The Corrosive Nature of Jealousy

Музыка

Howdy! Today I think it's time we have a talk about 'creator envy' which I think is one of the most toxic mindsets you can fall into as a creative.

As a disabled producer/composer, I have had my share of jealousy, looking at what others could do and I couldn't. That changed as my skills progressed, I discovered ways around things that were way beyond my physical capacity. I realized that I can do what I love my own way and that is the important part. Thank you for inspiring me to keep going and to expand my operation into sound design!

For nearly 5 decades now, I'm into Music, performing, writing, producing. I saw a lot of younger guys getting "there", being successful and famous and rich and adored, and yes, I felt my share of envy and jealousy. What kept me going, was that circle you describe so beautifully, and my love for it and my faith in it, and I learned, I have to decide, if I want to give in to the jealousy or live for what I love, and I chose the latter. And the jealousy got weaker. Along comes a KZreadr, 170+k subscribers, good-looking, perfect voice, unique ideas, and I listen to his wisdom, without jealousy but with curiosity and he makes me go out there and make what I love, with every video more awesome. Thank you.

As someone who played in bars for a living back in the 90s, it's odd to see how stressed everyone gets over this topic. From my perspective it's a damn miracle and priviledge of massive magnatude to be able to play music at all, let alone have all this amazing and affordable gear, and be able to post/publish any music and video you want at any time, without the approval of a record label and phsyical music store. Simply awesome. And if nobody listens... so what. The goal was to DO the whole music thing. All that lack of attention that people are upset about today was always there, even before the internet. The difference now is that you get a fighting chance to try, any time you want, as often as you want, for as long as you want. Success and adoration were never assured, and that fact it even more in front of us when we can publish to the whole human race.

I feel the same way. My success has been sharing my music with the world. Now we can record our own music any time we want. It's very convenient. I never worry about if anyone is going to listen to my work. I just keep creating more music compositions, because I love doing so. I always wanted my compositions to be different.

ok, boomer here. I think that was a very good and helpful video. I still have issues with this after being a music hobbyist and at times semi-pro for over 40 years. What strikes me is that for me I have over a hundred "friends" on FB and frankly I don't know who most of them are. I think most friended me so they could somehow promote their music. So there is now quantity over quality and a complete lack of emotional connection. When I started in the early 80s releasing music I did cassettes by mail order. Some people were really kind and reviewed my stuff and I got a few people (and I mean a few) ordering cassettes from me. One bought everything. I remember him, I remember his name, I remember what he said in letters to me about my music. He wasn't some "streamer 349, gender not specified, age not specified, location South Korea". I did some production (aka library music) which was used on a popular programme. That means probably millions of people have more or less accidently heard my music. I wasn't credited, so no one knows it was me and I don't know them. That's just weird. I think again though it's been the 2 or 3 people that told me how much my music meant to them is more important to me than the statistics. Pity it was my old stuff but you know, it doesn't really matter.

Another cost of ego is disappointment. I'm not jealous of those who get more streams than I do. I'm happy for them, because they probably put more work into it than I do to get those streams. However, when I first started putting music out to stream, I assumed that organically within the first 3 months, I would get around 200-300 streams between all of the services that I can be found on. Not enough to profit from, but certainly attainable. That didn't happen, of course. The numbers are a lot lower than I thought they'd be. I was quite bummed. But I also do realize that every stream I do get is one more than I would have gotten otherwise, and I'm quite proud of that. That is now how I look at it.

We went through a phase of playing a lot of gigs in Czechia. One of our fans was a guy in his 60s that was known by the Soviet authorities in his youth as a rock and roll rebel - he had his head forcibly shaved multiple times for having "decadent" long hair, he dealt illegal western records like drugs, and snuck across heavily guarded borders just to see his favourite band play. All this really made me appreciate the freedom to freely gather and make /enjoy any art or music we liked, and helped make the eternal battle with jealousy over stats a little easier.

"Lest anyone protest that the state's true 'function' or 'duty' or 'end' is, as Locke, Madison, and countless others have argued, to protect individuals' rights to life, liberty, and property, the evidence of history clearly shows that, as a rule, real states do not behave accordingly. The idea that states actually function along such lines or that they strive to carry out such a duty or to achieve such an end resides in the realm of wishful thinking. Although some states in their own self-interest may at some times protect some residents of their territories (other than the state's own functionaries), such protection is at best highly unreliable and all too often nothing but a solemn farce. Moreover, it is invariably mixed with crimes against the very people the state purports to protect, because the state cannot even exist without committing the crimes of extortion and robbery, which states call taxation (Nock 1939), and as a rule, this existential state crime is but the merest beginning of its assaults on the lives, liberties, and property of its resident population." ~ Robert Higgs, 'If Men Were Angels: The Basic Analytics of the State versus Self-government'

I relate to this so much. Once I started getting the millions of views and the bigger subscription numbers, the more I realized they really didn't feel like anything after a while. Since it was what I had been striving toward for a long time, it ended up flipping the carpet under my feet, making me run to seclusion from the audience and figure out why am I really even doing this in the first place. I had to reconnect back to those times when I was still super new and did it for fun, just to express what I liked to hear myself. Once the ego of fame is crushed there's really nowhere else to go at that point, without imploding.

Exactly! Perception is reality and the sooner someone recognizes they can control their reality thru how they perceive themselves and others the better they will be. Having said that, I understand it's hard to shed the years of brainwashing that society as a whole has placed on the human psyche, but it can be undone. We can choose to be mad if someone cuts us off in traffic or we can choose to reframe it and say maybe their child is in the hospital and they are trying to reach them. We can choose to be jealous of someone else's success, or we can choose to give praise for their success. Choose to live your life on your terms. Be you. Do you!

