The Complete History of Royals Shortstops (1969-2022)

Спорт

Normally we as fans discuss the greatest to play a position. Whether its Johnny Bench at Catcher, or Mike Schmidt at Third, but seldom do we discuss the flip side AKA the worst to play. Now what if there was a team that took refuge for some of the worst players to play at a specific position. I present to you the Kansas City Royals at shortstop. We will look at some key players and determine how this was able to happen and as a special treat, we will take a look into the future as the Royals prepare to see their new franchise shortstop absolutely take the reigns.

Clarifications/Corrections (Subject to Update)
-At 1:20 I say that shortstop is the only position you're considered a defensive liability if you are not able to make an accurate 90+ Foot throw with your momentum trailing away you. I know that this is a very subjective statement, but I will maintain that this is treated as as bonus for 2nd and 3rd basemen while its treated as a must for a shortstop. Feel free to argue.
-At 12:15 is an obvious mistake as you can see the difference between 6'3" and 6'4" is clearly bigger than sub 5'6" and 5'6". Honestly, I shouldve grouped anyone 6'4" or bigger as obviously its a fairly uncommon height. I think you get the picture, but yeah obviously thats a glaring mistake.

David Howard was somehow on the "protected" list for the 1993 expansion draft, in favor of the organization's top prospect Jeff Conine, whom the Marlins drafted, and went on to a solid career in south Florida. Remember that spectacular diving, over-the-shoulder catch by Jim Edmonds? The batter was David Howard. It only played out that way because Edmonds was playing the weak-hitting Howard pretty shallow and had to scramble back to snag that longer-than-expected line drive to center.

The best part about Alcides Escobar is that he batted lead-off for the 2015 world champion Royals. I wonder if he is the worst leadoff hitter to win a world series since 1990.

Great video, hope you pop off in the algorithym soon. My favorite banana facts is that bananas are sterile meaning you can’t sow seeds and grow them. Bananas are grown by cutting a piece from another plant, sort of cloning. Which means the banana you are eating today is genetically the same as the banana your grandparents ate.

As bad as Jackie Hernandez was with the 1969-70 Royals, he got a lot of playing time with the 1971 World Series winning Pirates. In fact, in a 2-1 seventh game win, he went behind second base to throw out the last Oriole in the final inning.

Man, I used to think the Twins had it bad with shortstops in their team history, but at least they got that one MVP season from Zoilo, excellent defense from Greg Gagne and All Star seasons from Roy Smalley, Christian Guzman and Jorge Polanco. Correa has been absolute crap for the Twins this year, but he’s already one of the 3-4 best shortstops in team history by default. Also Bobby Witt looks like he’s going to completely obliterate all shortstop records for the Royals going forward, they finally got a good one.

His OAA this year is +13 at short. I'd like to say he's improved his defense. I'd be more concerned about his OBP. It hasn't really improved and will hinder him when his batted ball luck stops going his way.

In most states in the north, those signs "serving white only" didn't exist. I guarantee racism existed back then in the northern states, but nothing like southern states. 99% white does not mean it's racist. I'm talking about the people, the government implemented racist laws, like redlining, etc. But everyday citizens didn't think like that, just like most Iowans don't now. Especially then, it is more about the religion of strangers that bonds you to them than their skin color. Back then, a Christian was a Christian. My grandma grew up in a house that always had 2 or 3 kids from South America who stayed with them on a study abroad program for the church. Like foreign exchange students.
