FINALLY, a straight forward clear explanation of the Synology hyperdrive. Not sure why Synology cannot seem to explain it as clearly. Great job!
You forgot to mention you need ExFat Access Installed on your NAS before this format option becomes available. This is available in your Package Center otherwise the ExFat option doesn't show at all. (Just encase anyone else needs that). Great vids mate, they've helped loads to figure this all out! Thank you.

Fantastic work yet again. Best in the biz Mr Spacerex! Thank you!
Thanks for sharing this tutorial, it helped me to set up my backups! Great content and great channel.
By far the best synology tutorial creator ever!
Great tutorial! Hyper Backup seems like a versatile tool with plenty of options for backing up your data. I appreciate the thorough walkthrough of different backup methods and settings. Definitely going to implement some of these tips for my own backup strategy. Thanks for sharing!
I hope Synology pays you to do all of this. These videos are extremely helpful. So thank you.
thank you. easy to understand and do. worked really well.
Love your videos! Would you consider updating your video on adding a drive to an existing storage pool for DSM 7? Most of the settings were in different places which would make it hard for a novice to follow.
Anyone else have an issue with their off-site NAS resetting itself? I've successfully setup an off-site backup, however it keeps resetting itself and needs the DSM reinstalled everytime. Pretty frustrating, would love to know any solves out there. Keep up the good work Space Rex, best NAS vids around.
Thank you! great guide and tips!🙂
Thank you for all the great training you have provided! I'm in the same boat as Jason Esterline running EXT4 and want to convert to BTRFS . I've held off so far because the thought of deleting my storage pool and restoring from backup scares the heck out me. Have you made a video of restoring a synology using Hyperback? If not would love to see one from you! Thanks again!
Thanks for excellent tutorial.
Can't thank you enough for all the great videos!
Thanks a lot, Really helpful !!
super helpful thanks!
Thank you for your videos! Very insightful! Do you know if you can also delete a specific folder from the backup (across the full time line) e.g. in case of inadvertently including a temporary video editing folder in the backup where you only want the folder with the final versions included. The Temp folder takes a lot of space and would be good it that could be taken out across the full time line.
I like your videos. In your backup example, will a fully recovery be possible for videos containing metadata? From what I read from Synology, the description (as an example) metadata is not stored in the file but in the database on the NAS. For other files such as JPG, the metadata is stored in both the file and the database. I want to be careful with my memoiries, which is why I'm asking.
Great video, thank you!
Another great video , thank you :)
Thanks for the video great explanation. I have a DS220+ with 2x10TB and have an external 14TB drive that I will be using as backup and I plan to see how effectively I can plug it to my computer in order to add it to my backblaze backup. I personally kind of have 3 types of data: 1. Personal/confidential and important. Like my documents, personal photos and videos. These take probably not much space but I try to keep them safe and they would be be very difficult or imposible to get back if they get removed 2. Media formats, basically all my movies and series or basically all my plex content. I like them but this is more of my data hoarder habits than anything else. I really don't care for them that much and if they are lost I would care a little bit but nothing that can't be downloaded again. However just because of the shear size and some times how old the media is probably not all of them would be easily recoverable so a local backup is needed. 3. Miscellaneous: My VMs, downloads etc. They are basis by basis, I have a lot of ISOs that I don't care too much since they are in the internet, but I have VMs for labs that I really want to keep but some other VMs that I don't mind loosing, a lot of downloads that I keep but don't need. This is the kind of content that is mostly as mentioned case by case. But for the most part I would try to backup in a cloud service just in case and if affordable enough.

