Great video! I've got a couple of sonoff basics waiting to be used at home and now I finally feel like I understand enough to get to it!

I flashed my first firmware today - a Sonoff TH16 device - based on the information provided in your video. Thank you for an excellent, well-done video explanation of how to accomplish it. Some things have changed, e.g., the bin file is named tasmota.bin instead of sonoff.bin, and the board is different in the latest Sonoff TH16 devices (Ver 2.1). The circuit board now has a fifth pin labeled "EXP-LOG" in addition to VCC, RX, TX, and GND. I had to use a bench power supply (instead of just using the USB port on my iMac) and tweak the voltage up to 3.5V in order to get one of the boards to successfully complete the flash operation. Using NodeMCU PyFlasher as you recommended had the added benefit that I could erase the firmware at the start of each repeated attempt when one device kept aborting midway through the upload of the tasmota firmware; (it took me a dozen attempts to successfully flash that device). I sincerely appreciate your video. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

Thanks for another great video. I was shocked to see 12 thumbs down. I pondered it for a while and came up the only thing that could cause that. Watching your videos can be a little like trying to drink from a fire hose. But this is really a positive. The video can be paused AND the settings allow you to set the audio speed to .75 (or less). Then in a few months watching it again at full speed will be just right. And most of us will watch it again. A brilliant plan by you.

Another excellent video Rob. I recently installed home assistant on a raspberry pi and separately installed Tasmota on 2 wemos d1 minis but I haven't merged the two, I'm still using smartthings.

When I first stumbled across this sw name I was glad to see it only because it appeared to be freeing you from coding and using some sort of block approach but after just hearing you say you need to "issue the command" my heart fell. That was around 11:12 of your video.

i have using Tasmota since the start of my home automation. So far it has not disappointed me. Great video on the Tasmota. Perhaps some advance Tasmota video coming up?

Great video Rob, I have been playing with Tasmota and ESPHome, was considering changing everything over to ESPHome but this video has made me think. Have you played with ESP? If so, what made you stick with Tasmota? Also, my opinion, but I prefer the jump cuts rather than the speed changes, makes it look like there is something wrong with my browser, although I like that you are trying different things!

Tasmota is brilliant! FYI SmartThings integration doesn't always work out of the box... I had to add a few lines to the device handler to get my Gosund wall switches to generate child devices while using a generic template. The ability to control separate devices with the click or click & hold on a wall switch is basically like being able to rewire your entire house to your liking without having to pull any wire. Awesome!

You are right on the money. Tasmota is great. I just dont see the logic of using a different firmware build for every device as in ESPHome. Dont get me wrong ESPHome is good too but its just so much easier to use the default version of Tasmota and configure changes as you like.

Another great video, had a question, using hassio and just updated some switches to tasmota that I want to use with alexa. I saw in previous video on node red you created flows to do this, but seems easier to update the tasmota switch to use the hue bridge and friendly name. Is there a reason to use node red over updating the switch?

You don't need to put in the %20 - just hit the space bar. The makers intended that you use a space for your convenience. If you were forced to use %20 for a space, then they'd have gone with something else, such as a hyphen or an equals sign. Have to say, it's the first time I've ever heard some refer to a simple "slash" as "front slash."

Great Video, very useful, I have got a couple of RF bridges flashed with Tasmoto, what I'm trying to do is use these as devices to send RF codes for TV lifts, is it possible that the bridge running tasmoto can learn RF and I can associate this with a button on the main panel so that when I send a HTTP request to the bridge it triggers the RF to be sent therefore lifting or retracting the lift system ?

Great video, I now have a place to go for simple reminders. Have you considered using the backlog commands to set SSID and MQTT up with the console of the PyFlasher? Save some steps.

Console of the PyFlasher doesn't have 2-way communications. I use Coolterm (mac) and I think most windows tutorials recommend Termite. I agree though, it's easier to setup via a serial console while it's still connected.

Hey Rob, thanks for the video! Learned a lot. Do you know if there's a simple way to control e.g. CC2500 transceivers with Tasmota utilizing templates? My use case is to control Ikea Ansluta LED controllers. Ended up with a homegrown solution, but MQTT, unified management and rules would be nice. Best regards!

