This helped SO much! I was trying to struggle through just 2 words in the Complete Esperanto book sciencisto and kuracisto. You have explained this WAY better. Your right, the way the y explain it in books is kinda confusing and I had an inkling that I was still not saying words like this, right. this has totally cleared that up! Thanks!

Esperanto Variety Show I think that is a great idea. I want to start listening to the language more, and the subtitles are the early crutch I need to advance in speaking and understanding. I am sure they would help lots of learners.

@@charelW - When there are subtitles - it's best to listen once without the and then the second time with ESPERANTO subtitles. Then, only after a few passes like that, try with English - then go back to Esperanto subtitles or no subtitles (all on the same video). If you go right to the English subtitles, it's not just a crutch. You're fooling brain and not really learning.

I like the advice of moving the S to the previous syllable. What I would think of suggesting as another alternative is to practice saying CSCSCS (which sounds just like CCC) with moving the tip of the tongue only as little as necessary to break the flow of air and then just starting at the S instead of the C. What do you think?

I'm of the opinion that S and C have different tonal qualities and that the break in airflow is not a key element of the sound - even though it often occurs with C.

I've got a few thoughts. First, check out the other videos on my channel. Many have subtitles in both English and Esperanto. The book Gerda Malaperis has been made into a movie and as I understand it, the dialog was copied verbatim from the book. I'm currently working with someone to translate some original short stories into Esperanto to be read out loud and used as you described. (Subscribe to my channel for updates.)

@@jguillermooliver - I have a lot of good ideas -- more ideas than time, really. A lot of good ideas fall by the wayside. If there's something you see that I haven't done yet that you'd like to see - remind me of the details and we'll see what we can do. Looking over this thread, what springs to mind is that I did some translations for Myrtis Smith, which she published in two affordable e-books on Amazon. Both include English translations and are intended for new speakers. One of the volumes include translations by another person - a competent speaker whom I know personally - but I was not involved in proofreading or approving those translations. I stand by my own translations (which were proofread by other speakers before publication) and I would happily endorse either ebook.

En diversaj slavaj lingvoj, "pomo", skribita simile al "jablko", estas prononcata "japko" au "jabuko". En Prago, mi demandis kelneron, kiel li prononcas "jablko". Li simple respondis "jablko". Well, at least I'm not the only one with this problem.

Saltuon Tomaso, I think "sc" is hard for English speakers because that combination doesn't naturally occur in English. Or so I thought until one day when it occurred to me that you can approximate "ne scias" pretty well by saying "nest see us" quiockly enough that the words run together. OK, the schwa sound most people use in "us" isn't the proper "a" you would use in "scias," but that's a minor point and not what we're working on. From there you can just drop the "ne" and you've got "scias" right where you want it. Is that a good way of thinking of it? Or am I leading myself (and potentially others) into bad habits this way?

"Nest see us" needs to be purged from our repertoire. It's because of false explanations like that that I made this video. It all starts with pronouncing C correctly. Everything else follows from there. "Nest see us" doesn't teach how to pronounce C correctly. I will die on this hill. It's not you. "Nest see us" is a major pet peeve and thorn in my side.

I meant it to be more like "nestseeus" but I'm not going to pound that pain point. I *think* I'm pronouncing 'c' correctly, but you'll be able to judge as soon as NASK kicks off and I open my virtual mouth. Tiam ni ambaŭ scios ke me ne scias kion mi ne scias. :)

I checked several dictionaries and I cannot find what "scioptero" is supposed to mean. Also dictionaries do not seem to agree on the meaning of "scirpo". Is it syrup or bulrush. I would like to know where he gets these words from.

It's actually "sciuroptero". I realized the mistake very shortly after recording the video. I may have mentioned it somewhere - but you're the first person to call me on it. :-) Where do you see "scirpo" listed a syrup? I'd be inclined not to use that dictionary any more. It's bulrush.

Yes, that's the sound. Somehow German students manage to learn that sounds without saying "tuh-seit". (I actually completed a minor in German before starting with Esperanto.)

skio estas ilo por glite iri malsupren sur neĝkovrita deklivo. Estas tute normale en klasika Latino diri "skiuro" kaj skientia (?), sed Zamenhof kredeble volis eviti homonimojn. Aú li preferis vorton skribe simila al la angla kaj franca vortoj "science"

Ofte en Eo, estas sonoj tre similaj pro abundo da "so-sonoj" fonetike proksimaj: ŝ, c, s, z . Ekzemple : eco, edzo sekso, sedco kaj multaj aliaj .

Mia gepatra lingvo estas la hungara. En ĉi tiu lingvo la prononco de SC tute ne estas problemo. Dirus simile ankaŭ serbo, kroato, sloveno, polo, slovako, ĉeĥo, ktp. Interese ke iuj diras ke Esperanto estas malfacila por hungaroj. Boh!..Zamenhof sciis pri la prononco pli ol multaj profesiaj lingvistoj. La prononc-diferencoj estas tiel variaj en la mondo ke neniu profesia lingvisto povus kontentigi ĉiujn. Mi kunsentas kun vi, ke se Zamenhof estus usonano, Esperanto estus malsama. Ankaŭ mi havis preskaŭ nesupereblajn prononc-problemojn, sed tute ne koncerne Esperanton, sed koncerne la anglan lingvon. Sekve, la malfacileco estas reciproka. Esperanto estas pli proksima al mia kutima prononc-maniero kaj malproksima de via prononcmaniero. Bedaŭrinde, en la tempo de Zamenhof, la angla havis malmultan influon ĉar tiutempe la "internacia lingvo" estis la franca.

For English speakers - as you may have noticed in the video, I resisted saying that SC is pronounced like STS. I even said that it is NOT pronounced like STS. I did this for a few reasons. Chief reason is that not all "STS" combinations are created equal. I've heard that it's also found in "laSTStep" and "can the bird in the neSTSee us?" I did not consider "exists", but I did consider "fists". It's not a bad way to stick up for Esperanto and show that English has consonant clusters too (how about the killer "eigh-t-th-s"?) - but due to the fact that I've seen "STS" go wrong for so many people, I decided not to include it in my explanation.

Rusoj povas diri "c", sed ili devas lerni latinajn vortojn.

I heard some esperantists say cisas But that scares me because it hurts my Brain knowing that the c in scias will become the letters in knight k,gh know k

Well, as it turns out, it IS America where I live -- but not where everybody else lives.

What a shame that Esperanto has such difficult words as "scias" and "sceno." Why can't it be simpler, like English, for example: I "I look at the paper and see that the sixth physicists' statistics sticks out"? (sarcasm) Esperanto estas ja pli facila.

I noticed the sarcasm before I saw the blatant sarcasm tag, but you're right. "More like English" is only easier for people who already speak English.

Simpligu Esperanton: T kaj S solvas la problemon. Fonetike, al mi, estas du konsonantaj literoj, tamen estus stranga se la vortoj estis skribitaj: "stsias"; stsientso"; ktp.

Sed la tuta celo de la filmo estas montri ke gxi ne estas "sts". Oni ne parolas tiel.

they sound the same.... let's just get rid of letter c.
