The Club + Blackout - In the Heights
Ойын-сауық

Blackout is a work of genius. I remember seeing it in 2010 - the entire audience was shitting their pants thinking the power had actually gone out. And what a dramatic way to end the first act! In terms of showstoppers, it really doesn't get much better than this.

Yeah I agree, I've never seen the original version of the musical but seeing it in this video how Vanessa was dancing with other people and Usnavi was trying his best to be with her while in the movie he practically just gave her up and then tried to be a show off towards her by dancing with someone else. Honest to God, the movie version just makes him seem more like an asshole while the original version makes Vanessa seem like a conceited bitch if you know what I mean.

I'm very sorry, but could someone explain why blackouts are bad/scary in America?
@archiermanilo23
3 жыл бұрын
@@theumbrellaone5772 Well, I'd say it's more to do with blackouts in big cities like New York, as they're interconnected, and mainly lit up by buildings and stree lights, so taking all that away leaves everything in darkness. As well as that, power cuts are less common as than in more rural areas, so there are less precautions taken. And with all that, there are people who would take advantage of the situation, as there always are. Like in the song, with people trying to rob Usnavi's store.

I WAS WATCHING CLOSELY THE FIGHT SCENE BEFORE THE BLACKOUT AND I AM LAUGHING TOO HARD BECAUSE THIS IS GENIUS: 1.- Immediately after Benny punches this guy Everything kinda freezes and Usnavi is in the back holding Vanessa like yo wtf 2.- Graffiti Pete ditches the girl he's dancing with and pushes her aside. 3.- Nina reaches to stop Benny and Graffiti Pete pulls her back towards the girl he was dancing with. 4.- Usnavi freaking pushing the guy who wants to punch Benny lmao 5.- Some guy helps Usnavi up before some other guy tries to pick a fight with him. 6.- Graffiti Pete kinda TWIRLED the guy Benny punched and threw him off. 7.- Benny escapes the hold of Hat Guy and Nina tried to calm him down. He pushes her away. 8.- Vanessa goes and KICKS the guy with the hat XD 9.- And Daniela, in the far left, is pulling a shoe off to throw it to someone XDD All in, like, 10 seconds. @@edwardjacobus6986 I think you're ignoring that this blackout took place right after a fight went down at a club which could have easily lead to someone's death and induce mass panic. The characters are aware of the state of the town they live so such an occurrence like this is legitimately dangerous and terrifying. Also most of them did go home right after, they just needed to find the people they came to the club with and were naturally concerned about their safety.

@@sydneytrainsareshit It's always cool seeing someone with a different opinion. I personally enjoyed the interpretation of Vanessa in the film more than on the stage. Not comparing Karen and Melissa btw, imo they both play their version of the character well

Here to cleanse myself of the changes from the film (loved the film btw I just have a soft spot for the original)

In high school I did sounds for this musical and the blackout moments were the toughest because I had to mute, raise, and cut lights in the sound booth within 10 seconds of each other.

This is the part I'm most excited to see when the movie comes out!!!
I love this club scene sooo much better than the movie.
Blackout gives me shivers no matter how many times I listen to it!
Blackout and inutil is one of my favorite songs from in the heights. Black out is such a work of genius i swear
SO MUCH IS GOING ON, AND IT'S AMAZING
This scene could’ve been iconic in the movie had they stuck to the freaking Script
this musical makes me feel emotions i never knew i had
0:00 - the club 5:58 - blackout
THIS is beautiful.
i am in love with the “oh no”s that the ensemble sing in this song.
NO ONE CAN RECREATE THE PANIC LIKE THE OBC IVE CHECKED TRUST ME
"Yo, I can't see, quit shovin' mothafucka-" Usnavi and Hamilton radiate so much short people energy
i don't even know anything about this musical but this song made me want to see it live!
What are they clapping at the beginning of Blackout?

I think a lot of the audience didn't realise it was a new song so start clapping when they've realised it's a new song? not 100% sure though

Pretty sure they were applauding the cast suddenly bringing out flashlights for the performance. You can kind of see the spots of light from 6:21. When my college out up In the Heights, they did the same thing. We all thought the theater's power actually got cut, then applauded when we realized it was part of the musical!

