I came across asterix mansion of the gods cartoon recently. I was apprehensive since I had read the comics first. maybe you can talk about any animated versions of comics and your general impressions?

Some kind of edition comparison video would probably be appropriate for a classic series like this? To help other readers with their purchase decisions? Obviously it would be silly to compare every edition of every single story in the series, but a more "general vintage" comparison of one album here and and another album there. Altough I admit that the re-coloring and re-lettering of this latest round of reprints is reasonably subtle, I myself was not a big fan and went to the trouble of collecting softcovers from the 70’s. While their glued binding can be weak, the richer original colors on thick matte paper make up for it. I wonder if this holds in the English language editions as well?

@@arvindramanathan3105 Ah, interesting! I generally don't talk about any other medium other than comics on this channel. This is not because I don't enjoy film and animation and video games etc, but I think they get a lot of coverage already, whereas comics still get talked about often as the 'source' for movies/TV more often than not. It's also a very slippery slope and once I do it for one thing, there's no reason not to do it for another etc. I know it sounds a bit precious and stiff, but I really wanted to make a corner of specifically celebrating the pleasure of reading comics, if that makes sense!

@@vellu5000 That's a great suggestion! I just wonder if my personal 'vintage books' would present a proper base of comparison, being as weathered and therefore altered as they are. And if they are hard to find, I may not do folks much service. But I would love to see what discrepancies or differences in the reading are wrought and perhaps explore that in a more discussion- oriented video. Thanks so much for the idea!

Rene Goscinny did not just only write the best volumes of Asterix. His volumes of Lucky Luke are the best of that series as well. In fact, if you like Asterix, there's a good chance you will like Lucky Luke.

I've definitely enjoyed the Lucky Luke I've read (around 20-25 of the adventures) and you're absolutely right, I've loved the Goscinny ones of those by far the most! I really should look into finding more Lucky Luke...😁

One thing worth mentioning about the English translations by Anthea Bell and Derek Hockridge is Goscinny was of the opinion they actually improved the writing especially with regards to many of the jokes. High praise indeed!

I just wrote elsewhere in these comments that the English translations by Bell and Hockridge are some of the best translations I have ever read in any form. And I say this purely on the basis of the English, not having read (or being able to read) the original French. So to hear you say this just doubles my already significant admiration!

I grew up reading them primarily in English (UK) but lived in Spain, so also had "La Residencia de los Dioses" - and with a French mother, occasionally had triplicates - in this case, also "Le Domaine de Dieux". English is and always was my primary language but both French and Spanish are tied for strong second. I always thought the English captions captured more of the nuances of the original French while adding a zest and wry wit that I sometimes missed in the original! - When it came to reading it in Spanish, for some reason I just treated it like any other Spanish comic (e.g., Tip y Col, etc) and don't remember the impression.

I know families in europe where comics were banned for their children, but of course they had Asterix. It was widely known as "the good comic".

As a German, my father was never a fan of comics as an adult. He didn't ban them but he never encouraged me. But He was a fan von Asterix, therefore I knew Asterix from the early 70s on and my father did buy every issue till his death.

I had a friend with parents like that except he was only allowed to read Tintin comics, every other comics was deemed too dumb and banned (including Asterix).

Oh yes, I know it is HUGE! ANd I can completely see why - even all the way here in India, Asterix was the equal to Tintin, Mickey Mouse, Superman and Spider-Man for us growing up!

As a kid in England in the late 70s and 80s these were my prized treasures. I read and reread them must of been thousands of times…..I’m 46 now and still have them.

How lovely! Only two volumes of my 80s Dargaud books remain. The rest have either fallen apart through rereading and moving, or were never returned by fickle friends. I'd love to have those original editions of mine, but these are a decent substitute 😁

Asterix was at the absolute apex of the Francophone comics. I am Portuguese but I grew up with these and still to this day they are part of my life and became a source of shared experiences with family and friends. Goscinny was an absolute genious and brough to us, together with Uderzo, these exceptional stories. The newer stories, although slowly increasing in quality ("The Daughter of Vercingetorix" is quite good), never quite matched the creativity of Goscinny. He also created other exceptional characters/stories that were also part of my life: Iznogoud, Humpá-pá, many books of Lucky Luke,... Merci Mounsieur Goscinny.

My favourite comics of all time! I was collecting them since kindergarten and I couldn't wait to go to primary school and learn how to read, in order to read them all! And so I did and I was re-reading them every year and every time I got something new out of them, as I was growing up.

