The Club (1980) FILMING LOCATIONS
Ойын-сауық
REEL STREETS OF MELBOURNE - EPISODE 4
The Club was produced in 1980, written by David Williamson, directed by Bruce Beresford and starring John Howard, Jack Thompson, Graham Kennedy and Frank Wilson.
38 years later I will go in search of all the locations where this classic Aussie movie was filmed.
The film features Mike Brady's 1978 football anthem "Up There Cazaly"
Mostly filmed at Collingwood's home ground Victoria Park but also other inner city areas as well.
Produced, performed and edited by Paul Hagl

Pom here. Best Sport movie of all time . If it had been made in the US ; it would have bagged an Oscar or two. The Guy who played the Coach put in a brilliant performance.

Thanks! I wished more people watched it. Feel free to share it 👍
First saw this film years ago on late night TV - brilliantly scripted and acted, full of issues which would resonate with fans of every football code, world wide.
I know nothing about Australian Rules Football but this is a good movie, It's on Amazon Prime just now, You don't have to know about Aussie Rules to love this film, Jack Thompson's moustache in this film is stuff of legend.

Thankyou for all to watch 👍🏼
The Club is so underrated. I love the performances, the politics and petty arguments, and of course the characters. It's such an entertaining film. Your video was a nice update from the location featurette that's on the DVD release, which I'm sure you've seen. I love how many of those old sports grounds keep little parts history like the turnstiles, even though they may not be as practical.

@M I love soccer, being from England, but I think it would be really sad if the game took over in Australia. 'Footy' is a unique part of Australian culture, and I hope it continues to thrive. There's room for both sports, particularly with them being played at different times of the year.
I was lucky enough to enjoy the VFL trrough the 80s and 90s being in the fitzroy cheer squad i have many great memories but the 2 years we spent at victoria park was a great time , making the banners across the road from the ground thursday nights and match day saturdays , It was so different back then not a national league the old suburban grounds were great

@M no one asked for your opinion on the future of soccer in Australia and it does not belong in this thread good sir
I really enjoyed seeing that.i remember watching the club with my classmates at school in 1986 😂..thanks so much for all the trouble you went to finding the locations.
The Club is one of my favourites, a very underrated Aussie film
Great research. It is a classic, and living in this area I remember those scenes.
Thank you fella great stuff loved that film
That was bloody excellent
This is great! Thanks Paul for making these. A lot of these movies came out when I was still in primary school (or younger) and it's interesting to see how much Melbourne has changed since then. It was certainly a golden age of Australian film then and a good snap shot of life at the time. Thanks again, from Browny.
Brilliantly done. I lived in Melbourne 2004-07 and did get inside Vic Park before the Rush Stand was levelled. Too bad you could not have gotten inside the old ’G. Funny how every stand has been rebuilt since they movie.

Thanks for watching and the share on Twitter. I appreciate it.
Not an AFL fan, but I enjoy these videos looking back in time.
As somebody that grew up around the grounds in their teens, this movie was such a cool find, getting to see what it looked like back then!

Money controls everything now. Even Football. Mostly why they changed it to the AFL. Then they can drag the other states into it and make more Money.
Amazing video, thank you for this
I absolutely loved the movie the club with the greatest legend Graham Kennedy
I don't have a fucken clue about Aussie Rules..but the film is absolutely one of the best films you will ever see...it's simply brilliant.
I saw this film in England in 1980, maybe 81 - a strange choice for regular TV in England, but there it was one night. I really enjoyed it, and the clips of the game, even though I hadn't got a clue what was going on. I got to see for real on a trip over to Australia in 2007. Too late for Victoria Park, but the game was 'sold' to me watching a Collingwood v Carlton fixture in May of that year at the MCG. On that, and a further trip a couple of years later, I took in games also at the whatever-it's-called-this-year Dome on the other side of the CBD, Geelong, Adelaide, The Gabba, The SCG, and Subiaco, plus a WAFL game at Fremantle.
I was 11 in 1980, and remember a much better Melbourne than now. Oh, well.
You're funnier than the movie, that last bit had me in stitches

It’s kind of sad that virtually none of the Victorian AFL based teams play at their old suburban home grounds (except Geelong).

