I mean yes but it's not fair to Giannis, Wilt was just something else. I'm trying to think of pure athletic ability who you could put in the same class. Herschel Walker, Jenner, the two great OTs Munioz and Thomas, maybe Bo, Mario or Big Z from strongman but that's about it.

He was a great natural athlete with no supplements or steroids. 7 foot , runs like a track star, jumps like a Olympic athlete. No special cooks and Drs .no first class traveling .

Exactly. People are saying Alcindor, James and Jordan, are goats... And we all know, the later two were on peds. Jordan has liver damage from them, and Lebron...well he is 115kg monster that can play a 50 pt game while at the age of 37... You get the idea. Its millions of dollars worth of peds that 95' onward NBA players put in themselves. Just imagine if Wilt was a modern era guy. And if he used peds, which would probably be likely, considering he has an extremely competative personality. He would be 140+ kg heavy, unstopable wall of muscles, that would make Shaq look like a child lost in the playground. He would have the same numbers now as he had then, I have no doubt in my mind.

I'm old and I had the pleasure of watching the amazing Wilt Chamberlain. Wilt was over 7'2" with shoes on and he was wide and unbelievably strong. I have great respect for centers like Bill Russell and Kareem who you could make an argument for being the greatest center of all-time but Wilt is easily the most dominant player I've ever seen and it's not even close. No player in history has ever averaged 30 ppg and 20 rpg in a season, except Wilt. Wilt averaged 30 and 20 for his CAREER.

@Myke Mynah The first time I saw Wilt back in the 60s (seems like another world!) I couldn't believe how huge he was. Sure, he was tall at over 7'2" but the width of Wilt was also something I'd never seen before. As I was staring at Wilt for the first time, he suddenly moved and I realized there was another player standing behind him that I never saw. 😮

Born and raised in New Jersey, my dad took us to a number of Harlem Globetrotter games the year they had this great "point guard" - what was his name, oh yeah, Wilt. I "followed" him into the NBA; and have been a "rabid" NBA-ABA fan ever since. Many years later I "met" him in San Diego at a pro basketball game; I walked up the stairs and he was sitting in the stands, almost as tall as me. But my favorite story about him was one almost nobody EVER talks about. Back then we read about it in the papers. When he was at Kansas U., the racism in the South (and across the US) was horrific. Wilt PERSONALLY "integrated" that State and the entire region by going to segregated establishments and sitting (sometimes with black teammates; but frequently alone) in the "whites only" section. This was nothing less than risking his life. The (large number of) people who CLAIM he was selfish don't know anything at all about him.

Its crazy that his prime was shortened by that unnecessary knee surgery he had in college...surgeons dont even do that surgery anymore for pro athletes or prospects. Dude worked hard to maintain that knee since his rookie year and he never injured that knee in the nba, but that surgery shortened his prime. A shame people talk about how his style of play shortened his career when it didnt. Also how can be people call wade so past his prime after lebron left when wade led the whole nba in clutch points in the playoffs in 2016 and took his team to game 7 with both bosh and whiteside injured.

Also, Wilt's regular-season scoring average was 30 points per game. Wilt's playoff average took a big dip to 22 points per game. That's the biggest dip in NBA history.

