I've never read/heard it before, and it was a pleasant surprise to see Carnacki in something more like a detective story than his usual paranormal or faked paranormal encounters. This collection has kept me entertained for the better part of a week now, it's one of your best, and Carnacki reminds me of your own character Van Melsen, or should it be the other way around? Thousands of years of bloodshed and carnage throughout the British Empire had finally been quieted by the dawn of the 20th century, and condensed in literature by Dickens, and later by Henry James into scary but harmless Edwarian ghost stories. Then WW1 came roaring in, and the real bloodshed and carnage said "Step aside, puny stories. We're back!!" That said, this site is awesome. I love these ghost stories!

i have NO idea why, but i listen to Carnacki stories every couple of months or so. the way you read them? maybe - sort of light and yet dramatic. :) thanks much. 🌛🌜 the only other stories like that are the Agatha Christie “Quinn” stories, but you don’t read those, right? they are sort of magical. 🪄 ✨

Christie's works aren't in the public domain. We'd love to record some eventually though.

Had to stop at @01:04:32, sorry - to keep it spoiler free, I'll just say that I couldn't finish watching the Babadook for the same reason... I'll come back later into the story... :(

@HorrorBabble O and what about John Carpenter's The Thing???! I literally ran out of the theater when I saw the dog scene

**** Spoiler!!!! second story - the killing of the dogs was horrendous. i don’t even understand how someone could even think of that. every other story is fun scary. i also don’t understand the wanton killing of pets. even back then, people loved their pets. i think there’s only one story where Carnaki’s own pets live, even though they were scared. i really don’t get the gruesomeness of this one!!! what! to show there are very bad people? and they weren’t even arrested!!!

I am almost through with story number two and an animal is killed in this one as well. A dog this time and he’s killed very very descriptively.

Oh no, not the cat. How mean to take the poor thing there and lock it up so it can't run away. If you want to place yourself in danger, that is your business, but it's very wrong to force your fancy upon a poor innocent cat.
