The COMPLETE History of Minecraft's Far Lands (2009-2022)
Ойындар
From a simple flat world to a complex, multi-dimensional sandbox game, Minecraft has a vast history. One of the most fascinating things to look at are the distance effects of the game. Minecraft has always had bugs and glitches when you travel super far away. So, in this video, we will take a deep dive into the amazing history of Minecraft's distance limits. This video will cover much more than just the far lands.

they should re add the farlands, cause nobody would casually travel 12 million blocks not expecting anything. people that walk there know they exist and want to see them, they should be added to the game

8:08 The reason why the Far Lands appear different in the earlier Infdev build was because the interval between sampling points on the Y axis was most likely 4 blocks like on the X and Z axes, and it was only changed to 8 blocks on the Y axis later in Infdev. Noise is only calculated at sampling points and interpolated in between using a quintic equation whose overflowing at the floating-point limit results in another set of Far Lands far beyond 2^63, which I refer to as the Fringe Lands. 10:18 The Far Lands can generate smooth at their initiation if one of the noise generators has an offset that pushes the value at 12550824 just slightly over 2^31, and it is a rather nice effect. 11:26 It can actually be seen when teleporting in the negative direction on only one axis (i. e. -25101648 150 1 or 1 150 -25101648) in the form of minor changes in the artifacts of the Edge Far Lands.

this video is great, really in depth. the way the game responds to the player being so far out is what interests me the most about the farlands so having it explained in a linear way is super helpful :D your editing and commentary style is also super engaging. hope to see more video essay/documentary style stuff in the future!

Only a few people have done that, and it took speedrunners just over 9 months (idk how long they were playing per day.) If you can keep interested that long, go for it! But make sure you know what they'll function like in your version of the game, in the 1.2 something latest version you can't travel out further without teleporting because you can't move within the stripes of the stripe lands (I need to find the actual farland farlands in this version though)

HI MOONIE
Good videos man! Keep up the good work!
When console edition first moved to bedrock, that day I discovered the striped lands. I also discovered that using an extra with rockets lets you fly through it, albeit extremely jittery
I remember a couple years back (2016-2018? Perhaps earlier) if you made your world a small world (basically a world thats pretty small and has a void around if) on pocket edition you could actually stand on the void if you flew above build height. It was very weird. This wasn't the normal void, the void was basically like nothing but it felt more physical? Not sure how to explain it
@charmich
10 ай бұрын
That's not the void, that's a block called invisible bedrock, it is solid and attempting to break it instead targets the block behind it

I still wish Notch had finished those sky dimensions and not done the end
holy shit dude, this is such an amazing video. im so glad this was in my recommendation.
Bruh why do you only have 84 subs, your work is simply so underrated
The reason hitboxes break and the graphics glitch out is because the floating-point numbers that handle all of the game's math become less accurate the larger they are. Floating point is just a fancy name for how computers calculate decimal numbers. This is also responsible for just about every other bug relating to distance, including the "stutter" and flat flowers. Stuff like this happens in just about every other game too, including CS:GO for instance.
You managed to show me ways to break Minecraft I haven't even seen Antvenom do! =D Good stuff~
Amazing video, you deserve more subs. Correction at 5:31: The terrain past 16,777,216 is not solid, not 32 million. But in the next version(Infdev 13th March) Notch fixed terrain collision and added a world border at 32 million(to prevent far lands), it completely stops the terrain generation, similar to the world border in 1.7 at 27:00 or 7:06, however, in alpha version 1.2, the world border got changed and continues rendering after 32 million, which renders "fake chunks".

I like advanced explanations behind far lands, because it really is just the tip of a big iceberg behind the behaviors of mathematical limits in computing, how bad floating points can go if you push then to the extreme conditions, the effects in different games, even Roblox has a little "far lands", basically, as you reach the 32 Bit Integer Limit, roblox collision and rendering breaks down, more other games have the same problem as it can't be easily fixed at all.
@tristantheoofer2
Жыл бұрын
yep but robloxs max distance is 340.2 undecillion instead of minecrafts 179.76 uncentillion due to using floats instead of doubles like minecraft does. like i can literally drive in a game to like 32768 studs out and see the floating point start getting fucked up. also around 1-2 trillion studs and at some points beyond the skybox in roblox flashes in and out of existence for some reason
@Cr_nch

@@tristantheoofer2”for some reason” well it’s also just because of floating point imprecision. Eventually you’re so far out the likely skybox snaps in and out of the camera’s view.

The Blocks being glitched at 16,777,216 blocks out is actually the cause For The Stripelands to Generate that far out on Bedrock Edition. They still exist In modern Versions of Bedrock Minecraft. The Farlands Were in Bedrock Edition until 1.17.But Bedrock edition has a glitch where you can randomly fall through the world if you are more than 2048 blocks from spawn. The farther out you go. The higher the chance to fall through the world, The harder it is to walk. Where the farlands used to be in bedrock edition, At the corners, There is floating blocks called Skygrid. I don't know if its in the modern version of bedrock edition or not.

cosmic horror, i think. it's similar the how black holes and distant space objects freak me out. it's these things that are much bigger than us, much more powerful. however, i think part of the farlands that's horrifying is that it signifies the beginning of the end of minecraft as a simulation. it is terrifying to think of a being that is higher, more powerful than reality itself. when reality breaks down, the thing we depend on to provide the fundamentals of our world, we are terrified of the force that brings reality itself down. and i think the farlands kind of represent that in a way. it's what makes diseases like alzheimer's so terrifying to some because it's as if reality itself is breaking down to the person who has the disease.
3:07 same thing can happen in roblox where if you go too far from spawn, your player or just objects can just do that.

A LOT of "flavors" of "FarLands" have existed in the Bedrock version. Sadly those are lost. They were absolutely amazing. Stretching blocks, falling through the world but being able to sit in a boat or ride a horse, funny stuff. I wish there were more bedrock edition archives.
I love that a good way to get beds with a auquid pause 9:08
8:06 its because that from this infdev until a few later, the world generation would generate more hills and such and would be wayyy more extreme and it not exactly how the world gen would be in Alpha and so on, its only a few infdev versions later that world gen would be reworked to how it is in Alpha/Beta (in Beta its the same world gen only that they also added biomes to the map as well but overall same world gen)
