Sometimes a sublime work of art defines a genre, at least in the minds of later generations. "Lamento della Ninfa" is such a work: this madrigal in three parts by Claudio Monteverdi epitomizes the dramatic lament.
Making this video was certainly an exciting idea and a rewarding experience: gathering together in the great, empty, reverberant hall of this former cotton mill on a hot June afternoon, plunging ourselves headfirst into the recording process without prior rehearsal - much the same way they probably performed music almost 400 years ago in Monteverdi's day.
Performed by Maikki Säikkä, soprano, with Mats Lillhannus, tenor, Teemu Mustonen, tenor, Pekka Alonen, bass, Jussi Laukola, keyboards, Jouni Pusa, percussion and Tuomas Kourula, theorbo. Video & sound were recorded at the Barker cotton mill, Turku, Finland.

7/5/2024- I found this. The direction was different, refreshing and spectacular. The musicians and the chorus, spectacular. The soprano's voice, from ABOVE AND BEYOND. Bravisimo! 🖤🩶
