When cats get into fights, they puff up their fur to look bigger compared to their opponent. When cats get stressed, they groom their fur to calm down. I'd like to think of John as a sort of cat in spirit, especially because this is the internet.

I almost feel like I should apologise for voting for Hank's hair, but I think the issue is the Puff reminds me too much of the Pyramid of Frizz that is my own hair. Although I have learned to love my hair, and I do of course admire your Puff greatly as well John, the appeal of the unattainably non-frizzardly inclined Hank Hair swayed me in the end.

John, because of you I decided to revisit a doctor about my OCD and anxiety. I’m 20 and out of shame I rejected treatment. Then I found your vlogs. Finding out someone with a mental illness can actually accomplish awesome things like you have has inspired me to seek treatment. I’ll never be 100% healed(I had a panic attack today for instance) but now I have a better chance to achieve my goals. I doubt we’ll ever meet but you should know that talking about your illness has actually impacted someone’s life.

I also think it's great that John has used his platform to help decrease the stigma around mental illness but it bears pointing out that people like you, who have the bravery to talk about this out of a motivation of sheer gratitude, deserve special recognition and applause.

John's openness about his mental health has really helped me too. I'm not ready to see a doctor yet because my anxiety makes that a really difficult thing for me to do, but knowing that someone I have looked up to for all of my teenage years (I'm now 18) and have respected and admired for all of that time, lives with and handles mental illness so effectively gives me an immense amount of hope and positivity for my future. tl;dr same, thanks John

Oh, don't worry John, I took the survey as soon as I watched Hank's video and when I got to question 25, I paused and I said (out loud to myself and my cats, because it was 2 AM and I was in my room) "Well Hank just got that new haircut... but the Puff" and proceeded to vote you. I am also very impressed with how at the Paper Towns NYC premiere, despite the unbearable heat and stress (and the fact that you kept wiping sweat off your face), the Puff remained so remarkably puffy. Also, I'm worried that you may have forgotten the Great Batman Debate. I would say that was truly a divisive moment in Nerdfighteria. And while you are correct that we've never been "Team Hank" vs "Team John", we may occasionally be "Team Hank and John" vs "Team John and Hank".

With the census I felt that a lot of questions asked me whether I did something at school (and not at work), when -- I don't go to school anymore. Like it felt very geared towards a younger audience, which is alright, but I kind of felt left out, I guess? And maybe that's why it looks as if 85% of us were unemployed, because the survey does not ask many things about people with jobs.

Claudia Oikawa a lot of us felt that way. I filled out the final question where they ask if you have anything to add by suggesting that they include work categories next time. I mean, they have age categories going up to retirement age, they can't think we're all schoolkids!

After so many years of seeing your background, now I finally understand the reason for the beer-can sword. It took me too long to read that book.

After I took the survey I remembered something I could have said. I really love your videos and I think it would be great to have some sort of unbiased news show that covered anything important happening in the world, not just science like on SciShow. Again thanks for the awesome content you guys put out there and I know that you guys must be always busy, just wanted to put that idea out there.

One reason your unemployment numbers are a little skewed is because you have no way to separate dependants. I am a housewife, so I don't work.

GoldenJeweler See, this is kind of the problem with how the census is calculating "employed" vs. "unemployed" because you wouldn't technically count as unemployed. To be unemployed you have to be seeking employment, but not currently employed. Not having a job because you're too young, or are supported by your parents, or are a stay at home mom/dad, or you are unable to work, or you have some other means of support, isn't unemployment in the census-y meaning of the word.

Sorry, John. I already voted for Hank's hair, mostly because Your hair has been in power for too long. I believe in change and term limits. And now that I think of it, I was at your Industry keynote at Vidcon. You addressed a room full of ~1,000 of the people who had paid the most to come to Vidcon with wet hair. Your speech was great, as usual, and I know you were under a lot of stress with Paper Towns opening. But if you want to hang on to your hair status, you can't phone it in. You gotta earn it.

A VIDEO ABOUT THE PUFF!!! YESSSSS!!!!!!! You have no idea how long I have waited for a puff levels video... #TeamPuff

I think this is the very first time i have watched a vlogbrothers video, though i have watched a lot of crash course history, chemistry, biology, and other stuff along with many many scishow videos. I also did that survey he's talking about at one point.

Employment rate thing is interesting. If it is accurate for the age groups. Employment /has/ been difficult... I have 2 degrees, highest GPA for my majors, squeaky clean record, and even min wage positions don't so much as offer interviews. Many many of my friends have a similar story, but perhaps it's the states we live in. Book towers are looking cool too, makes me want to compete!

Some temp agencies have tech divisions or have staff that have an affinity for tech people. I hate interviewing and love job offers. Temping gives you the foot in the door. It's way underrated as a tool Good luck to you. 🍀

***** I definitely did. For the record, even though I voted for Hank's hair, I frequently use "puff levels are high" when talking with friends about stress and stuff. My hair is pretty long, so it doesn't puff like yours, but the phrase works really well. DFTBA!

