this video ends up like a list of the organizations and individuals name, but without even a description of those and with most of their known goals obscured, I feel like this video is more frustrating than useful for new or seasoned readers. If TW.Raven wants to make another worldhopper guide in the future, may I suggest mentioning the list of stories where each given organization or character appears and a physical description as well. I also feel like you needn't be quite so squimish about spoilers either, since, for instance, knowing that the ghostbloods are worldhoppers is already a bit of a spoiler in itself, and generally the subject of worldhopper is inherently spoilery anyway, so I think it's fine to dwelve deeper, with the proper warnings at least.

  • @joshhoehne8281

    @joshhoehne8281

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@maximeteppe7627 - I don’t know about all that. While I can agree that it’s a bit light on information, wasn’t that the point of this video? Truly a non spoilery introduction to the subject. Just enough to help keep an eye out for these particular names without weakening the fun of piecing the puzzle together. But also yeah, I too would like to see a deeper dive with all of the who what when where and why’s that can be fit in. The Cosmere is a big place, and we’ve got time.

  • @maximeteppe7627

    @maximeteppe7627

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@joshhoehne8281 Of course, but I think that even as an introduction it falls short. I'd prefer a format where a character of faction is introduced, with identifying features described to help recognize them whenever we cross there paths. then the works where they appear as cameo could be listed. And finally the work where backgrounds and motives are most clearly explored is named. Even without spoilers it could be a better way to provide a guide to track down and understand world hoppers. As it stands the video ends up being a list of names, without providing much information about which books to find them in, and with mostly lacking or even deceiving information about their motives - and their planets of origin, which half the time don't appear in their respective novels, even less on their covers.

  • @joshhoehne8281

    @@maximeteppe7627 - Gotta admit, what you’re describing does sound rather nice. Especially the “identifying features to help recognize them whenever we cross (their) paths” bit. Just imagining the extra thrills I could have gotten the first time reading through the Cosmere and being able to pick out all of the Worldhoppers as we’re introduced to them, even without knowing all of their story at that point. I’m smiling now. Overall I see your points, and mostly agree. But I still think this video was fine for what I believe it was trying to be plus its short run time. I’d like to see the format expand in the direction of a short and simple primer like this one is, with a second “intermediate”, longer dive not long after. Like the next day or so. Possibly even film them both at the same time, then it’s “just” editing. Then if interest is high enough, a full on spoiler and theory filled episode.

    I don't think they're simply planets away. In the Cosmere and in Kriss notes it's mentioned it's much larger than our solar system, since each of these planets has their own planets, moons, and suns that aren't visible to other planets. That stands to reason they are _quite_ far apart though somewhere together in the same galaxy.
