The Complete History of Harald Fairhair | Part 1

The first episode in The Complete History of Harald Fairhair.
The story of Harald Fairhair begins in the year 818 when his supposed father, the legendary Halfdan the Black, is born. He grows up with his mother, Åsa the Powerful, in the kingdom of Agder, which she inherited by her father when he was murdered. In the years to come, the idea of a large, Norwegian Kingdom formed in the minds of men and women who lived in the lower southern parts of today's Norway, areas that at the time were dominated by the danes, primarily because of its close proximity to the Jylland Peninsula through seaway.
Hope you enjoy!

Like so many others, the Vikings tv show really diminished Harald Fairhair. He was actually one of the greatest Vikings in history. First King to unite a Viking country. And it didn't happen anything like the tv show depicted. He defeated all of his rivals in battle.

@@sebastianwendelbo5453 Good point. He is very underrated. And the Vikings show didn't help with that. He was the first unified King of a Viking nation. So you do have a valid argument. I like Rollo as #1 because his founding of the Norman Dynasty changed the entire course of Europe's history. Most Royal families all across Europe had a Norman connection. The few left today have Norman connections. But you could be right, he probably should be higher on the list. Thanks for the input. 👊

He was known as Harald Luva «the Hooded» as he vowed not to cut his hair until all of Norway was under his control. The epitaph of Fairhair was probably first given by English sources to a later king Harald, known as Hardrada, but somehow switched in Norway at a fairly recent age.

From the show? No. There was no Athelstan residing at the court of King Ecbert thus getting involved in the major politics of the time. Now, there could have been a Northumbrian priest named Athelstan. Who knows. But there were very important Athelstans like King Athelstan who became Bretwalda which meant the had the fealty of Welsh, Brythonic, Scottish, and some Irish kings and lords as well as Anglo Saxon. There were also other high earls and lords name Athelstan.