Wonderful film. I am in my late 40's and I love Asterix. I have been a fan since I was a child around 8 or 9 years old. I still have all my books big and small including the fantastic story of how Obelix fell into the magic potion as a little boy. I also have the box set dvd films. Thank you for covering these books I would love to get them myself.

I looked at the new US hardcover editions from Papercutz in another video and they are not as good, in my opinion. Good luck on adding to your already wonderful collection!

My Dad took me to Parc Asterix in France when it opened in -89. I was eight years old and so happy. He died this summer and I will always be grateful for him buying me the comics and the cartoons when I was little boy. He loved Asterix too.

Hello from Greece, this is yet another great video about my favorite subject, comic books. I'm used to the quality of your videos by now but I can't help being pleasantly surprised each and every time I stumble upon one of your wonderfully made audiovisual treats. The Asterix comics in Greece are super popular since the late sixties, they even reach the same level of Disney publications popularity-wise which is a sort of royalty where I come from. I believe that every Asterix fan loves the Goscinny-written stories, myself included, his early passing was quite a loss for the ninth art community. Uderzo's artwork is simply beyond words in my humble opinion, his drawing hand was touched by Toutatis himself, I can't think of another logical explanation of this mesmerizing eye-candy. We have been through several Asterix publications throughout the years with various results in quality including translation. We have Asterix albums in hardcover now just like in France, there are translations in Ancient Greek and in a few Greek dialects, even in Latin..

I'm so happy to finally see this Asterix video! I think Asterix is the first long-form comic I ever read having picked them up as a child in order to try to learn my French better (didn't help that much, but I went on to read quite a few in English and loved them). Since then, I had kind of forgotten about this series but recently rediscovered it last year. I'm lucky that my library has about half of these omnibus collections. I've only read the first one so far, but it was so charming and wonderful and just an absolute delight! I cannot wait to read more of these stories and I would definitely want to add them to my own collection down the line. Wonderful overview! I'm so glad you covered these books! They really hold up so well as an adult reader - the puns and humour, the bouncy energetic cartooning, and the charm. Such an infectious good time!

You're absolutely right in every single thing you've noted! Infectious and lighthearted, but there's also just enough meat and substance to satisfy an adult reader. The world that Goscinny and Uderzo created was unlike any other I've encountered, even till today. There were always consequences and stakes, but at the same time the adventures felt light and carefree. The observations on humans were gentle ribbing, and spoke of a universal human nature that I admire even more today!

Their kind of comics usually have those types of panelling grid system and the beautiful warm colors with heavy black ink really alludes the magical fantastic adventures rooted down in me. Do more comics that was of youth substances!

I didn't know that they had printed omnibus collections of Asterix. My mom got me a few of the Asterix books when I was a kid. Asterix The Gaul, Asterix and Cleopatra, and Asterix The Legionary. When I got into comic books big time, I saw a review of Asterix in the Comics Journal, but it took some time before I started getting the rest of the Asterix books. As an adult, it still amazes me how well the English translators came up with the jokes and puns *in English* that worked so well in the stories.