@Wilt Chamberlain is the GOAT Just to set the record straight a little: Wilt had talented teammates. Chet Walker, Lucius Jackson, Paul Arizin, Billy Cunningham, Gail Goodrich, Jerry West, Elgin Baylor, even underappreciated very skilled and athletic players like Happy Hairston. When Wilt played for the Warriors he played with a pretty talented Paul Arizin who was still a productive star but past his prime. That was about it, there were some other decent players but next to no depth on the bench and an anemic offense overall, he was putting up 50+ fg% on a metric ton of fg attempts when playing for the Warriors in order to stimulate an anemic offense. When he went to the Sixers he had Chet Walker, Billy Cunningham and Lucius Jackson. He also got to play with Alex Hannum the only HOF level coaching talent he ever experienced. Then he went to the Lakers and had Elgin Baylor, Jerry West, Gail Goodrich and Happy Hairston. By this time Wilt was older and experienced an injury that normally ended a player's career at the time (torn patella), which he recovered from and even returned to play in the postseason the same year. Bill Russell on the other hand had so much talent with him that there were some years the Celtics had not only 7-8 HOFers but 3 of the top 10 players in the league on one team. John Havlicek was and is one of the greatest forwards to every play basketball, he was a tremendous rebounder even as good as Bob Pettit some years, very skilled player on offense, a tenacious defender with just as much hustle as you could see in great Rodman clips, and his cardio was almost on Wilt's level. Havlicek was recorded having a resting heart rate of 60 bpm, the kind of cardiovascular excellence you'd expect from dominant olympic marathon runner. Wilt had good teams, in some years he had great teams. There were two years he had a historic level of a team, one year with the Sixers and another with the Lakers. Russell captained 7 of the top 30 defenses in nba history. Their defense was so good that with an offensive rating that was around league average they won 8 straight championships, and Russell enjoyed not only the presence of great shooters and passers and all around players, but he enjoyed the presence of one of the best rebounding forwards in nba history. Wilt had good help. Russell had epic help on a historic level.

I don't think there's such a thing as a goat and while it's fun to rank players people disparage awesome players way too much and spread too much ignorance in those discussions. They learn enough to be opinionated and that's about it. If you really love the game you can watch full game film of playoff games from every year, this year or a game in the 50s it doesn't matter, and if you're educated about the history and the people and their accomplishments, the rules and their playing conditions and how every year even up to now they are developing the game of basketball, you'll be excited practically on the edge of your seat watching the film. Basketball is basically our family religion, my grandfather has been an NCAA and NBA scout for 50 years, so I grew up going to games for free, am very blessed. Been to the Clippers, Lakers, Kings, and Jazz home court and seen every team in the nba that way since 96. Ranking is fun and all but when you really love the game you just discuss all the players and want to dispel ignorance about them no matter who it is. I'm guessing you're probably the same way and it's silly, they call us "old heads" but all we're doing is defending the players they marginalize and spread false information about. They do that to older players more so that's who we end up defending more. Doesn't mean we don't know just as much about younger players if not more than them, obviously.

The reason Wilt has never been in the GOAT convo is because of the era. If he wanted to, for sure he could score 40, maybe that 50 would have been 60-70. As per the records, if he wanted to he could shatter every records. He's that amazing. No other player was like him, maybe even now, his athleticism is ridiculous

I saw Wilt play in Cole Field House at the University of Maryland in 1973 - his last year in the league. Lakers against the Washington Bullets w/Wes Unseld. What I remember most about the game was in warmups Wilt was hitting long 3-point shots (before the 3-pointer existed) one after the other. Nothing he couldn't do.

The KEY here is each of his games is: Wilt did it all with no 3 point shot, as it was not in existence! When people compare Kobe, Jordan or any other of these recent high scorers we must take into consideration that they all have the advantage of the 3 point play and NONE ever hit 100 in a game and NONE can come closer to as many 30, 40, 50, 60, 70 point games as Wilt. And All These modern players had 20+ year careers. Wilt played approximately 13.5 Years then retired to play pro volleyball. The GOAT’s name is Wilton Norman Chamberlain!!

Yeah one of the worst ft shooters, shooting ft% 51.1 career decides to shoot 90% 28/32 and scored an exact 100 totally believable (sarcasm), the only evidence being him holding a piece of paper. He played the worst team in the league of literally 8 teams, against the Knicks and his matchup was a bench warmer since the starter was injured (had a flu). Not only that he played the entire game, the game back then had way more possessions as well. Also, there was no back to the basket rule, no post control, no goaltending, no zone defense, no double teaming, no hacking. So, how are you even trying to compare him to greater legends. In theory, you can squat in the post the entire game with a weak matchup, Shaq would've been way more dominant and could probably beat Wilt. Kobe's 81 or Harden's 60 point triple double is more impressive than that.