Your videos got me going down the HA rabbithole, so thanks! I'm now trying to write a rule on 'switch1' that sends a command to 'switch2' when it (switch1) when the voltage going through it exceeds 100V (it's going to be used to power on a dustcollection when a powertool is switched on), but I'm not getting there. I know how to do this in the tasmota console but i want the timer to be changable from home assistant. i.e, setting up a number slide in home assistant and do http request automation when state is changed. Thank you in advance! Edit: If someone says "why don't you do the timer thing via home assistant itself?"... I want the device to be stand alone as much as possible so that even if hassio failed while relay is on, it will still shut off by itself! :)

Ya, that's a bit weird. Mine are set however. When I get HFW this evening I will post my command for US Central time, but if you google the question, you will find answers like I did. You have to set the DST period and the ST period, and it is odd formatting, but it works...

I will search but while I do want to ask if you have a simple video showing how to upload and configure this software on the ESP8266 Microcontroller? I noticed you refer to the devices you are uploading this sw as existing commercial products as in switching outlets. I would like to use the sw in my ESP8266 Microcontroller and use relays connected to pins for control. Or use this software with Wemos mini D1.

great video and many thanks.... One question: I followed your instructions and was able to tasmotize flawlessly... Now I want to revert back to my light's original FW but having issues. when I try to upload manually I get an error. I even try to power cycle 7 times (even higher number of counts) to get the tasmota to go into configuration mode but with no luck. I keep getting "Upload buffer miscompare" I searched google and it looks like mismatch on file size that causes this. I even tried tc_donor_mini.generic_1M.bin and tasmota-minimal.bin and getting similar error message. any help is greatly appreciated. thanks

Can I ask, honest question. My stock Sonoff Basic R2 uses around 1.5W idle and 2.5W active. By active I mean the device is powered on. That's quite a lot in particular when I was hoping to use 1 sonoff (POW actually) per line (light/socket). That's 100 total. I realise 100 wifi devices all in 1 box, things could go bad on that side but back to my objective. I want to measure and graph power usage of everyone of these devices (sure I could combine some lights to reduce a bit) for the purpose of being as frugal as possible with electricity. So while I have hope to reduce power usage by 150W ish I wonder if there's a way via a custom firmware flash (Tasmota/ESPHome/any other) to also reduce the idle/active power use, specifically for sonoff basic r2 and pow r2. I'm also open to any other suggestions and conversations around wifi/zwave/zigbee (btw I intended to get an access point dedicated to the electric box where they would be.) And of course the primary reason for sonoff is the price :) Edit: I should add I also am not done building the house so maybe there's another solution that's wired instead of wireless and as inexpensive?

Used NodeMCU PyFlasher to install Tasmota on a Wemos D1 Mini. No troubles. Got to the portal page, set up my local SSID and password, rebooted the device. From that point forward, any time the D1 was plugged in, ALL wireless devices were kicked off the network. Had to physically power off-on the router to recover. Plug in the D1 again, boom, everything's dead. I've never seen anything like it. Thoughts?

This is the guide I've been looking for and then you ran right past MQTT. I'm just now starting to setup Tasmota. I'm extremely confused. I've got a couple of different devices for home automation. I have a Zigbee switch and I'm not sure how to use it. Do I need a hub of some kind? I've got an ESP32-S2 that I flashed with Tasmota. What do I need to make MQTT work? I tried setting up Mosquito on a Raspberry Pi but I have no idea how to configure it so it's available to Tasmota. I thought I'd find the MQTT information here but I think this guide assumes MQTT is already running.

Hi Rob, might not be the right video, but maybe you can help. My Sonoff Mini with Tasmota Basic works fine with a normal switch connected to S1/S2, but when instead of switch I connect push button to the S1/S2 Mini does not stay on/off even if I change GPIO4 to the "switch 3 or 4.

Haha, it’s always the simple problems that cause the most headache.

I was looking for the Integrations page you mentioned but the link just goes to the Tasmota github page. Do you know if its moved? Noting on the site seems to refer to it. And does anyone know if the integration still works with the new changes to SmartThings since Oct 2020?

Is there any way to find out what valid tasmota-rule triggers are for a given module by using the Tasmota console? Tasmota documentations are lacking or dated at times. I've configured a Martin Jerry SD01 dimmer using Tasmota 8.4 with module type set to "PWM Dimmer." I'm trying to create a rule that would send an mqtt command to another tasmota device when the MJ on/off switch is short pressed. I tried this: rule1 on switch1#state=2 do publish cmnd/otherTasmotaDevice/power toggle endon; rule1 1. But the publish doesn't fire. I know the MQTT message is correct because when I sent it via an MQTT client (i.e. MQTT.fx), the otherTasmotaDevice power toggled as expected. So I speculate my rule trigger is invalid, but can't find documentation on what the correct trigger should be.

I'm back. Another question. How do you change the Tasmota web UI's Off & On states from showing 0 or 1 to showing On & Off instead. Thanks.

