I think I read that this village actually has an unusual amount of twins born, and that's why the village decided that they were to be sacrificed. This was their 'destiny' its what they're 'born for'

Apparently being near the hellish abyss would sometimes cause one soul about to be born in that valley to split into two, becoming twins (normal twins are two separate souls). That's why the Crimson Sacrifice would even work, they were SUPPOSED to be one person and through the ritual it would cause their one soul to partially re-fuse, leaving one half of the soul alive as the living twin to serve as an anchor in the living world for the other half of the soul which dwelled as a crimson butterfly in the spirit world. They are basically a suture stitching the abyss closed for as long as the surviving twin is alive. Once they die they also become a crimson butterfly protecting the village. Itsuki and Mitsuki's ritual failed because it required one twin to WANT to die and become one again and one that wanted to live with their twin so they could serve their roles as the suture. Mitsuki and Itsuki, however, both wanted to live and so Mitsuki's soul didn't complete the stitch.

There is a genetic component on the incidence of twins a community can have a higher than usual incidence

I played this game in Japanese. The way the story unravels is beautiful. It's also sad that many key aspects are lost in translation. From the very beginning Mio refers to Mayu as Big Sis (onee-chan /お姉ちゃん), so when you read those diaries and files about the Ritual and find out that the older twin must kill the youngest, you are led to believe that Mayu will end up killing Mio. Not only that, but the way Mayu keeps insisting in performing the ritual and the way Sae keeps haunting and harassing Mio, makes you believe that she's eager to kill the sister you play as, it's not until the later half of the game where you find that piece of information revealing that it is actually the second twin to be born the one considered to be oldest, more mature and stronger. This idea of Mayu killing Mio is reinforced by the way some ghosts attack. Some of them try to reach out for Mio's neck to strangle her. The only way to know which sister is the oldest in the American and European versions is by reading the game manual. In the original Japanese version, the first piece of dialogue spoken is that single word ONEE-CHAN. Also, the name Mayu (繭) means "cocoon", foreshadowing Mayu's wish of becoming a butterfly.

The fatal frame series: where eternal trauma, suffering and guilt is the happy ending.

The first time I played this game that ending caught me by surprise so hard I ended up crying, lmao. Still loved the game a lot, but it was frustrating cause everything felt like it was for nothing tbh... On my lastest replay I wondered if maybe Mayu wasn't the only one being possessed/controlled, maybe Mio also had something latched onto her at the start of everything (I mean when she saw a mourning Yae at the entrance of the Village) What if Yae was willing to finally finish what she "should" have done back then, that might explain why everyone confuses Mio with Yae and how mindlessly willingly she ended up strangling Mayu at the end. I know this is the one canon ending, but if you think about the "Promise" ending, the only good one, Yae comes out of Mio's body and comes back to Sae. I don't know.

I'd love to see a video on Fatal Frame 3 as well. Personally, I think 3 had the most interesting story and location. Love the idea of a haunted mansion that only exists in dreams, where those in a coma are trapped in. It just gives so much Nightmare on Elm Street vibes.

I always wondered, Itsuki knew the village needed a Kusabi.... and then he asked his friend to come? I'm wondering what he thought would happen? Maybe he just didn't think out of grief and worry?

It's explained in the diaries: his friend Ryozo Munakata decided to come by himself, Itsuki never asked him to come to the actual village, only to come meet Yae and Sae after they escaped from there. But Ryozo became worried for Itsuki after his last letters and persuaded his teacher to come with him to the village, where Ryozo tried to look for Itsuki. Itsuki was surprised when he found out his friend was at the village, and knew that the villagers would use him for Kusabi, which is why he wanted to tell his friend to leave quickly and asked Chitose to deliver Ryozo a key to Itsuki's room (which she never did). Hope this helped clarify things👍

I never liked the canon ending. I never really understood how, if the ritual failed, the whole world didn't end up like the village? What were they really doing this for, to not have to leave? Spoilers for the video because I was warned not to when I started to comment. Something about giving these jerks what they want doesn't sit right with me, but I also understand that's what makes it so horrifying. For Mayu to have no control over her own actions, and for Mio to try to desperately to save her. I always thought the first game was scarier, but I do love this one too.

I actually thought the canon ending was both of them surviving but Mio got blinded when she accidentally stated at the Abyss while pulling Mayu out of it.

It is a shame you don't get to fight Sae as the fonal boss in your first playthrough and have to wait until the second and nightmare difficulty. I imagine most people dont even get to do it and just fight the Kusabi.

What I REALLY love about your way of story telling is how you combine the information given with the tone of telling a really enrapturing ghost story. Yeah, the game's plot and lore is tragic, but the way you tell it makes the listeners/viewers/players/fans feel like this is the first time hearing about it and they want more!