What a coincedence! I literally completed my own Asterix collection yesterday when I got an excellent vintage hardback copy (published by Hodder and Stoughton) of The Twelve Tasks of Asterix from eBay in the post and now I'm finally done. For me the ONLY edtions that count are these old hardback versions for two reasons. The first is unquestionably nostalgia. The very first Asterix book I read was my late uncle's 1st edition hardback of Asterix in Britain (which I now own of course). I grew up with these hardbacks reading the copies from the public library multiple times as well as borrowing them (again multiple times) from an army guy who lived next door to my parents when I was about 7 years old. That guy had them all (in hardback form naturally) but would only let me borrow them one at a time so I was always knocking on his door! The second reason these old hardbacks are the only way is the use of the different font in the modern versions which I really can't abide at all. So I now have "vintage" copies of all the books in hardback form Asterix the Gaul to Asterix and the Black Gold. That's me done. Like you I think the series went downhill somewhat after Goscinney's death although I rate Asterix and the Great Divide as the best post Goscinney book, it's pretty good I think, rather well observed. I didn't care for Asterix and Son at all when it came out but obviously I was a lot older by then. When I read Asterix and the Falling Sky I remember being almost angry as it was just plain bad and broke the believability of the world of Asterix with the ludicrous aliens. I think the series was pretty much out of ideas at that point so I've never bothered with any of the other latter books. (Actually that's not quite true. I read Asterix and the Missing Scroll recently when a second hand paperback copy came into the comic shop where I work. It was okay, but rather flat). In terms of the actual books I like, I have to say that Asterix and the Secret Agent is my personal favourite and would probably make it into my top ten comic books of all time. It's a brilliant study of the dangers and destructive potential of gossip and rumour (and the cult of personality to some extent). All perennial subjects presented in a sophisticated, satirical and very funny way with one of the all term great Astrix characters, said agent. Regarding the use of stereotypes (both racial and national) in the books, I've never found anything offensive at all. The humour is really very gentle and affectionate regarding all its subjects I think. Leg-pulling and teasing is about as harsh as it gets and I'm pretty sure the creators intentions were completely honourable. That said, who am I to comment on the representations of other nationalities and races in the world of entertainment? Changing the subject slightly, I'm currently buying all the Lucky Luke books published here in the UK by Cinebooks in PB form. Most of them are written by Goscinney and they are a joy too. I've only bought a few various editions written by Morris only and by other writers and I have to say they were decent enough with plenty of good ideas but they do have a rather different "feel" to them which I guess is to be expected. As regards Tintin, I did plan to buy all the old hardback Methuen books of my childhood but they are £££s so I'm getting the new hardbacks one by one. The font in the new editions is also different to the one in the books I used to read as a kid but I did read somewhere or other that the new font is closer to the one used in the original French language versions. Anyway, thanks for another great video and I look forward to the next.

As happens so often when I hear you talk comics, I am incredibly jealous. That hardcover collection you describe would absolutely be the way I would dream of collecting this wonderful series. There's almost too much 'marketing' that can happen trying to get new readers hooked on to this classic series, and I would love the look and feel of the original packaging instead. With Tintin, the missing Hyslop lettering is definitely a bitter pill to swallow for readers of the classic editions, the new fonts fidelity to the original French notwithstanding. It is still a computer font and the absolute lack of variation, married to the relative thinness and italic-like slant, rob the text of its charm. I did not face such an issue with the Asterix albums, but now that you have pointed this out, I must run and check against my childhood copies. Are there menhir more original hardcovers our there in the wild, do you know?

@@ftloc Yes ideally I'd love to have all the 1970s Methuen hardback versions of Tintin rather than the new ones. I am not a fan of computer generated text in speech balloons either. I find it too sterile and rather fake. That said there's no way I'm going to try to get the old hardback Tintin books as they are just too expensive and I need too many. I just sold my smaller sized Tintin boxset (the blue one) as I just couldn't get on with the smaller format at all. It was a purchase mistake but not an expensive one as I sold it for what I paid for it luckily. Tintin books are best enjoyed album size whether paperback or hardback, a point you made in one of your Tintin videos I recall. Like I said, I'm slowly buying the Lucky Luke books in paperback album size and I have about 25 of the 78 available so far. I'm trying to limit myself to buying one per month just so I can pretend I possess a modicum of self-discipline when it comes to comic buying. After that it'll be Tintin as I have three old (and very battered) Methuen editions from childhood and four new editions. You'll have to forgive me Angshuman as I didn't understand your question at the end of your comment.

Great video evoking so many fun childhood memories. You should give more credit to the English translations by Anthea Bell and Derek Hockridge. The translated jokes resonated so well even though I get the idea that the original French versions probably were intended more for French native speakers. Compare this to the English translations of Tintin by Cooper and Turner which are the most well known ones. Tintin in English sounds very simplistic and the jokes dont land with the same efficacy as they did when I was younger. Contrast this to the Bengali translations of the Tintin adventures which have personally still retained the charm. The English Asterix editions however continue to entertain me quite a lot by Toutatis!

In these comments, though, you can see the celebration of their work by not just me but so many others as well! 😁 I think I'll make a future video in which I may get to talk about the translation a bit more, stay tuned!

I don't know why this video popped up in my feed but it was good. I am always surprised to see how popular astérix can be outside of France. The puns in the original comics are not easily translated but I guess they got good translators. As a fan myself i also bought the books again to replace my old childhood albums and ended up getting buying a leather bound edition ; a classic like Astérix deserves this !

great run through... I think Goths, although early, is fabulous... You are spot on about Goscinny being the difference between "OK" and "Fabulous" in terms of the comedy. It is the same with Lucky Luke and Iznogoud for my money... where there is Goscinny there is hilarious mayhem. Love him.