I feel so fortunate to have seen him in the last 4 years of his career. Being a Brooklyn boy, I was a huge Knicks fan back then, but always rooted for Chamberlain against them. That 71-72 finals was so wonderful.

Great video. I knew he was great, but now I realize how great he truly was. The 70's/80's was a time for plenty of defensive games under 100 points. Today is mostly run and shoot, plus the three point nonsense. There are exceptions of course, but mostly score, score, score. Even today, watching a truly defensive match remains a thing of beauty. Wilt the legend, good stuff.

BBall Griot Racism is despicable but are you really going to argue that blacks don’t have more athletic ability to be the dominant athletes in basically every sport that depends on running and jumping? There’s literally a movie called White Men Can’t Jump. It’s just a fact that they are naturally better athletes. I seen all I need to see after he Blocked Kareems Sky Hook while guarding him head up ,pls remember this he was past his Prime plus coming off a major knee Injury ,just imagine him in his Prime yrs playing against Kareem hmmmm !!!!

@@jlnxn5374 Note: Wilt didn't run the floor much. He was a big man and for most of career, his teammates fed him the ball and watched him score. Naturally, Wilt got tired and often WALKED down the floor on offense. When Wilt arrived, the offensive play would begin, but not until he arrived. On defense, many was the time he didn't get back down the court to make any kind of difference defensively. Just keepin' things real here, I saw him play, in-person and on TV.

I remember in the 1980's there was serious talk of teams willing to sign Wilt Champerlain to play for their team. I would have loved to see it happen.

Wilt was just bigger than life, literally. Mythical....Russell was the best team player ever, but Wilt had 4 or 5 Game 7 that could have went his way but didn't. The 2 Championships he won in '67 & '72 were absolutely great teams.

Thanks for this video. We get to see Wilt through the eyes of his contemporaries and "goat" contenders. I liked how they said forget the goat, he was the most dominant. They had to change the rules b/c of Wilt. Wilt doesn't get the recognition today mainly because most ppl weren't alive when he played to remember how great he was. I was introduced to basketball watching John Havlicek and the Celtics (B/W TV). I dreaded when Wilt played against them. He was so good, you almost felt like he was cheating in some way, but he was just that good.

Yes, in his early days offensive goal tending was legal. Wilt would stay under the basket and using his height and ill would guide errant shots. They changed that rule because of him. The lane was widen because of Wilt. He was the strongest and most athletic basketball player I have ever seen then and since. Some of his records will still be in place 100 years from now! Think about that!

He was a professional volleyball player and is in the volleyball hall of fame. In the 80’s he said he was in much better shape than he was when he retired from the nba. I wish SO much he would have returned in the 80’s, there was coaches trying to return in the 80’s.

The guy who kept stats for games says Wilt averaged 8.6 blocks a game. Russell was very good too. Wilt had games with 25 blocks. Don't care when you are playing. 25 blocks is silly. He blocked the sky hook when he was 35 well passed his prime. 10 times in 2 games. Tell me another center who blocked that shot more than once let alone 10 times at age 35 in 2 games. There's video of him getting it twice in like 3 seconds and that at age 35.

@@larrylindgren9484 no kidding I’ve seen that. He was a freak of nature. No one has come close to Wilt in my opinion. It’s been 60 some years, the guy still holds most records in the nba books. Many will never be broken. It’s a shame he doesn’t get his due credit. But , it’s cuz he only got 2 championships. Which really isn’t too fair. Can’t take anything away from Russell but he had 8 hall of famers to play with and arguably one of the best coaches ever. Red aurbeck.

