The Collapsing Sandsend Tunnel Explored | NER saved the Railway from Disaster

Ойын-сауық

We fully explore the Sandsend Tunnel. It formed part of the Whitby, Redcar & Middlesbrough Union Railway.
Work began in 1871, the plan, was to have elevated sections of railway above the sea, tied into the cliff edge.
The Chief Contractor, a Mr J H Tolmé, was often given to exaggerate and prone to telling the board of directors what he thought they wanted to hear.
This railway was funded and owned by shareholders who were keen to get the railway open to see their investments flourish.
However, the contractor ran out of money and was sacked in 1874 when work had stopped.
The original plan, of elevating the railway along the cliff edge, proved too difficult, due to the lack of expected bedrock.
Soft sandstone, clay and chalk were often encountered, and could not be used to elevate from.
The North Eastern Railway was asked by the board of directors, to save the railway and complete the build.
After checking the design, it was rubbished by NER and a new route was proposed, incorporating today’s Sandsend Tunnel which we are going to explore.
The line closed on the 5th May 1958 after a small section of the line north of the Sandsend Station slipped down the bank towards the sea.
With the rising costs of maintaining the tunnels and viaducts, British Rail decided rather quickly that this line was not required as part of the Restructuring of British Railways.

The Loftus to Whitby line was closed in May 1958 because it was grossly uneconomic and major expenditure was needed on the tunnels, and particularly on the viaducts. It didn't close because of any landslide and the sunken ground near Sandsend has happened since closure. The only known use of diesel engines through the tunnel was about 1958 when a dmu travelled from Whitby to Kettleness and return as it had newly arrived and they wanted to see what it could do. Dismantling from 1958 to 1960 used a diesel shunter. In the 1950s I remember travelling on this line several times.

Fascinating history. This tunnel didn't look too safe. I've not seen soot that thick in a tunnel before. Exploring Dave is funny. Big fan. I enjoyed this video. Brilliant.

An interesting fact is that the 1947 British comedy film "Holiday Camp", has the opening shots of a train arriving at a seaside cliff-top station and passengers boarding buses outside the station these scenes were filmed at Sandsend.

This was a really interesting tunnel and explore. I thoroughly enjoyed the video. It's amazing to think that the tunnels were dug out mostly by hand in those days. Out of interest, I wonder how many railway sleepers it took to lay track the length of the tunnel ? It's a shame that the tunnel is failing...🙂👍👍

  • @ALWResearchTeam

Glad you enjoyed it and there are between 1700 - 2000 sleepers per mile so Sandsend would have had 1800 due to the incline and curve is my estimate. NER built to a very good standard. Thank You so much for your support by watching, commenting and thumbs up

Hi, The Bricks and Debris at 13.30 would be the Shaft top which would finish above ground level about 10 feet high, It would have been simply demolished and thrown down into the shaft, possibley dug down belowe ground level and capped, then filled over with earth.

What do you make of the plans to reopen the tunnel as a cycle path? Is it possible to save it?

  • @ALWResearchTeam

    @ALWResearchTeam

    2 жыл бұрын

Hello there, that would be lovely and it certainly is a scenic route. Unfortunately without heavy investment the Sandsend tunnel will become more likely to collapse by the day. Long may it live and a cycle track would work excellently. However as you can see in the video the tunnel integrity is close to breaking point. Thanks for watching and commenting

@@ALWResearchTeam try having two 4 gas detectors 1 that's got co and the other that's got co2. The other 3 gases (lels, H2s and O2) Coal over time gives off Co and in really none vented areas you get huge build up of co2. One tunnel IV been in,after last vent shaft you hit a bank of co2....above 5000ppm. Just be safe guy's