The quality of most of the Goscinnny - Uderzo Asterix books are so high and so consistent that picking favourites is always a matter of the smallest of edges being given or taken, and a truly challenging task. Doesn't stop me from attempting it though! Cheers!

Brilliant video. I was looking forward to this one. Yes Asterix the Legionary is probably my favourite. I really enjoy the format of your videos where you collect a specific set of editions. I'm always a bit annoyed when a new cover design is introduced and the collection no longer matches. Probably this will happen with this Omnibus series as there is already a new format.

It is nice to be able to get a series together, which is why one needs to both do some research and act fast! 😁 Re: the new format, if you mean the Papercutz editions, those are American editions with a new translation. I think Hachette will keep publishing these classic translations too, so they're not replacing these (at least from what I know) .

@@ftloc Like you said, not as good as the originals. “The falling sky” was the worst in my opinion. I think Uderzo retired after that one. But I do like his older solo titles like “Black gold”, “Asterix n Son” and yes “The magic carpet”😬 You should watch the recently released animated movie “ Secret of the magic portion”. I think it perfectly captured the charm n wit of the original comics while adding a bit of today’s sensibilities to the plot (with regards to the little girl). Keep up the good work!

By Toutatis, this was a very interesting look at one of my all-time favourite series...I spent many happy hours reading Asterix as a kid, both in English and in my native tongue, namely Welsh, and it still holds up to this day, yes? Some of my favourites were Asterix and the Goths (loved that little spoof history of the Gothic civil war which is just a succession of Gothic chiefs hitting each other over the head with spiked clubs), Asterix the Legionary (especially the depiction of Obelix's doomed love for Panacea), Asterix the Gladiator, Asterix and Cleopatra, Asterix and the Magic Carpet and of course Asterix in Britain (which also made for a wonderful cartoon to boot)...mind you, with the exception of the first volume, Asterix the Gaul, which as you mentioned suffered a bit from the fact that the creators were still finding their feet artistically (a bit like the First Season of The Simpsons), the overall standard was consistently high for the vast majority of these delightful stories, yes? As far as favourite characters go, being a bit on the heavyset side, I tended to identify with Obelix, Roman helmet collection and all...as well as feeling a bit sorry for Cacofonix to boot...I mean, surely his singing can't be THAT bad, yes?!

I've only ever read Asterix in English and it's a testament to the quality of the writing and the translation that the jokes still do indeed hold up. The art, of course, has always been lovely. And I completely agree with you on Cacofonix - those Gauls are being quite mean and essentially depriving him of his livelihood! (But what a wonderful treehouse he has!)

Here in Québec, that French-Speaking Canadian Province (State if you prefer), we have all of them used that date from my father and some of his brother's childhood. In French, the first books of the series had weird ugly colors and were published by Dargaud and had a font that changed and wasn't much consistent. Later now the first half of the books, when Gosciny was alive is published in French by Hachette, was recolored by computer mostly by Cerise and rewritten still by hand consistently. The other half of the books in French (after the death of Goscinny) are published by Albert René editions. A fun fact I know is that the English books were rewritten by the same person who rewrote the French BDs too accordingly. Those Omnibus English books look very interesting and I would like to know the BDs in English, and see how the multitude of riddles and puns were translated.

I've seen some of those oddly coloured ones, I believe. I wasn't aware of how many variations there have been to the colours over the year. I really do like the Hachette omnibuses. Even though they are not hardcover, they tick pretty much every other box for me. They even helped me overcome my bias against 'three-in-one' editions, haha. So glad you liked the video!

Great video! Growing up in India in the 80s it was difficult to have a complete collection of either Tintin or Asterix (even the paperbacks), especially after the Rupee devaluation of the late 80s. I finally ‘completed’ my Asterix collection in 2018: Full sized, individual hardback volumes [Vols 1 - 37] from Orion publication. Together they weigh a ton, to the extent that the Ikea shelf bends down if put together.

Aahhh Asterix, I learned to read through these and Tintin - such lovable childhood memories. The whole set of Asterix stories is being launched I’m my country, as we speak, for several months. These special remastered editions include extra materials and contextual texts specially written for it, all in hardcover. As far as I know there are no equivalent English edition so, If you read French you might try the original editions...

