The concept of nationalism terminates social status when it comes to be adopted: Romilla Thapar

During the Dr. C.D. Deshmukh Memorial Lecture 2023, distinguished historian Prof. Romila Thapar said nationalism terminated the old social status and social system and re-established a society of values and structures that almost revolutionised the world.

To begin with, she has written" Early India " without the Knowledge of Sanskrit. She learnt Indian History in English in England and then she wrote our history text books.( Funny as it may sounds but Its like a British in England reading history on England in Hindi written by someone who learned English History in India that too in Indian language ) . Her take on Ashoka were really should be read as bedtime story, cause Nehru and congress needed Ashoka as a hero and a national symbol ( Ashoka Stambh ect ). But the fear of a possibility that Ashoka can be a "Hindu hero " or Hindu nationalist's pride , Congress and Romila thapar had to make Ashoka a savage "Hindu King" who realised after the Kalinga war how he killed so many innocent people and then converts to Buddhism. Ashoka in fact was Buddhist the time Kalinga war happened and No Buddhist text links his conversion to the war and even Ashoka's eulogists like Charles Allen agree that his conversion predated the Kalinga war. The political agenda to fight "Hindu Nationalism " which congress has been fear mongering for last 75 year has crept in a lot of biases towards Indian historical figures. Ask her why we she doesn't have the same passion for Shivali Maharajji , Maharana Pratap, Vijaynagara Kindom , Chola Kingdom ect Well because they were all hindus fightig from the invaders. Whats her take on Islamic conversion ? , Jizia tax ect well that needed to be secularised and thats why the rough edges were softened out. If congress really wanted a role model then Dara Shikoh should have been the hero for all Indian Muslims and not Aurangzeb. In our history books there is no reference to Ramayana or Mahabharata, not from a religious point of view but historical point of view ? Arent West invested in researching the Bible from a cultural and historical point of view. The demonization of Hindu culture sadly is reflected upon todays Indian society and politics and the divide is clear. In indonesia ( Bali ) the muslims do visit the temples as a part of understanding the culture. I saw kids from Jkarta visiting Bali temples why ? Hindu hatred in the Subcontinent is credited by the Politics of the sub continent.

But even as an admirer, Initially I used feel awed by the language, flow, and the background research that one comes across in her writings However as a man of science, I dont just let grandeur and vocabulary mask my understanding. If I am doubt I just read again to appreciate the logic and rationale behind many of her arguments. How I always used to feel a a shallowness in her arguments. Just too many interpretations over a few carefully selected and dressed up historical references. However after I heard her rants against the people who criticize her works in interviews given only to select TV channels, I was convinced that this woman had a deep disdain for the Hindus and nurtured a lifelong bitterness .

And the way they defended the Islamic Invaders and Glorified them, whereas completely eliminating and sidelining the Indegenous struggles and resistance against them. The foundational Islamic Doctrine of Breaking the Idols, was eclipsed by their Marxist Economic interpretations where there were many major examples of proving it to be completely opposite, one being the very records of the Courtiers of these very Invaders. Elliot Dawson's done a better job of translation of the works as is. They didn't even mentioned some of the major figures they even I recently came to know from the Vikram Sampath's Bravehearts of Bharat. @@kunalsarkar1984 The voices of seculars in India and Muslims who cry foul at everything is amplified by our left-leaning media and the media of the western world. For them secularism and liberalism is the lifeline, without which their countries will be in ruins. They've to keep their arms open for everyone so that people emigrate to their countries to do their work. It serves a greater purpose for them. But why do Indian left and Hindus especially blow the trumpet on behalf of Muslims, knowing well what they've done to the Indian society and to Hindus specifically is just mind blowing.

She goes on and on about trained historians vs untrained ones. I am guessing she is putting herself in the trained historians category and anybody who opposes her view as untrained historians. In her lecture on democracy and a warning of majority overpowering the minority agenda, she did not talk about fundamental rights that constitution grants to protect every citizen which cannot be taken away by majority and how judiciary is the watchman. She forgets that majority is most likely to run executive just by the fact that they are more in number. This is what happens when historians don't get passing grade on elementary mathematics.

As a layman without any training in critical study of history, I was curious to know whether there is any difference between a Hindu king looting temple wealth and a Muslim invader say like Ghazni or Ghori looting and destroying a Hibdu temple?. The first instance of e can notice in Islamic history is by their Prophet Mohammed ,who destroyed the idols in Ka'aba. Is it not, therefore ,that the Muslim invaders were just imitating their Prophet as a religious duty, though these barbarians may have been used by temple wealth. At the end when Prof. Thapar concluded that during their interaction over a thousand years, there must have been restless periods , I hoped she would elaborate on the subject. But she kept the controversial points at end quite understandably. It would have been quite eightening to know from her about the otherwise of the story. Objectivity demands at least from trained historians lof her eminence that a holistic picture is submitted by them. Yet hearing her views is quite refreshing and educative. Yes, Everything must be questioned .

Prof Romila Thapar's approach towards studying History (especially Epics) is really appreciable......the way she has transformed History (from Indology to Social Science) is commendable.....most importantly she has taught us how to differentiate between Mythology and History, and use Mythology to understand past societies......her work shows how Mahabharata and Ramayana were composed from oral traditions and later on converted into Bhagvata texts (Bhriguisation) by Orthodox Brahmins to combat heterodox philosophies (like Buddhism, Jainism)....the epics, mainly Bhagvad Gita, were also used to justify caste system as social ethic and reinforce Kingship.....

Too much Nationalism in Europe had lead to wars and too much regionalism in India leads to separatism as India is a diverse country so in a diverse country like India nationalism is very much needed to maintain the unity . But why think when you can just copy and quote the western historians.
