The movie is based off the stage play for the Color Purple and Celie and Nettie were always sisters in the older film, book, and play. Celie was in a relationship with Shug in the book.

Danielle Brooks & Coleman Domingo both stole this movie for me. Their performances were top tier for me personally. I agree I didn’t evoke the same emotional connection as I did with the original movie. I do wish they would’ve marketed this as The Color Purple the Musical but it was still a good movie.

Yes the original starts out with Celie pregnant by her stepfather and he takes the baby and it’s given to the black couple ( the Pastor). I think you will be surprised if you go back to watch the 1985 movie again and see what you missed 😊!

Personally I am not a huge musical fan, I dont dislike them, just not my favorite thing. With that being said I loved this movie and will never rewatch because it had me in tears within the first 10 min and though the majority of the movie. I think for some people music/song/dance can take you out of serious moments, but for me, they were very expressive of the emotions the characters had and gave me a small much needed reprieve from heart-wrenching moments. But I like the play and the original movie just as much and I also won't rewatch them because they make me too sad.

The first movie was traumatizing enough, I still haven't forgiven Danny Glover! So shout out to you because I didn't want to watch it, but I might watch it later on because it looks like it was shot beautifully.

That's the thing about this interpretation is that it tells the story which indeed was traumatic but the way to survive the trauma is through FORGIVENESS. Thats the issue with our people and the reason these traumatic things keep happening. You have to forgive. This movie allowed a way to heal from the trauma.

@@sxm76 I noticed that too. Sir was with her when she greeted her lost family this time and they showed a but more of his suffering then getting over himself. But I can't with the SA and racial abuse, I watched the OG last year and it was still a hard watch

@@LaFayette3110 Yes, I rewatch the original a lot before this new one and I notice it always left me with a heaviness. Seeing this one helped me to resolve some things. I understand what you are saying.

Loved this version much more than the original, it feels a lot more faithful to the original book with the forefront of queer themes and reconstructing the ending that wasn’t portrayed in the original.

I hadn’t seen this movie as avoid trailers but wtf, this doesn’t work as a musical, it’s like let’s f do 12 years a slave musical. I’d absolutely love you to do Kknky Boots Movie vs Kinky boots stage Musical or Les Miserables movie vs Stage version. Always adore your end thoughts.

Honey, I totally agree that this movie should not be a musical. A few songs in the original was perfect.

Great reaction! You should react to the original since you barely remember it. This one is great but the original is AMAZING! And not a musical. Lol

I just can’t get into to idea of Color Purple as a full on musical🤷🏽‍♀️. I read the book, saw the first film. I am glad the musical film is successful; but I am taking a pass for myself.

The music is really good but it's hard to follow the story in this version. Only because I have seen the original many times.

This may be hard for many to swallow, but his movie felt like the Lifetime movie version of the 1985 version of The Color Purple...you are 100% spot on about not connecting emotionally to the characters. Everything felt rushed and they didn't take time to develop the characters' relationships. I think they relied too heavily on us all knowing the plot of the other movie. It felt lazy and thrown together. But! even within that, Taraji's performance was stellar. Sophia was overdone and Celie was underwhelming; the awkwardness and timidness of her character didn't translate well. I think seeing the first movie ruined my perception of this movie musical adaptation of the play...or maybe Spielberg should have directed again? Meh. Nonetheless, Danielle is up for an oscar for her performance and I sincerely hope she gets it. Coleman also.

It’s so ironic, Whoopi said a lot of black leaders and black organizations boycotted the 1985 movie because of the dark gloomy mood it painted black people in, they blamed it on Spielberg being out of touch with black culture. It’s interesting to see forty years later how people have come to prefer the solemn soberness of the 1985 film, while black leaders in 1985 seem to have been calling for a version that feels more like today’s version. It’s starting to look like no matter what angle is presented the opposite is preferred.

This is "based on the stage version" but it is nothing like the stage version. I love the book, the original version, and stage version. THIS new version is meh.