@@ftlocAsterix really deserved better attention by English language publishers. I know it is a French inspired character and the multi level reading experience points out to specific local sociological and personality traits but, as a whole, it caters to a universal audience. Speaking of Asterix another gaule should earn you attention - I’m talking of Alix by Jaques Martin and since your are in “french” territory why not include Spirou & Fantasio, Gaston, Iznogoud, and many others... Cheers

Asterix is huge and has never been out of print in English so I really don't understand the lack of great deluxe editions (although most of the paperback editions are pretty high quality too) I have a bunch of Izhnogouds and Lucky Lukes and have had for many years. On the other hand I just got my first Spirou book a few months ago! 😁

I loved the puns in the names as a kid. Getafix was the druid, and he was where you got your "fix", old parlance for drugs. Obelix is self-explanatory, but Asterix actually means "star", which is what he literally is. Cool.

You make me want to try an English translation of Astérix. This is all my childhood, especially since I was born in that part of France. I thought it gave me a special connection to The stories. 🤷🏻‍♀️

In my life I have read a fair number of translations and I rank the original Asterix stories' English translations as some of the best of any kind, ever! I am sure the original French will always be the best way to read them, but the English volumes were 9and continue to be) pure joy.

@@anneceferron4595 They're definitely some of the funniest things in there. I believe (but am not sure) that they're not so much 'translations' as they are completely new names, and to this day they make me giggle out loud, be they Valueaddedtax or Poisonusfungus! 😁

The other one I don’t understand, cause... not my language... not related but my 3 favorite Astérix are zizanie, « le grand fossé » and « les 12 travaux d’astérix »which is a mix between hercule and Astérix trying to find informations in an administratif building... but I think it is an adaptation from a movie.... not sure I remember properly... 3 decades ago

Of course the idea is a great one! Greetings right back at you from India!

It really surprises me that Asterix is wordly famous considering that so many of the jokes are centered around french culture and history as well as complex word plays that I can't see being faithfully translated.

It's really universal! Like so much of art, it contains a universality outside of its specifics, allowing readers from all contexts to enjoy stories at the core about pride, freedom, silliness, competition, pettiness, and friendship. Great stuff!

Great video as usual. What I really enjoyed when reading Astérix is the names of the characters which are their personality/ special trait or a popular catchphrase. Moreover being able to read french I was always amused by their translation into english which had sometimes a completely different meaning. Example the druid Getafix is name Panoramix in french or Dogmatix named Idefix ( fixed idea). Please give a try to Thorgal.

Thank you! The names are just hilarious; even as an adult, I find myself snorting aloud with laughter at encountering most of them! I've read the first Volume of Thorgal, on the lookout now for the next volumes!

I missed Asterix comics growing up. For me, Calvin & Hobbes was the seminal duo for my early comic reading. Like you said, Asterix wasn't a major character in the US, so that may have had a major influence on my inability to find it (or know it existed). I might find a volume at the local book shop and give it a whirl. Do you feel that these stories hold up as you've matured and increased your exposure to more complex comics? I like that you've pointed out how this series makes fun of all people from all cultures. It's not specifically grilling one group, which shows some of the awareness and intelligence the writer had in their comedy. Unlike the Looney Tunes, which has had certain episodes removed from mainstream accessibility for some controversial portrayals of different cultural groups. Keep up the great work!

Thank you! And that's a great question about if it 'holds up', a question for all childhood and 'early' reading. I'd say the original adventures definitely do, for me, but I may be too close. These stories were the first to introduce so many words, concepts, and facts to me that I wonder if it can be truly 'objectively' scrutinized by me. But yes, I don't feel most of the caricatures come across as mean or racist, although a couple (especially the depiction of black people) definitely make me squirm. But on the whole the stories are clever, open hearted, and gleeful, and that I think is unmistakable even today, for me at least. I think Asterix comics are more easily available in the US these days, although various libraries may have different rules. I'd recomend you take a look at my edition comparison video before you try one of the US/Papercutz editions though: kzread.info/dash/bejne/qZ2kqZuOYt3Hf9Y.html

Credit must be also be given to Derek Hockridge and Anthea Bell that provided the excellent English translations. They have done an outstanding job of retaining the humour and adding a touch of English humour and idiosyncrasies to it, that make up so much of the literary gags. Haven't read the Hindi or Bengali translations, but am curious to see how the original humour was maintained therein. It is also interesting to see Uderzo's art evolve over the course of the first 12 or so albums. You could spend hours poring over the art and still be struck dumb by the breadth of Uderzo's talent, which includes not just caricaturing , but also in anatomy, architecture, perspective, colour theory and colour perspective. For me, the peak of this series was right before Goscinny passed away (pre 1977). All in all, definitely an enriching collection.

