The one part of this video that is incorrect is in the kiom/tiom/iom section. You never say "da la." It's either "kiom da something" or "Kiom de la something." Kiom vi trinkis? Mi trinkis iom da akvo. How much did you drink? I drank some water. Tio estas ĉiom de la filmo. That is all of the film. I have to wonder why Esperanto has "da" as well as "de". Has any explanation been given for this? I also find it strange to translate "How much ___" or "How many ___" with "kiom da" rather than just "kiom". In other words why can't the quantity be a sufficient word in itself, as it is in English, without needing a preposition.

We actually used to have "tho" and "thy" in English to correlate with "who" and "why." They were used in Early Middle English (although both "thy" and "why" were usually preceded by "for" like "forwhy.") This pattern holding is also why "wherefore" means "why." It correlated with "therefore."

When I took the Pacujo course online, this was the hardest section for me by far; I spent about a month constantly forgetting and trying to re-memorize these puzzle pieces, and for some reason I just couldn't get it. I ended up having to memorize each individual combination one by one (to give my brain a one-to-one correspondence), and that took me several more months. Back then, I would have killed to see this video. You make this so engaging and sensible that I find myself wishing I was a komencanto again just so I could learn from your videos.

Thank you for teaching. You are a such a true member of the Esperanto community. I wish to be fluent and part of the community one day.

Two things. First, for two days I've watched dozens of Esperanto videos. I just stumbled upon this video and got more from it than all the others combined. Thank you. Second, is it just me, or is there something about you, not always, but from time to time, that is sorta Matt Damoneyish (that's a good thing)? I don't know, but either way great informative video and well presented - kudos!

According to Being Colloquial in Esperanto by David K. Jordan... "Because the ordinal (la sepa, la oka) is used to refer to the hour of the day, asking the time requires using kioma, since that is the question-word that demands an ordinal number in response." - Page 46 "Kioma, made of the correlative kiom plus the adjective suffix -a, would correspond to the English "whichth," except that there is no English 'whichth.'" - Page 55 To clarify, consider these examples: Kioma tago estas hodiaŭ? La 12a. Kiu tago estas hodiaŭ? Vendredo. Kioma horo estas? La 3a.

I had to try hard to get anywhere near rolling my R's. The little ability I have, I acquired by listening to the Jen Nia Mondo tapes--(yes, tapes!) with headphones. Overall, it's more important that you don't omit them (pahk the cah). Always enjoy the presentation of your videos, Alex. Mi certas ke vi helpas multajn lernantojn.

I'm not sure I've heard anywhere that R's must be rolled in Esperanto: in fact, even though I can, I never do. :-) I myself find no problem with the way Alex pronounces his R's (or anything else, really) in Esperanto.

The most common is tapped or trilled. The English R is unique to English and only exists in some of the English dialects so it's a lot less common. I wouldn't recommend using that R if you can tap it but if you can't then you do what you can.

I do agree that the Esperanto "R" is different from the English "R" -- but the English "R" is barely an "R", really! ;-) In any case, there is a chasm between an English "R" and a trilled "R": like you say, just tapping it is enough. :-)

English has been said to have a "whatever rhotic," but Esperanto does more so. Technically, since it's supposed to be easy to learn and speak, any rhotic sound is considered acceptable for the Esperanto R.
