The COOLEST DESTINATION in THAILAND - The Essential Guide - Wat Phu Tok

I first visited the spectacular Wat Phu Tok in Bueng Kan Province, Thailand back in 1991 and have visited it more than 30 times. In this video I show you how to get the most from your own visit to Wat Phu Tok.
Join me on a visit to the place that adds a new dimension to the meaning of coolest destination in Thailand. This place is the gem of North East Thailand yet so many people still don't know about it.
With dramatic video and drone footage I show you Wat Phu Tok from every vantage point. I also go into it's history and the story of it's revered creator, a Buddhist monk and teacher because above all Wat Phu Tok is an active monastery.
I also tell you the story of my first visit to Wat Phu Tok and show you some pictures I took on that visit.
Fuel my creativity, Buy Me a Coffee and and help keep the ideas brewing!

looks like your familiarity with the spot serves your cinematography skills well. it got to the point of dramatic with the drone footage, i even felt a shortness of breath seeing what was required to ascend to the 6th level. with each step i envisioned what earlier visitors experienced BEFORE the stairs were built. one slippery slope, indeed. oh, and the final 5 minutes, it was so quiet! masterfully done, karl.

Thanks Donald, indeed. What would it have been like just after it was constructed? In all honesty the upper levels are almost identical to what they were like in my first visit in 1991 although the ground floor complex is a lot more developed now. I hope it never loses it's character in the name of 'safety'. Cheers.

Did the same walk as Karl to the 7th level viewpoint but instead of returning down the same steps we went up, we freestyled 😂 down a path on the other side to the 6th level then descended the exact same way we ascended. Incredible video karl. I will definately take my family here, mother in law has been and said its amazing. Out of interest how many hours would you set aside to do a full 1 to 6 and half of level 7 circumnavigation that you did for this video?

  • @karlsthailand

I think that 3 hours at the Temple would be enough to see most of it. I made this video because it can be pretty hard to navigate. The route I take in the video IMO is a great way to see most of it (Highlights if you like). The video would have been just too long if I had shown it all. Take plenty to drink up with you. Cheers

As a frequent traveler to Thailand (since the late 1990s, probably about 75 trips so far) I'm all in for your great videos. Both historical and recent. Your channel and the ones of Bangkok Pat and CB Media are the real s*it. Thank you!

Yes, not everybody takes to Wat Phu Tok lol. I've always loved the place. I'll check out that cafe vlog later. I was back in Nong Khai briefly last month (1 night) but never went there. Cheers

It was just hard work by the locals. I did find a short video interview in Thai by one of the guys who helped build it but it wasn't very revealing and I've never seen any pictures of it's construction. I'll enquire next time I visit. Cheers

Can't get enough of this. These structures, although much smaller in size, remind me of the mighty tepui in South America (Venezuela/Brazil/Guyana) Those plateau can only be reached by rock climbing if my memory serves me well In the distance you can spot another, similar plateau mountain, around the 18' mark What also struck me is that the vegetation around Wat Phu Tok was a lot less lush back then ('91) than it is now, or am I wrong? I wouldn't recommend drinking alcohol at level 7 either, but for other reasons than the Nagas ;o)

Those Tepuis are on another scale altogether although the shape of the rock is similar so I can see the comparison. Glad that you enjoyed the video and location. Cheers

for the scenes up to and including the monkey I used a DJI Osmo Action 3, for all the scenes except for the drone shots after that I used my Iphone 14 Pro. I also edited all the video on my Iphone. Have a great trip, you can't beat your first visit somewhere new.

What month was that when you were there in this video? I wonder if June is a "bad" month to go (in case it's too rainy).

I would say that no month is a bad month. I’ve been up there in the rain before and actually quite enjoyed the atmosphere. Perhaps the 7th level might be a bit dodgy but I found the wooden stairways to be fine. Please do check on Thai Bank holidays before you go though. I know it definitely closes during the Songkran holiday in April. Cheers