I completely agree! These translations made me wonder about the original French and how the jokes there could be the same if the words were different, probably the same thing French readers thought about English and other translations! I hear the new American editions have a new translation and I am both curious and afraid to check them out...

I haven't read many of its comics but i loved asterix the legionary

I am a huge fan of Asterix. However, I was pretty peeved when the publishers decided not to publish ASTERIX : SECRET OF MAGIC POTION (2018) and ASTERIX: THE GOLDEN MENHIR in English. My repeated requests had fell on deaf ears and so along with a friend of mine- Vishnu Kanth- we decided to translate SECRET OF MAGIC POTION to English. Finally we achieved success on X'mas day 2020- and we have submitted the translation to the official Asterix publishers seeking to publish the same in English. Likewise I have also requested Asterix publishers to translate and publish in English 3 other series- JEHAN PISTOLET, LUC JUNIOR and BENJAMIN et BENJAMINE- three comic book series created by Goscinny and Uderzo which have had no English avatar so far. Oh interesting! Yes, the Uderzo-only ones did slide pretty badly after Great Divide (which, as someone else said in these comments, is the best of the bunch). The new ones seem to have mixed feedback but I wonder if that is our nostalgia interfering. Nothing can equal childhood memories, after all, but I wonder what kids today will think of all of them!

Lovely! It's become somewhat of a tradition for me to go window shopping after your videos, and upon doing so this time I found that there seems to be a new range of Asterix Omnibuses being release since 2020 in hardcover format by Papercuts. Did you know about these and have you checked them out? Also I wonder if these stories would be enjoyable without as much of a nostalgic throwback as you have (I also read some of Asterix and saw the movies as a kid, but I don't remember much)? Seeing as how Asterix is one of the main pillars of european comics I wouldn't shy away from checking it out again though.

If you do check them back out, I'd recommend starting with the fourth adventure for best balance in evaluation. I did find the core series to hold up quite well, but even in the video I acknowledge the possibility of nostalgia-tinted glasses. Perhaps I should do a deeper dive into some stories to test this. And yes, only last week did I discover the Papercutz editions. They're thrice the price of the paperbacks over here though, so that's quite a deterrent for me 're-collecting' the whole series. Still, I may get just one to check out the design and production on them, perhaps the volume that is damaged in paperback? Then I would have to hope that I am not charmed by it! 🙄

I understand the Papercutz editions are in a new translation for the US market, so any more dated or UKcentric references from the older translation won't have made it through and the pun names have been reworked. I haven't seen them side by side so not sure just how different they are.

I just read up on those new translations a bit and now I am quite curious! One one hand I love the original translations to the point of reverence, on the other the new approach *sounds* logical and seems in good hands. Maybe a side by side comparison is coming on this very channel!

The Falling Sky is the last one Uderzo wrote, the new team took over after that, I think it might be worth checking out. I've enjoyed the last few ones, even if they're not back to the height of the Gosciny era.

@@ftloc I think the one about Vecingertorix' daughter is great fun. Reminds me of Asterix and the Normands a bit because of the young character at the center of the story. It's also poking fun at the whole pride and ego of the previous generation.

Hi, I had one question. Does every story have its cover in these omnibus? As for some I could only see the second page (the title and the Asterix face rather than the cover). Can anyone please clarify this?

Good question, and no, all the covers are not included. For me, that's not that big a deal because, as I mention in this video, I don't love them the way I do say the Tintin covers. The perspective and relative sizes of the characters to the backgrounds etc has never gripped me the way the interior art does, so for me it's not that big a loss. However, for people who love and want each cover, the individual volumes may still be the way to go! Hope that helps!

Actually I don't want to buy the whole set as I am only looking for the Uderzo-Goscinny combo books ( Although I agree the covers are not as attractive as Tintin, but still I would like to have those. ) and as I have around 6 Asterix books already, I may just pick a around 4-5 omnibus books to complete my collection. But these prices are HUGE!

I was waiting for this video for long time as I requested you once to make a video on Asterix. This is very satisfying with lot of info that any Asterix fan want to know. Following your footsteps I've started to collect this all editions one by one when the prices are low. There are three in my bookshelves till now, nine more to buy! I really enjoyed this video.

