Wow...I did not realie this was a real...song. A (mumble-mumble) long time ago, I was in a platoon of Marines and we used to do road march, and sing cadences to keeo the time. Sgt MacDonald had this tune - but his words were like - "Enlist, young Marine, and come along with me/we're off to sail the oceans, and all the seven seas, bright-eyed laddie, and come along with me" - with a bunch of lines about the Pacific, Viet Nam, Lebenon, etc.

I can top that! LOL In circa 1983 while a young soldier on leave, I was telling my dad a dirty joke about the US Army Rangers having a midnight naked inspection, and when I was only halfway through, he began telling the EXACT SAME damned joke the way HE had heard it during World War II when it was about British Commandos! I wonder if it's still making the rounds even now, but applied to Navy SEALS or Delta Force or the SAS.

There is a Canadian version of this which was sung about the Blue Puttees, the famous regiment of Newfoundlanders that was raised for WWI. A very poigniant song about the courage and the pathos of that great generation and of the terrible toll their slaughter took on the people of the rock.

You probably have no Idea how many hours go in to making songs even the modern ones like Kygo's "it ain't me" it's not because they use computers that music is not music, if you think about it, some modern music is way more complicated then this, This I pull out the guitar chords and I can instantly play along, the song I named above, you need to learn the different parts changing rhythms etc. If it is you in your videos on your channel, then you are a shame to musicians all over the world, for even daring to say that. Yes some songs are written quick to get money fast, the best example is some American country artist of today, but dont take the merit out of people because you think you are more noble then them for improvising on a guitar, I mean who ever it is on your channel is obviously full of himself, you truly disgust me

Man modern music is shit, just learn musical theories, you will find out a million of possibilities for creating a song, whereas modern music only use 3-4 accords, it maybe take some hours to create but there is no interest into that, poor, commercial bullshit. There is no musical interest into this.

Pure Malt did a fine rendition of this song at the Clachaig. It was dedicated to the boys of 5 Plt (Close combat platoon) 3 Scots Black Watch on operation in Afghanistan There were hill walking types from all over the world, A lot of lumps in throats I'm afraid...The boys are still going "over the mountain & over the bay" They've never let us down however grime their task.

This song makes me very proud that I got a chance to serve in the blackwatch with just the hackle in my tos and no tin. I was in during the change from regiment to battalion and although it is great for the lads making moving for a different role easier, it's still a shame for the history and lost titles

All I'd like to chime in and say is I don't think the song's really praising anyone in particular. Of course, you could sing it to celebrate the Black Watch but you'd be missing the point, I think. At the time it was wrote it was more likely a piece of parody than anything else. The devil is in the detail here. How the sergeants say "you don't know how much danger you're in" in regards to farming work and yet they're sergeants for the Blackwatch, a unit that saw intense fighting in all of Great Britian's wars during that time. The intention is for one to scoff at the suggestion that enlisting would be any safer than farming work. The hyperbole regarding "two rattles of the drum and that will pay it all" is also important here. The point being that yes, the Blackwatch gave decent pay but there's also an underlying question of whether that's really worth it considering you'd be in direct line of fire. Which I think is why the drummer was chosen for this stanza in specific, since they were some of the first in terms of the charge. And of course the important detail that *only* forty two have enlisted, suggesting that they might have reason to not do so, that they are skeptical of whether it'd be better to enlist with the Blackwatch rather than live a farmer's life with their family. So to me the song seems like a biting criticism during its time, questioning the motive of young men heading off to war for greater pay when they'd be dying to achieve little for their people back home, who would still be under the raw deal that the landlords and high peasants gave them all the same. Or maybe it isn't and that's just how I read it in the social context of the time it was written. Who knows. I think if it *were* written with that all in mind that it'd probably be just as relevant today as of then, where in my country (US) folks enlist for the sake of getting through college for free even though all they're doing is fighting wars that go nowhere at best (like Afghanistan over the last year where a steady amount of deploy troops die every month and the US and Afghan Security forces keep losing ground regardless). And at worse.. Well, that's a bit too unpleasant to talk about. Let's just say the US Army and Airforce haven't learned anything about preventing human rights violations since Vietnam & Korea.

@@ComradeGrimmGames 42 is the regiments foot number not the number of people to join, another nickname for the black watch was the fourty twa. Life back then was pretty shit.. full stop wether you decided to be a farmer on the lairds land or join any part of the military. If you think history sided with those that picked the farming option, I would suggest looking into the highland clearances... not many winners in those days except the wealthy and powerful so in that sence I suppose it does draw some parallels with today.

Hello Sean. My uncle recorded this from a TV programme in 1987. Most of the songs on the programme are also on my channel, if you scroll through you'll see them, posted individually. (Although because it was recorded on an old VHS tape some of them the quality deteriorated and couldn't be loaded) I believe the programme can also be purchased from the COrries site, DVD has some songs not on the TV programme: www.corries.com/product_info.php?cPath=42&products_id=366 Hope this helps.