How is this working for you?
Hi @SpaceRex, have you made a video about the (almost) full restore yet? I have made a hyperbackup in order to switch from Basic to SHR, but am wary of of the settings/configs that are not going to be restored.
Awesome work and great instructional videos SpaceRex. Thank you Do you have any recommendations for using an older SFF PC as a backup NAS to a main NAS rather buy an OEM NAS? Meaning which software and hardware configuration!!! I have an older Synology NAS with DSM 6.2 and an HP SFF PC with a few hard drive bays ready to repurpose for some other project. Thanks in advance.
I have a second Synology NAS that is set for file format EXT4, I know to set usage limits for the folders it should be Btrfs. Is there a way in hyperbackup to limit the destination storage size like Apple does with Time Machine? I haven't seen a setting like this anywhere in hyperbackup
thanks for the great walk through...I am using HyperBackup to my local external USB drive...but have been using Synology Cloud Sync as a 3rd tier backup...what are the pros/cons of cloud sync and cloud snapshots vs. HyperBackup. Which would you suggest?
hi. thank you for your videos, great job. i have a WD Mirror, i change the firmware version to synology DSM 6.0.2-8451 and i dont know what option i have to choose it. i have 2 bay,1st is 6tb, and the second one i would like to make an autobackup to copy all data from bay 1 to bay 2. what option i have to choose? thank you.
Hi thank you for the good job will you have a step by step setr up for a nas DS200J for an IT nerd ?? got one but dont seems to have set it up properly and need help Thanks
Great Video. I have an old WD unit on my network that I want to auto back up to. Which option should I use...? Thanks !
I have watched a number of your videos about Synology packages now and they have all been very helpful. I am "upgrading" from a single drive - mybooklive NAS a ds920+. I am looking for an automated way to copy the original nas to my new one. I have tried active business backup and it doesn't seem to work. I was going to try Hyperbackup but i feel like i will have a similar result. I am not trying to "Back up" anything. I want to copy everything over then get rid of the drive altogether. What package should i be using?
Thanks for detailed guide. Q: After updating to DSM 7, the "Local Folder and USB" doesn't show up. Had to look for it via the Search box. Wonder why. Any ideas?
Great video. Thnx. I have one question. I want to upgrade my DS414 if (hopefully) this year Synology rolls out some Plus series 2.5GbE models. As far as I understand their website, my DS414 is eligible for HDD transfer to a new DS but only to the new Value series. If I want to upgrade to a Plus series it won't work according to Synology. Is that really so? Thank you in advance.
Great video; I use Microsoft Azure for some years now and it's fantastic. However, how can I transfer the task to a different user?
Absolutely love your videos, you do amazing content. I watched this video a long time ago and it helped me set up my active back up to an old NAS. However, I’m having a problem with the back up and I was wondering if you happen to have a solution. My destination is full. I may have misunderstood how retention works, but I’m stuck in a deadlock. It fails to back up, and fails to discard the backup that failed, and it won’t allow me to delete any of my backups from that history viewer. I thought older backups would automatically get deleted, but in my case it didn’t happen. Any suggestion of how to get out of this loop and any changes to settings that I may have overlooked? And at the time you made this video, I know you suggested hyper backup was the best method, about a year later do you have a different opinion if I’m forced to have to start over?
Thanks again 👍
Can you make a video on how to schedule operation of sending a file as an email attachment and send it to a recepient? Simple operation, but I couldn't find a solution of that. Scripts or is there simpler way to do it? All backup solutions that exist within DSM don't allow to backup through email. I need just one Excel file as a report for every day.
Ah, I'm a video editor with about 12TB and growing. I should have went with HyperBackup over CloudSync. Looking forward to your video on restoring from a backup.