I actually liked "The Great Divide" even though Goscinny didn't write it, but I appreciate it even more as an adult, since it is really about politics and even French politics. A Gaul village is split in two by a great trench, because after the death of their chieftain, the two candidates could not gain a clear advantage over the other. Therefore, they dug a big trench in the middle of town, and there are two gates, and two chieftains. Tournedix is the chieftain of the left side of the village, while Segregationix is chieftain of the right side (he is depicted in a Louis XIV pose and looks a bit like Charles de Gaulle). But Comix, the son of the leftist chieftain, is in love with Fanzine, the right side chieftain's daughter (yes it's a Romeo and Juliet story). He overhears Acidenitrix, Segregationix evil advisor, ploting to get the Romans' help against the other side. Tournedix then sends his son in Armorica, where a good friend with whom he has fought in Gergovia is the chieftain of a village which still holds out against the invaders... "Asterix and the Black Gold" I also found hilarious. I'm surprised to see it has not been written by Goscinny. Julius Caesar sends a "gallo-roman druid spy" to infiltrate the village, Dubbelosix (a caricature of Sean Connery). He learns that the druid Getafix has run out of precious "rock oil", petra oleum, an important ingredient for the magic potion. He send Asterix and Obelix in Mesopotamia to get some. Dubbelosix will try everything to sabotage their mission. They make an interesting halt in Jerusalem where they sleep in a certain stable under a starry sky... A caustic depiction of the situation in the Near East, as well as a nice spy movie spoof.

Thanks for the great comment! I do have a soft spot for The Great Divide myself because I like the way the split is done. But I found the central characters in the romance a bit bland (reminded me a bit of the couple in Legionary but with larger roles) and the rift, being around new characters, seemed to come out of nowhere in a place I thought I knew as a reader. A bit jarring but perhaps I should go back and see what I think now. The story also shares some similarities with Peyo's Smurf Vs Smurf, both in plot points (a divide running through the village) and real-life inspiration (in the case of the Smurfs story, about tensions between French and Flemish speaking groups in Belgium, I think?). But the Smurfs story feels a bit more organic as well as better metatextual fun, and I think having read that before Great Divide also may have robbed the Asterix adventure of its freshness a bit in my eyes. Still, I think Great Divide would probably be the highest ranked, for me, of the non Goscinny stories that I have read. Cheers!

Although I've covered both _The Incal_ and _The World of Edena_ in different videos, _Blueberry_ (like a lot of Moebius) is simply not available to me. I wish there were some editions easier to find/ cheaper to buy than the classic editions long out of print. I have no doubt they are wonderful, but given my inability to read digitally, the absence of physical copies in my hand keeps me from making videos on many books! 😥

Yes, I've noted that in Canada, comics reading is as close to European comics as those from the United States, maybe even more. Is it mainly in the French speaking regions or all over, would you say?

@@ftloc all over. I grew up in Alberta. The libraries had both english and french versions but the french looked new and the english were heavily used. If I find an Asterix original in a thrift shop now - it will always been french. The english originals I simply never find now.

You have only covered up till book 33 (Falling Sky) but book 34 (released in 2009)celebrates the Comic heroes’ 50th birthday,later books were written by Jean Yves Ferri and illustrated by Didier Conrad..you haven’t checked those out?

Yes, I haven't gone further because I found my enthusiasm waning, especially after Falling Sky! I did want to focus in this video on the team of Goscinny and Uderzo and they books they did together, which is why I titled the video that way! 😁 I'll check out some of the later books because a number of people have now told me that although not at the same level as the 'original' stories, they're not as bad as the ones I am probably reacting to!

I have (my parents, rather) have the small format singles. Pretty much the entire collection. We're missing Asterix and Son and it costs like 50$ to ship the small version from abroad, so I'm holding off on the purchase.

Ah, interesting - which small format singles are these (would you know the publisher or have an ISBN to share)? So far I have run across a couple of small-format 3-in-1s, both old and new. Are the ones you refer to hardcover or paperback? Also, 50 dollars seems an exorbitant price, especially when we can get Asterix and Son at full size for less than Rs 300 here right now, but I understand the allure of completing a set in one format, of course! At least you can say that you have all the Goscinny-Uderzo collaborations already! 😁

Oh yes, 'beloved' is almost an understatement when it comes to describing this series, and I am thrilled that the reactions and comments here support that! No matter what one thinks of a work itself, it is always heartwarming to see such love and passion for art and stories!