Emil Hofileña i think ots cuz of all the mixes of the voices. Cuz if u notice there clapping after “Oye que paso” So they start to clap like 2 seconds after all the songs come tongue in a beautiful genius tht only lin manuel coud write. He is a geniu
I just recently thought: “where’s Vanessa when the fight breaks out?” At 5:52 you see her break away from Usnavi to hide in a corner, but then literally 5 seconds later starts kicking someone on the ground 😂💀😂
Poor Usnavi she’s started dancing with someone while he was talking to her and he followed her around trying to have a conversation 🥺
watching this slime tutorial after seeing the film version blackout just so i could feel something :^/
Wouldn't make a bit of sense story wise, but I wouldn't mind living in an alternate universe where this is the finale and I'm Home gets this spot.
Love. This. PERIOD!!!
Man i feel like the movie totally altered everything about these two scenes

Help me figure out why every time Sonny tries to close the grate but it's stuck I start to choke up
I'm gonna rant here, so please bare with me.. I love Blackout. It's my number 1 favorite song of the entire soundtrack. But I kind of hate the movie version of it. And the biggest reason why I hate it is because it completely cuts and changes the original scene of Pete and Sonny trying to protect the Bodega. Sonny is SO important to this whole scene and song and he's almost completely cut out of it in the movie. In the original, you can see and hear how much Sonny really cares about the Bodega, and how desperate he is to protect it, and this all really reverberates back to Sonny's "Powerless" line and it's meaning. And that whole scene being cut and changed in the movie effectively adds more to my absolute least favorite thing about the In The Heights movie. The almost complete cutting of absolutely everything that's negative. Kevin's blatant racism towards Benny, The entire song "Enough" that literally calls out Kevin and Nina's bullshit (Kevin's racism towards Benny and Nina's lying to Camila and Kevin), The whole fact that Nina had and LOST a scholarship (NOT that Kevin was paying her tuition and Nina was saying "I know you can't pay it, Dad!")- ONLY BECAUSE she had to work TWO JOBS to pay for books and school because her scholarship only covered part of her tuition, AND juggle college, so her grades were below the cut off, Usnavi and Pete's original relationship, And.. The entire very realistic fact that during the blackout that there were thugs and robbers running rampant trying to break into places. The lyrics during Sonny and Pete's scene changed from: Broadway: [SONNY] We are powerless! We are powerless! [PETE] Yo! Yo! They throwin' bottles in the street People lootin' and shootin' Sonny, they wanna see a robbery, We gotta keep movin'! [SONNY] Naw, man, I can't leave, we gotta guard the store! [PETE] They gonna bombard the store Until you ain't got a store no more! [SONNY] I got a baseball bat on the rack in the back! [PETE] I got a couple Roman candles We can distract the vandals! [SONNY] Hey, yo, I see some thugs comin'! Man, we gonna get jacked up! [PETE] Gimme a light, I'll be right back. Back up- [PETE/SONNY] Back up! Back up! To.. Movie: It's getting hotter in the street! Everybody is nervous Hey yo, we gotta be at Usnavi's Street-light out of service Because we're powerless our hour is at hand It's you and me You know what we gotta do? Illuminate the community When the sparks ignite, we got' light up the night Bottle rockets don't go locus everybody let's focus Gather round, these are free Grab your ammo and stack up Give me a light, 'till the power comes Back up! Back up! Back up! And... I hate it. It's basically gone from "Yo! I gotta protect my and my cousin's store from getting robbed! Set off some fireworks to distract them, so we don't get lit up ourselves!" To "Yo! I don't gotta worry about the very realistic idea of vandals running around in NEW YORK CITY and ROBBING PLACES. This is the BEST time for a little moment to show how strong our community is!" It frankly feels like a storybook for children! -And NOT an absolutely beautiful story about the struggles and life of immigrants! I still absolutely love the In The Heights movie, it's a very well done adaptation of the original Broadway musical. But I just have a few problems with it, and when one of the biggest problems come from my number 1 favorite song of the entire musical, it really sets me off. And I just wanted to get this off of my chest.

I watched the movie adaptation blindly and I could tell something was missing, so it all clicked when looking at the Broadway version. Although this extends further than Blackout, I also really disliked how Benny and Nina were sidelined for Usnavi and Vanessa; Nina and Benny were still the better couple imo and Usnavi and Vanessa’s added screentime only made them worse (I stopped rooting for them as soon as Usnavi shamed her for dancing with other men, something he encouraged her to do in the first place!).
