The Coal Exchange Hotel - A Bit Of History And Luxury In Cardiff Bay

Mel surprises me with a stay at The Coal Exchange Hotel. A historic hotel in the heart of Cardiff Bay, South Wales.
As well as a stay at the hotel we have dinner and a few drinks at their restaurant, Culley's Kitchen & Bar.
The hotel dates from the 1880s and opened in Cardiff Docks as the Coal and Shipping Exchange when Cardiff became the biggest coal port in the world.
The Coal Exchange closed in 1958 and coal exports came to an end in 1964. It reopened as a hotel in 2017.

About 20 years ago, when I was married to my second wife and lived in Cwmbran, we used to go to lots of live concerts. I was always an Ian Hunter fan (previously of Mott The Hoople fame) and his Rant Band were appearing at The Coal Exchange; it was a venue then. One thing I remember about that concert most of all was that I had a friend from Manchester who was also a Hunter fan and came to stay with us for a couple of nights, to go to the gig. My wife liked a drink (Yes, here we go, down the slippery slope) and by the time we got to the concert on the night, she was a little bit...past it. I remember my friend saying we were supposed to carry her out, not in...! Actually, that night was quite historic because 3 founder members of Mott took the stage together for the first time in what must have been 30 years or more; Ian Hunter, Mick Ralphs and Verden Allen (the latter of whom actually came over before the gig and started talking to me - I was chuffed). It was called the 'Taking The Mick' tour because Mick Ralphs joined Hunter's Rant band for it. Fantastic venue (and I also saw them at 6 or 7 other venues around UK that tour, sometimes going back to the hotels for the after gig drinks, on one occasion walking through the streets of Manchester with the drummer - who was previously Paul McCartney's Wings drummer [Steve Holley]).

Hello from the States. Another interesting and entertaining video. I am learning more and more about Wales each week by watching your videos. I like when historic buildings are refurbished and given new life. The food looks delicious, especially the breakfast. Never had baked beans for breakfast before but I’m sure it goes good with eggs, sausage and ham. Still catching up on some previous walking videos. Stay safe and be well.