Glad you like the videos! Also if I were you (and I know you do not want to hear this) I would bite the bullet and switch over to Hyperbackup over cloud sync. You are going to need to do it at some point as cloud sync is a pretty poor backup tool and has some issues and its better to do it sooner rather than later
Hyperbackup is great, any pointers to do a complete system restore ( of hyperbackup) into another NAS with users, shares and all the apps would be great!. Thanks
Thanks, this is super helpful. Currently using a Synology 923+ (DSM 7.2) so, can I add encryption to an already set up NAS? Want to be sure that backups heading to USB drives and the cloud are encrypted.
Hi, I have an issue with obtaining the list of shared folders in the drop down list when I was setting up the Hyper Backup task between Synology NAS. Source DS920 and backup NAS DS723, installed HB Vault, created shared folder.
Nice video, thanks for the great explanation. I just have one question. Do I have to flash the harddrive bevor I can make a backup? The format of the harddrive is already ExFat and I have already pictures and document on it.
The problem I'm encountering is that the backup process creates two additional directories above the directory I specified during setup. Do you have any suggestions on how I can ensure that it uses the directory I choose? I used the "rsync copy (Single-version)" method to backup to a TrueNAS with Rsync Modules.
Is it possible to backup to mounted CIFS shared folder?
File filters are pretty limited in my opinion, though. It doesn't support wildcard folder names. For example, if you have code projects, there's no way to exclude all node_modules directories which can be huge amounts of wasted space of dependencies. This applies to Synology Drive as well, which would benefit even more from that functionality.
Is it possible to have two Synologys and use the remote nas device option for each of them. So synology 1 is a backup to synology 2 and vice versa? I currently have 2 synologys backing up devices in 2 locations and want to have a backup of each.
I have a Box cloud account but in Cloud Services Backup Destination, I don't see an option for Box. How can this account be utilised?
I changed the Shared folder name usbshare1 and now it's saying "offline" - and I cannot rename it usbshare1 - it's saying this is a name that system uses. How do I get my USB backup online again where the NAS is talking to my SSD USB backup. Thanks!
Great videos my friend. A friend tried to backup with Active backup, surprisingly next morning was an error, could it be the PC going to a sleep mode maybe? Should we disable standy, sleep moed? Than you...
I have a few hard drives that I would love to set up into a raid setup to backup my Synology to. Is this possible?
I have Synology 4 bay. Currently using only 2 bays. Can I use one of the empty bay for hyper backup? Or it has to be only external usb drive? I’m planning to make a full backup of symbology NAS once a month or week and keep the drive away from the office in case of fire. Please let me know.
So i was looking at this video based on your comment on my question in your other video but looks hyper backup is backing up NAS... What about creating different backup of files that are on computer hdd to NAS... like diff pathways for diff files to diff shared folders.. .. is that possible on huper backup ?
I just discovered that there is a separate app specifically for AWS glacier on the DSM! Earlier, I had tried everything, S3 worked, but no luck with glacier. And bought a second NAS for backups. Glacier is cheap, 3.6$ per TB/month, but still not Insignificant. So I will be happy with my second NAS.
The only think I still don't know is if I can do the safety box thing with a drive temporarily inserted into a free bay for the back-up instead of an external drive or with two alternating drives once a month.
so ? i want set versions 2 or 1 only ? fine ?
It looks as if the file filter is no longer existing in Hyperbackup. Or do I find it elsewhere?
Thx for this great video @spacerex. You say that the C2 pricing is about 1 USD per month per 1 TB. When I check the pricing it is 6 (basic) or 7 (advanced) USD per month per 1TB, hence 6-7 times higher. How I can get your pricing?
Curious... Why did you leave the "One day 1 hour" retention active after you created the "3 month daily" retention policy?
Hey dude, i just had a question. Would it be possible for me to backup an 8 TB synology NAS to two external 4 TB hard disks?
Great video, it's making me reconsider where to back up my NAS. I'm currently on an AWS S3 plan, but maybe Synology C2 would be better. What would you consider "crazy large terabytes" in that sense? My data is currently around 8 TB and will probably grow at a rate of 1-2 TBs per year.