This topic is so deep, I think it is something that social medias impact on in several fileds. Nevertheless, it is reallu great to have content about it. It helps me a lot as I am right now in a middle of a crisis: "why the f*** am I making music?". We can sometimes lose total perspective on our craft and art when going on the social medias jungle, and for me, every time I go on these, evrytime I feel like a piec of sh*t! As pretty much anyone will read this comment, I still wish everyone's the best while creating!

  • @pianoatthirty

This topic runs deeper and has a much simpler solution - it all boils down to the unconscious desire so many human beings have for a "pat on the back" (whether it be in the form of praise or money). When you let go of this, you internally become so totally free that you start learning and creating without all those useless judgments/thoughts.

This is brilliant. I found myself getting into photography, I created shots that I liked and felt happy with, then others liked them too. I started getting published and getting some good gigs. It was a hobby at first. But…. The ‘competition’ started (mainly from within myself) with other photographers and clients etc. It completely ruined the whole thing i was doing. So I just stopped, and for 3 years never quite understood what happened, I could never articulate to anyone that asked, especially weird as I see my photos in many of my friends houses. So be careful of going down this trap, it can kill what you love without you even knowing what is going on!!

I'm new to the music industry and since experiencing mild success I have been so experiencing so many of the negative topics you talk about. All these videos have been helping me so much find a healthier and happier mindset.

Epically said and so true, I've been in this place many times doing my music production journey, and sometimes you just have to do it for the Love of the game. That's when you find true inner peace, thank you for the great video! 👍

My way of dealing with those feelings is to get my sense of accomplishment from my main career - software development - and not from my hobby - music production. That removes all the stress from it all.

This is your best video yet. Truly impressive. The amount of works you put on the visuals, to illustrate your points, was top notch. And the subject matter? A foundation principle to anyone who makes art, at any level.

Man your videos always hit the nail on the head! I used to compare myself to others constantly but what really helped me was when my therapist told me to compare myself to myself instead of comparing myself to other people. I always had this feeling like I was going nowhere and I was not improving but actually, when you listen to your stuff in the context of your own work, or in this case your own "circle" then I noticed that I appreciate I work alot more, especially when I compared my current tracks to the tracks I made like 5 years ago. I think it's also worth noting that there isn't a set time frame in terms of when things "take off" I used to feel as if I was doing something wrong when producers who were getting more attention and blowing up with only 3 years of producing. Never view stuff like this as a competition because it will really damage your mental health in the long run. As long as your having fun that's all that matters!

I used to struggle with this. Then I realized the only person I needed to compare myself to or be jealous of was myself. I’ve been producing since 2005 and I put a lot of time and effort into my music and its finally paying off. I’m much happier now that im not being jealous or comparing myself to others.

Great video. I like the fact that you deal with the mental side of making music; not just the practical side. As a one man bedroom producer; I find your material helps me to keep going. Still the main thing for me personally is to enjoy my sessions regardless of if anything should come of my labour. The minute it becomes a chor; than it's time to give up. Thanks man!

I've accepted that very fev likes my music, I'm old and don't care as much anymore. But I feel for others so sometimes I just spend little time listen to what others have done on different forums and put a heart comment that I know means alot to many, and I enjoy it :) Thanks for another great video! I struggle with this concept constantly. Obviously I believe in the importance of creating art that is distinctly my own, but I also recognize the importance of genre and giving my listener some road map of the expectations they should have for the music I create. This is, for me, the current struggle.

My feeling is to tell you to stop carrying this load and put it down. You can not write down to the market place and produce your music to suit a genre and others. No point. Make your music and be glad you have the gift to do this. There is so much music out there its simply not worth worrying about listeners at all...just thank your lucky stars someone can be bothered to check you out.

This video came out on my birthday! HowdyDoodie. Great video. Disappointment only happens when the outcome is lesser than your expectation. So you either have to go in expecting nothing out of something but still do your best, or you can go in with high expectations, but be really good at being grateful for all that you come out with. Learning to fail is probably the best way to do this. I guess this is a Hope versus expectation thing. If you expect something, you may end up bitterly disappointed. But you can hope for something without expecting it, and be grateful for anything you receive in the experience. Well, that was a ramble.... Great content BTW!

I feel like I will be a "success" when my audience starts to spend as much time listening to my music as I spend making it. I may never be "successful" by that metric, but I try to remind myself that the art I create is itself, the only reward that I am entitled to. Thanks for another great video.

This really resonated with me. For a long time I felt I had to be at a certain skill level to make videos and share my music, I kept feeling inferior to all the talented people that do their music channels, release their music, play their gigs and so on. Jealosy and self depreciation are very human and very strong forces that really can hamper you in your journey. It was a bit of a stone around my neck until I realised that I have to find MY voice and MY path and it will give me purpose and meaning if I do what I enjoy. So I started making videos and sharing my music and ideas from the perspective of sharing my own journey, not trying to be someone else or try to make myself seem a better producer or musician than I am but openly and honestly document my journey of discovery of different tools, music genres and my own creativity. Share without thinking too much about reach, likes or subs or whatever. I just enjoy figuring out how to improve producing music and making videos and sharing the experience to whoever wants to listen and that pure feeling of joy and creative energy when I manage to finish a new song or video while focusing on the experience, not whatever quality criteria I put on myself because I keep comparing myself to others, really makes it a truly meaningful experience. What you say in this video is so true and so IMPORTANT, thank you so much for putting this out there. Sorry for the wall of text, but I had to share. Keep up the good work! 😀