Only been a few days & I'm back watching this again , lol. I just cannot get enuff of Wilton Norman Chamberlain! Ya know, Wilt Chamberlain was just BEYOND a legend. The word MYTHIC was used by Frank & i think that's a very apt word for Wilt. EVERY player coming into the NBA has goals set for themselves , even B4 He plays his 1st game. I think Barkley's goal was to score 20 PPG & avg 10+ boards.....He met those goals. However , so many more come in & they cant seem to get a handle on their game. What Wilt could do , was ....well....everything!!! (((Many peeps get on me cuz i say so many positive things about Wilt & at the end of this, I'm gonna list his biggest faults.))). Where was i , Oh YES, Wilt cood do it all , except shoot free-throws. Had an even lower FT % than SHAQ did!!....enough said! When Wilt was criticized for shooting too much in his rookie year , He Up'd his FG% from .461 to .509 & that 2nd year , he lead the NBA in FG% ,with that %. He then argue'd that "If a person is taking all these shots, he should be hitting the higher % ! He wont the shooting title 9 times out of his 14 years. By the 66-67 season he shot .683 & eventually got it up to .727 in his final season. I really wish Wilt stayed in the NBA until he was close to 50 or maybe a year or two past that , as he definitely had his body in great shape putting on a lot of muscle to play opposite Schwarzenegger in Conan , part 2. He was 48 years old & in the best shape of his life! So many great players, not only from His career days , but also after that in the 1980's , playing against people like Magic, Worthy..etc , say he was just amazing playing in those pick up games!! In his last season 72-73 , He lead the NBA in Rebounds (18.6) , FG% (.727), & he was still kicking ass. If a player is leading the NBA in such a pivotal category, ya shouldn't just quit , ya know? OK......WILT --> The BAD stuff....here we go..... **(( If your a Wilt-FAN , You'll be rewarded if you read to the end))** There is a big reason why Wilt didnt win so much & while it's true , he didn't have the teammates Russell did, there's another equally negative reason for it..... While Wilt pretended he didnt care what others thought of him , he did...VERY MUCH! Since his rookie season , He was labeled a gunner , ball-hog....on & on , so THIS is what he did...... During the regular season , Wilt would carry the team in a big way , but when a game was televised or in the play-off's , Wilt would NOT shoot as much for fear they would keep calling him that. So NOW , all of his teammates are way outta sinc & have no rhythm in their shooting becuz they havent shot all season long. SO they wouldn't win those games. If it was like NOW, where you can watch nearly every game , that wouldn't have worked. So , along with his massive ego & pride , it was his sensitivity to certain things that stopped him from winning. If he had just accepted that him "gunning" all the time...worked , & he shot the ball , like he usually wood, He would have won ..MUCH MORE! The EGO is a tricky thing & ya woodnt X-pect Wilt to be so sensitive , but...there ya go! When coaches started to tell him to pass the ball more, being Wilt, he took THAT to the X-treme too! Not enough to pass off, Wilt had to LEAD the NBA in...SOME-thing, lol. Thus , the only center to lead the NBA in total assists. He avg'd 8.6 APG , BUT that was NOT the highest per game, it was in TOTAL assists , which many people mix up. Oscar Robertson was the APG leader that season 67-68 with 9.7. It was still , however, VERY impressive! Another thing that didnt help WIlt much , was when Sharman asked Wilt to stop shooting & pass more often. Wilt , again being Wilt , took this very literal , cuz points was 1 of his strengths & he was pissed off , so he didn't shoot , when they NEEDED him to shoot. They would get down & Wilt just kept passing the ball & with him shooting a great FG% , he could've really helped his team out! Ive heard Wilt being called a "MAN-CHILD" & that too, is pretty apt & he would on occasion , throw a tantrum or 2 , lol. So , was Wilt perfect...Hell no!! Did he have the most potential of anyone else in the NBA , i still gotta say YES. MJ & a few others are up there too , but i think Wilt was in a category of his own. You gotta remember , Wilt was playing Pro-ball ,as a young teenager! Wilt took a different name , as not to get in trouble , & played established NBA players, at