I'm with you on the school questions being awkward. As an older member of the Nerdfighteria, I'm thrilled that my age group is included in your census. Having options that refer to my necessity to have full time employment would be awesome as well.

same here. maybe the reason the nerdfighteria unemployment level is so high is that people with jobs quit taking the survey because they felt it was not aimed at them.

The hair question was the one on the survey that made me grateful that none of the questions were obligatory. I couldn't choose.

A beautiful use of the rhetorical technique of apophasis! (In which the orator brings up a subject by denying that they would ever stoop to saying such a thing.) That plus 'pileous' in one video - I feel so enriched.

Dammit. I already filled out the census survey, and I voted for Hank's hair not really thinking about it much. I should have voted for John. John, you're right, you're hair is much more iconic and has much more personality. What the heck was I thinking? On the plus side, I'm happily employed as an English Teacher in Japan. I guess I'm in the 15% of working Nerdfighteria. Actually, my guess is a lot of Nerdfighteria is students still. I know I was until recently. That might explain the high percentage. Maybe it would be better to have a way for people to report that they are students etc. instead of just asking their income.

Cool, I'm just a little bit bored, so I'm spamming lots of comments to drum up support for Hank's Hair. John's sublte 'I'm not running a negative campaign' spurred me on to retaliate (but politely). I have never fully appreciated the lack of audience driven competition between the vlogbrothers before, in the sense of not having a team John or team Hank. Just another thing that makes Nerdfighteria so lovely.

I love how you use the copies of your own books to try and build your book tower!!

Educated and unemployed. I spend most days filling out resumes/questionnaires for employment; then in response to those filled opportunities... I wait. While the internet does make things easier on funding a job search... it does create a dividing wall between employer and hopeful candidate. I do have an opportunity or two in the works, but the standard wait time keeps me in a position that the word "suspense" has nothing on. Day to day progress leans my expectations of my future to a four letter word, fear. Fear leads to hope. I hope for a better future that is gained through my persistent goal of my own personal set marks of success. To live in fear when I have done everything expected of me is something I see in too many people.

glad I took the survey feeling part of the community for the first time

I was busy watching John build the tower and totally missed what he said so I had to rewind. Though his tower building skills may not be sturdy, it is enthralling to watch him try.

We all know Dave has the best hair

If it was going to be capitalist vs socialist, capitalism is an older concept like John's puff is an older concept. Therefore, John's Puff= Capitalist. John's rising and falling puff is also the same as the risings and fallings of a capitalism's stock market. Hank's Haircut is a newer concept like socialism. The fact that Hank fully controls his hair is the same as the fact that Socialist states had very strong state control. This is unlike John's puff of which John doesn't really control the puff level. I hope this analysis helped :)

John, your hair is fabulous! It's always been fabulous. This new cut is still fabulous. Hank had to up his fabulous, and now his hair is also fabulous. Please never discard the poof, it's wonderful and unique and so very you! btw, that Q was really hard to decide on... why on earth couldn't we pick both of you!?

I actually was thinking about why there were questions about 'at school' but not 'at work' - a lot of us Nerdfighters are out of school now, or even work part time while studying! If it was a school/work option, maybe that would have been more inclusive of older Nerdfighters!

I feel so much worse about not only my reply to the census, but also my tumblr post highlighting how much better Hank's hair is. TEAM PRODUCT!

Alanna R. I think that'd be really difficult to do, because there are so many places to be active in nerdfighteria. There's all of the various video channels that the vlogbrothers have a hand in (and their comment sections), ways to connect on tumblr and twitter and facebook and the ning and in your pants, not to mention IRL nerdfighter groups and meet ups, and I imagine there are as many active nerdfighters as there are ways to connect, if not more. Not to mention that DFTBA employs a bunch of nerdfighters, who get paid to help increase awesome and decrease suck for their jobs... so... much more complicated. Maybe you'd have to expand the number or specify like... nerdfighters connecting from x.

christian garrison I mean, the audience that vlogbrothers attract are usually people who are still in school (either middle/high school or college). I think it's also that maybe the people who are out of school but not yet employed have the time to see the videos? Hopefully that will balance out as the census reaches more nerdfighters.

Dear John, I have never laughed this hard at your videos before. I am crying from laughter. Needed that. Now to use pilius in a sentence casually today....

The first book I ever loved was probably Where the Wild Things Are, because of course it was. But I think the first books that got me excited about reading and made me want to read more and faster and start speed reading competitions with my best friend (I always lost) was the Nancy Drew series. Those books were easy enough to read but the mysteries were gripping and the teenage girls were cool and exciting and I loved getting into them. Those and the Wishbone tv series actually had a series of chapter books which I also loved.