Alsom wondering. I'm at 22 TB with 2TB per year. Want at least a 10 TB backup for now.
Great video - However towards the end I don't see how it would be possible to also restore application data and settings. My main interest in backup is if the NAS is utterly trashed and I need to quickly restore both my user data AND application settings. Would it back up my SSL/TLS certificates from let's encrypt?
Great video dude…
Hi. Can you advise, i wanted to do hyperbackup for my Synology Nas. But the situation is like this. My data is on Synology Nas Place A (Office) and Other Synology Nas is at Place B (Home). I wanted to do hyperbackup all data collected in Place A to Place B. These two Synology Nas using different network.
Great video and suggestions! Does anybody know if I can I do a remote hyperbackup from a synology running btrfs into one on ext4? I am planning to get a cheaper synology for backup and would not support btrfs. Thanks!

My friend, I don't see MS One drive service?
Can you back up NAS to NAS on the NAS? As an example, in a 4 bay with 4 8tb drives, can you set up 2 RAID 1 arrays and back The first RAID 1 arrays to the second RAID 1 arrays.
I have to synology in two locations. In first location there is Active Backup and backup few PC to Synology 1. And on second location there is also Active Backup and also backup few PC to Synology 2. Now I want to "backup of Active backup" for Synology 1 goes to Synology 2 and "backup of Activebackup" for Synology 2 goes to Synology 1. How to achive it? Hyper BAckup maybe Backup Replication /I prefer HB/ and it will be possibile not to mix 2 folders Activebackup /Synology1 and Synology2/ Maybe there is option create in AB folder instead Activebackup for example ActivebackupSyno1 and on second ActivebackupSyno2 and now for example I want to restore files in Synology 1 from folder ActivebackupSyno2 ? I don't know if I write it down clearly. :)
thanks for this tutorial. this video is really useful to me. i have a question about the timeframe between 13:08 -13:23. if i chose automatically remove the USB when the task has successfully finished, will it automatically connect when the next backup task comes?

The way that is setup to work is basically back the drive up and eject it so you can unplug it. If you select this you would have to unplug it and plug it back in to get it to run again
Does "compress backup data" reduce the quality of your photos and videos after a restore? Thanks.
I want to clone (transfer, copy, whatever you want to call it) my old Synology NAS to a new Synology NAS. What is the best method? Will installing the old drives onto the new unit and then upgrading the drives work? Or is it better to transfer data to the new drives? Thanks
Hi, What about using the usb drive formatted in NTFS? I'm currently using in NTFS and if i go now to "Format", it only shows EXT4 and FAT32. (DS920+, latest DSM 7 version, and a 2.5" external HDD) Thanks

Ok, SpaceRex - thank you for all the amaZing information for us ProSumers - as for backing up the drive beyond encrypted C2 solultions, I also use external HD (SanDisk ProExtreme) for the local solultion to the 1-2-3 approach. I have four of these and they all have heat issues under load... so much so, I put them in the freezer before I use them. Can you reccomend a better external HD for this approach?
@SpaceRex @ 12:30 you aren't clear about whether the photos are being backed up up when you select Synology Photos (you used the words most of the times it backes up only the settings). I want to create a hyperback up of all my synology apps and there settings ONLY without any databases, would not like the photos to be backed up specially. what would be the right course here.
I followed your dierctions to backup my Synology DS420 and it took a long time to back up, but when I went and opened the backup I saw no files to recover!!??? All I see is Config Control guard Pool Version and some other text. Where are my files?
Question: Say I use Hyper Backup to back up my NAS to Google Drive, and then my NAS gets stolen or totally destroyed somehow - Will I still be able to access Hyper Backup and restore my files from the cloud to my Macbook? Do I need the Hyper Backup Desktop app for that?
This is excellent. Thanks Spacerex. How can I read the .hbk files if I connect that external backup drive directly into a Mac / PC ?