just 15-16 years old. "Wilt Chamberlain, or as he was first known, "George Marcus", secretly dominated professional basketball under that assumed identity at age 16 for the Pittsburgh Raiders. Even as a kid against 6-11 men his own size playing professionally (such as former Harlem Globetrotters!) he averaged 53.9ppg by age 17!! " Not too shabby , eh? People talk about Wilt's 50.4 PPG season & rightfully so, but the very next yea, He averaged 44.8 PPG AND 24.3 rebounds to boot. I've always loved the line by Darrall Imhoff ( i think) , which states.... "Michael Jordan scored over 50 points in his career....Impressive! Wilt.... did it 45 times in a single season"...heh heh. BTW, did you know, if they never changed the rules about Wilt dunking from the foul-line , & he made all his FT's.... He would STILL be the all time leader scorer of all time, lol. Kareem has 38,387 points. Wilt would have had 43,281 points... OR, to be fair , If Wilt could only do it until his knee surgery that is 1,648 less, He'd still have 1,000's of more points than KAJ. Had the ONLY quintuple-double (unofficially) in NBA history & wait until you see THESE numbers....ready????? Ok , here we go......Wilt Chamberlain Had The Only Quintuple-Double With 53 Points, 32 Rebounds, 14 Assists, 24 Blocks, And 11 Steals ROTFLMAO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! MICHAEL WHO???? SUMMERY........ MJ is thought of as the best , 1 of the reasons being his had the highest PPG average. & with Wilt, here is a guy who also avg'd 30.1 ppg , small fraction lower than MJ , BUT Wilt was also the best rebounder the NBA has ever seen! So , Wilt , along with being a top scorer in his career but best rebounder ever...How much more does he have to do , to be labeled , once & for all, The GOAT!?? Wilt 9 shooting titles, 11 rebounding titles , only center to have the most total assists for the entire season , 9-times leader in minutes played , & 1 time, avg'd more minutes than there are in a full game ....I mean C'MON !! OK , i gotta stop listing his accomplishments or we'd be here for ever! NEARLY best scorer AND THE best rebounder... Survey says------DING-DING-DING!!! Seriously , if you made it thru this , thanks very much! I've been holding in all that negativity about him for ever , lol. Wilt ..... I honestly think , that most people who'v seen a few video's about him , & most of those are his last season, just cant understand HOW DOMINANT he truly was!!! He wasn't the tallest in his playing days even in his early years , which i think MANY believe. @@elvispresley5921 no he wasnt just a guy who could run faster than most jump higher than most etc...he was the only guy who was 7ft tall and could also run faster than most jump higher than most etc...furthermore, the era he played during produced4-5 or more players who averaged as many and/or even substantially more RPG than D.Rodman in his prime managed to, and a closer look at FG%s of shooters leaguewide during that era compared to others as well as a few other stats shows those numbers are a result of the fact that the game was still in its early evolution, players were hitting lower FG%s leaguewide...Look at Cousys FG% for example-NEVER managed to hit even 40% of his FGs for an entire season...Elgin Baylor hit 43%of his FGs...Jerry West the player many would likely suggest as the best pure shooter of that era only hit 47% from the floor for his career...The 1964 Celtics as a team didnt have a single player who hit as high as even 46% from the floor and collectively while winning the their 6th championship in a row hit only 41% from the field during that 1964 reg season...BTW, Wilt not only had the advantage of being the only 7fter with modern day or 1980s-1990s big man athleticism, he was playing during an era where the overwhelming majority of guards and swingmen also werent the kind of athletic specimens at least half of em playing by the 80s and 90s were-unable to play above the rim esp on defense when helping out to dbl or triple team him.

I loved watching the titanic battles between Wilt and the 76ers vs. Russell and the Celtics on Sundays on ABC TV. Wilt and the Big O were my favorite players back then. I thought then and I still think that Wilt is the GOAT.

If Jordan had been able to try playing his inside game against Chamberlain in the paint, he'd end up flat on his back every play. Until he was carried off to the hospital that is. 😆