Thanks for the video!! I am trying to perform the following.. I have 3 RGBW bulbs in a light post outside and in HA, i have a input select setup that sends a command to the bulb via Node when i select for example halloween - it sends a light.on service with the color orange to the bulbs. I am now looking to setup a local rule on the tasmota bulb that listens for a trigger from the input select and when i gets that payload, i want the bulb to turn on, set the color to red, pause 5 seconds, set the color to green and repeat until i send a stop command to it or turn off the bulb. Hoping this is possible. Thank you!!

Best way to do this is probably to set up a "fake" relay on your RGB bulb in tasmota and then send the trigger to that relay (cmnd/bulb/power2), then make a rule to send a backlog of commands when it gets that trigger.

Hi. Is there anyway to wire ESP8266? I have a scenario where I can’t fix wifi signal issues but can run a wire to ESP. Need your advice other than using an external antenna.

Hi, im uploaded the latest tasmota sonoff firmware to a 8266, can connet to the ESP network, see the device ip and the router (esp) ip, but cannot connect to it. Any idea? Tried with the basic firmware too.

I've been experimenting flashed my sonoff with esptool all was going great but when I saved the WiFi it seems like it picked up a stray character on the WiFi name and now cannot access it. I can flash it again, but curious if there is a way to access it thru the serial port to change to the proper WiFi name

You can set-up a pseudo relay that is basically a command buffer in the program. It will turn it on and off like it is real, but all that happens is in software, not hardware. For instance the Slampher Sonoff device has an RF receiver that always turns on and off POWER1. If you RF-connect a Sonoff PIR device, the PIR signal will turn it on, the next PIR signal turns it off. The light flashes on and off. I disconnected the internal relay from POWER1 and attached the internal relay to POWER2 (using a template). I then made a rule set that when it sees that POWER1 is on it turns on POWER2 which is actually connected to the relay and the light goes on. Then the PIR can toggle POWER1 on and off and I don't care. POWER2 goes off after a time delay turning the light off. The device has 1 relay, but uses POWER1 and POWER2 where POWER2 is the power mechanical relay, and POWER1 stores the status of the received RF signal from the PIR box. I have a project on it in the Home Assistant Community projects pages if you are interested. Also check out Travis (Digiblur) on KZread. I learned my rules tricks from him.

Not sure why you would want to do that... Just go to the IP address of the device, click console, issue the rule, then enable the rule

@@yurid7418 Got ya. Ok, I tried it... Looks like it truncates the command after the Hashbang. Not sure if there is a way around this... Maybe its not something the developer envisioned someone trying. Heres the command I tried: 192.168.1.243/cm?cmnd=rule2%20on%20switch1#state=2%20do%20power%20toggle%20endon%20on%20switch1#state=3%20do%20publish%20cmnd/KuLED/power%20toggle%20endon It definitely started to write the rule... it just stopped after switch1.

If you need to do a string of commands via HTTP you could, you would do it external of the Tasmota device and create something in HTTP to send it. The power is in the internal rules, however. Long press Short press, for instance, can make this device control 2 things that may or may not be the internal relay of the device. Kind of freaky, right? Usually the status lights are also available for external control and devices with a beeper you can control that, play a song, make it a doorbell sounder. The rabbit hole goes deep my friend.

In my case I don' want to make long instructions with beep conditions because, parents for instance, that a little bit deaf can not distinguish beeps. So the config and rules should be pushed over Android device and my Android app can generate every, even complex, HTTP request for sure. BTW in last versions I saw some scripting functions. Might be this can help me ?

Tasmota uses CMD(command), STAT(Status), and TELE(Telemetry) built into their firmware for device control.

@@HelloHelloXD OK. Well the topic is like a street address, and is open format. Start with structure that makes sense to you and roll with it. Lay it out on paper first. I want all my cameras to start with camera/... OR whatever you can imagine.... It is roll your own if you are picking. Devices usually have a topic structure they respond to. Oh, yes, LWT is special, it is the topic that the broker sends if it can't find the device, showing the device has died.

I seem to be the only one noob enough to not understand the MQTT initial configuration part. Here I am following the steps, I see him put an IP in host name and since I dont know where that came from, I copy it and then my device keeps failing the comunication until it resets itself. Where will I get the IP to put in the host?

When using the Sonoff Mini with Tasmota through the MQTT the device only flashes the blue LED once when it is activated, the icon in the application shows that it has been turned on but the lamp doesn't turn on. Through the browser I turn on and off the light using the command 192.168.2.156/cm?cmnd=Power On. How can I fix it? Thank you for your attention.