Thank you for your many useful and super nice videos! May I ask why FAT32 for the external USB disk? Reading a bit online seems EXT4 is more appreciated by the Synology Nas it terms of speed and reliability, not sure if I'm right. Also about the file names restriction with FAT32... I'm in a situation where I need to run a backup for the first time to an offsite NAS and I know it'll take many days...can I specify a schedule so that that initial backup should pause during, say, business hours?
Any idea if using Hyper Backup will retain sharing links to the files? I want to upgrade my hard drives in my Synology with bigger ones. I am using Raid 0 so I plan hyper backing up all my files and retaining the folder structure. I don't think there is a way to make drive backup everything daily. Im wondering if the first backup completed and ifs just the first one to keep going
I was thinking about a backup solution that I don't see developped online. It is to use an extra hd in the NAS as a second volume and backup on it. As I understand I could even hot remove it and put it away times to times for safety reason and put it back when needed. Is that possible ? Or is an external drive a better solution ?

That is not how hyperbackup works. If you need more than one usb drive you need to setup two tasks and have each backup half the shared folders
Great tutorial! Is it possible to backup the data on the NAS HDDs to an External HDD without using the .hbk format? For example let's say I want to backup/export everything from my NAS to an External HDD and be able to see the folders/files on any computer without any NAS software.
@SpaceRexWill
Жыл бұрын
No. you would want to do the 'single version' option. This would let you see all the files. Otherwsie you have to download hyperbackup viewer
The single version has also one big i'd call it a bug, that prevents me from using it, even if i could live with ransomware threat. When i just copy a file to exFAT formatted drive, and that file name contains some not allowed in exfat character, like '*' the name will just be changed, the forbidden character will be replaced. In hyper backup in that situation it just fails, that's it. I so much miss the option to turn on "automatically change name of any file that destination drive doesn't support", without that it is just useless for me, i have a lot of files that are not named correctly for exfat drive
Great video....one that might get you some views is a full restore from C2 cloud back-up after drive upgrades (ex: DS220+)....much harder than you think and I'm having tons of issues that has required me to work closely with Synology with (so far) no progress. Basically my C2 restore fails at 2/6TB.

Have a question the USB port on the back could you use a powered USB hub with that?, have you tried it? According to Synology they say you can not use a USB hub. Why I ask im about to get my first Synology (upgrading from a WD MyCloud) and want use the USB on the back for connecting to a UPS and a large USB external drive for scheduled backups of the NAS. Think the key might be to use a powered hub as im sure Synology are saying no because the port might not power multiple devices properly if a none powered hub is used. What your thoughts on this?

Would it be better to break up the back up into several different smaller tasks instead of one big backup? Example, have a separate HyperBackup task for photos, documents, other folders, etc. That way if something goes wrong and you need to re-do a backup you only have to do the partial one, not the whole thing from scratch which takes forever. I ask because I accidentally backedup 200Gb to BackBlaze that I never indented to. I deleted the version of the backup but the BackBlaze bucket didn’t decrease in size even though I have the bucket set to only keep the most recent copy of files (no versioning in BackBlaze). The only thing I know to do is delete the buck and start over which will take several days.

Any advice between a single version Rsync job and a Remote synology job ? I need to mirror a shared folder and my choice was the Rsync single version job with block-track option. @@SpaceRexWill i’m only on local network between two synology. The rsync backup job takes 24h The initial copy was 14To so i understand the 24h to perform the copy. But i dont know why it takes the same time to perform next jobs supposed to be incremental.
Great video! Question for you... when I got my first Synology NAS back in Sept 2021 I bought the DS220j which doesn't have BTRFS capabilities. About a week later I found the DS220+ on sale and bought it. I migrated my drives over to it seamlessly - however, there is no way that I found to convert from EXT4 to BTRFS. Am I really missing out by not having snapshots? My current setup has my computer (laptops and desktops) automatically backing up files to a Backup Share along with some storage directly on the NAS, then every night backing up the NAS to iDrive. Thanks!

I will be honest with you, its probably worth it while you are just starting out to go through and upgrade to BTRFS. There are a ton of apps and other features that require BTRFS

I've been using iDrive for cloud backup as well. It's a good deal in terms of price per Tb of storage. However, I just tried restoring all my data on there recently and it's not too good with that.