I'm glad to see another person who recognizes Mio's ability. I know PTSD and grief are a thing, but I can't accept that Mio, a girl of such extraordinary resilience and resourcefulness canonically was overcome by despair by this ordeal. She deserved better.

This is my favorite horror game of all time!!!!!! Been begging for a hd remaster for almost 20 years

I hate this ending, and it's made worse because it's the canon ending (as plainly seen in FF3). I was enraged with it back in the day and only the "good" non canon ending gave me some peace. Living in darkness but with a satisfied smile on my face after getting my little sister back safe and sound? That's a no brainer trade.

I totally agree! Plus what upsets me the most about the canon ending is that in the end Sae got what she wanted AND neither of the sisters did any of this on their own free will. Sae basically possesed Mayu the entire time and Mio was roped into it by Sae's sister too. One thing is sacrificing yourself wanting to save the souls, another is just doing it for selfish reasons (Sae) and just manipulating two innocent girls into it. At least FF3s good ending (where everyone survived) shows Mio introduced by her uncle to the others and clearly starting to recover from all of this.

By games 4 and 5 you’ll be tearing your hair out over how many camera obscura would be credited to the same guy

I watched both parts, strangely in reverse order because I missed part 1 on release. I watch several really good gaming retrospectives and lore channels. I love how you perform your voiceovers, setting the mood but never afraid to slip in a little comedy to keep us on our toes. The only videos I have watched are your Fatal Frame videos but I was so impressed I subscribed. These are some of my favourite games of that era, but I also watch videos of games I haven't played so I will catch more of your videos later.

I hope you are planning Fatal Frame 3, Fatal Frame 4 and Fatal Frame 5 essays. Especially since Fatal Frame 5 and Fatal Frame 4 were recently released on Steam.

9:22 to 9:30 is my favorite part of the game. it really etched in to my head up to this day

I was waiting for the plottwist that Mayu was dead all along, that she had die when she had that accident as kids and that Mio couldn't proses that she was the one that kill her and lie to herself that she was still alive, and that all this long it was the ghost of Sae taking the shape of Mayu to attract Mio to complete the ceremony. I guessed that the ritual "worked" because the death itself is not the important part but rather the action of killing your own sibling and the amount of feelings it releases so the ending would have been just a methapohore for Mio accepting that she was the one that kill her so that she, and probably the ghost of the true Mayu, could move on. If this is explain in an alternative ending or is a popular theory or something I would be so proud of myself lol.

Yess, the game had promos with these cinematics before the official release, but there also was a 4D experience in Japan which most of these cinematics come from. I could never find that 4D movie, but you can find some recordings from people that went there on YT.

Please cover Fatal Frame 3, or the rest of the series for that matter, because your way of storytelling actually makes it so that I can sit and listen the whole time despite having some form of an attention disorder. I've tried watching other channels cover 3 and I just can't stick with it.

Is it incorrect for me to interpret the gate and abyss as the same entity just manifesting in different aspects along eith the other dark gateways that appear in the rest of the series?

@@peterholmes7440 In Mask of the Lunar Eclipse, I find it weird that the Kiraigou is like the only ritual that doesn't require a human sacrifice, just dance to a song that the spirits find a bop, find five girls to play the necessary instruments, and then all the spirits on Rogetsu Island pass on.

Just people know. The ending is one of many different endings. The ending we saw was kind of the "bad ending". There are 2 other endings.

The canon ending is the one where Mio kills Mayu. In 3, it's stated Mio is lured into the House of Dreams due to her grief for her sister, and her uncle follows after her.

Regrettably, this ending is canon. The Promise ending, xbox exclusive, sees them both leaving and living. Hellish Abyss sees them doing the same BUT Mio is blinded and Mayu possessed, seemingly. Crimson Butterfly, the tragic, bittersweet ending sees Mio killing Mayu and living on with her buttefly mark into FF3, where Mio loses herself in the Manor of Sleep and dies. The wii remake saw two extra endings, Frozen Butterfly, which is the PROBABLE WORST ending out of all of them and Shadow Festival. Then there's game over ending which is Lingering Scent, where you straight up ditch your sister and wake up outside the village, lost in the woods and without Mayu.

I remember the first time I played fatal frame 2 and fighting the first ghost and if theres one thing that’s definitely great with Japanese ghosts is that they’re freaking terrifying to deal with!

I think it's one of those "open to interpretation" things. How I saw it was when Mio was near the Abyss, she was impacted by the madness of it. She lost rational thought. She carried out the ritual to satisfy the Hellish Abyss. And only realized what she had done after it was too late to undo it. The Hellish Abyss was newly satisfied by Mayu's death, and would be silent for another decade or so. The village vanished, the terrible events of that night would cease to repeat. But at a terrible cost to Mio.