Please tell us more about the background and life and death of the creators and how they cooked up the stories (how did they decide to write about Corsica, as a random example?)

@@sagniknath5537 they were from Sicily IIRC? I’m wondering how they selected their stories and locations because it doesn’t seem like they did it at random?

Another reading staple of my youth. Haven't collected them as I have Tintin, even though you could buy them two for one in my local bookstore from time to time. Don't know if kids are into reading them these days?

@@ftloc Funny you should say that because I bought my two nephews a couple of Tintin and Asterix books last Christmas.

The Rome cityscape is gorgeous, and wargamers use the colour palate of the Roman soldiers clothing and shields as a painting guide.

I set out to collect replacements for some of my tattered Asterix books last year, but was saddened to see that the fonts used by Orion, and more recently Hachette, have taken a drastic drop from what the lettering used to be. On the Tintin side, I've seen a lot of people complain about the new digitised lettering, but in all honesty that looks very much okay to me compared to the Asterix font-change, which now seems almost a physical eye strain to read. :( I've since abandoned my plan of any Asterix upgrades.

I think I was in a worse position than you - only a couple of my tattered childhood comics remained, so I needed to have the books on my shelves at the very least. The font, while initially off putting, stopped bothering me once the familiarity kicked in. I was happy the translation was left untouched, perhaps the most disappointing thing about the US Papercutz editions.

23:03 this book was referred multiple times in the 2015 Bollywood film,Tamasha!!

Have you seen the hardcover edition published by Papercutz? Could you compare it with your edition?

Hi Angshuman, I searched few of the omnibus on amazon and saw the prices between 680-850. Is this the normal range or does it fall lower?

I got a couple for 500 but most cost me around 600-700. Any more than 700 and I would wait and see if the price drops (I just got them out of order, as you see in the video) The only problem is if they become hard to find or our of print, then the regret is terrible! 😁

@@ftloc Thanks for letting me know. One of the books is currently at 682, the rest are above 700. So I'd rather wait for the prices to get lower. And thanks for your lovely videos regarding Asterix and Tintin that I got back to my love for comics which I left long back and now I am looking to complete the collection for both.

I think the contemporary satire bears scrutiny. “When a man is tired of Lutetia” implies it’s a reflection of French frustrations at Parisian attitudes to the provinces. The banquet one is an easy set up for mocking various French regions and their delicacies. As for the Cleopatra cover, that’s a riff on the Burton/Taylor Cleopatra’s marketing. Oh and the thing about Corsican chiefs turning up after years of hiding reflected a contemporary story too. There must be plenty more that went over my head at the time. Which goes for the orientalism too, alas. Mea culpa.

Very insightful! I have to admit that most probably went over my head - for example, I think I always took "When a man is tired of Lutetia..." line to 'simply' being a reference to Samuel Johnson's line about London, not having the context of Parisian attitudes. I don't think I had even seen the Cleopatra movie poster until decades after I read the comic. The fact that these still feel dense and layered - evocative even for the contextless - speaks to the talent and craft of the authors!

Hey bro, I have followed your videos...and must say your content & delivery is top notch. Don't know if you would be interested in making a video on the vocabulary used in Asterix comics. The names of characters have inherent meanings too...you would know that too... please give it a thought...it would be fascinating to hear / watch you throw light on those aspects.

Thank you s much! And you're absolutely right, the Wordplay in Asterix is great. The names and places, and puns, seem straightforward if you just say them aloud, so I've wondered if i have anything new to contribute. However, I am sure there's a fun video one can carve out, I just need to work it out 😁

Long before I recognised what the difference was, as a child I experienced that disappointed bafflement upon reading the later albums. Goscinny was an outstanding satirist, skewering the 'tempora' and the 'mores' of politics and people then as now with affection, precision and the right dash of devil-may-care honesty. Uderzo could draw but never match the tone of Goscinny's writing. He ended up recycling national stereotypes with no satirical point and no narrative purpose. Thanks for this video - it reminded me of how many wonderful Asterix albums I have to reread!

So glad you enjoyed the video, and I completely agree with how you've represented the talents of Goscinny and Uderzo. Personally, as a child I may not have known the context of what was being (lovingly) skewered, but found the characterizations just complex enough to provide me that background at the same time as seeing it lampooned! That is a sign of mastering the craft, I think, and one of the prime reasons I consider Goscinny's work here so good!