Mate I got a kick out of this, bloody funny stuff and very nostalgic. Thanks, you brought me back to my childhood for 15 minutes
Good video bloke, saw this and the 'Malcolm' one for the first time today. 'On the Beach' with Ava Gardner, Gregory Peck and a young Bill Hunter, have you done that? The old episodes of 'Homicide', they would be well worth trawling through, first stop, Russell Street.
Good movie a must watch.
Excellent _ thanks for The Memories #Collingwood #Forever
The boring rectangular building at Kew Junction at 1:39 hasn't changed except for the multitude of mobile phone towers on the roof ........ a sign of the times.
I Absolutely love this movie
Thanks for this, fun to watch, my favorite Aussie comedy. I wonder at times if Eddy Maguire modelled himself on Ted Parker, they are so similar it's almost eerie. If ever I saw Maguire in public I doubt I'd resist the urge to yell "Get back to the pie factory ya fat turd!"
love these comparisons great work shame some things have to change
I played on the old Victoria park couple of times here
That was seriously awesome. Great work. I always assumed Geoff’s house must be in East Melbourne, well done on finding that. Part of the novelty of watching The Club is seeing what Melbourne was like when I was a kid and the old VFL days.
The wog house at 12:52 had me in fits of laughter ... it hasn't chagned at all in all those years .... it's probably exactly the same on the inside as well ..... ha ha ha ................
Fantastic video, and fascinating to see some of the film locations then and now. Love the humour throughout, and based on the footage at the very end you look like a kid with potential. Great job 👍

Awesome stuff mate, good job!
I've been to Ted Parker's house in Bulla Road on a doorknock. Nearly couldn't believe my eyes when I saw that garage!!!!
very well edited, i have wondered where some of those locations were where it was filmed.
At the start where you are standing Paul next to the freeway on that exact spot is one location filmed from HOMICIDE episode was "The long weekend"
A blu ray release is overdue
One thing i hate about the AFL, they got rid of the old suburban grounds

The power of Money. The AFL is all about Money. They could not care less about the fans that support the clubs. Football is just another way to sell advertising.

One ground they should re-develop is Princes park oval,...the old stadium is showing a lot of wear and tear I heard, they should knock it down or do a 'Wembley' and build a brand new boutique stadium next to it, plenty of space there. Melbourne needs a third stadium really. Carlton and Essendon could be the tenants, and bring back Saturday afternoon games,...there would be ideal. As for the other suburban grounds you talked about, they are only good for training ovals really.
Absolutely brilliant - thanks for making this video - you're a star even though you suck at playing footy.
Stick with it, you will grow 👍
Good old Lou Richards, the mouth of the south .
Jock's factory location would be great. "You don't hear whispers Jock, you start them!" Well put together by the way.
Those ticket booths are broad up the only way to see those turning styles from the inside of the Victoria park
“I was an acknowledged champion”! Who gave John Howard that line?! That aside, it’s a good trip down memory lane.
Ha ha. That was brilliant. Well done.
The Club is available on DVD from Umbrella Entertainment and can be found here www.umbrellaent.com.au/movies/1947-club-the-classic-australian-films.html
Mate, Why didn't you go into the boardroom in the old Collingwood social club. It is where they shot a lot of the scenes. They let me in there about 4/5 years ago. The old long table and little cabinet bar is still there. Great video by the way. Love how you found Geoff's house.

My Blue Heaven I went inside and snooped around. The door was locked for the boardroom. Too scared to ask because I always get a no. I don’t really have interiors in my videos. Thanks for watching.
Bloody brillant. Pity it has the Pies in it
Thanks for posting. A good movie to "where was it filmed" would be Oz, A rock and roll road story. Lots of flinders street and melb city etc.
I... Just can't hear "Up There, Cazaly" anymore without thinking of Aunty Donna's sketch _"Cock Whisperer"._ Thanks, Aunty Donna!

I was born in '79, so practically an infant when this movie was made. From '93 to '03 I was so obsessed with Collingwood that i used to take the train to Vic Park with my equally obsessed mate and we'd hang around the ground all arvo. Then we'd go home and watch The Club twice. I was a paid up member and went to every match in Melbourne for 3 whole seasons which was pretty tricky for a 15 year old to organise (Waverly was pretty hard to get to) transport for in the 90s. Now, i hate football. I couldn't give a fat rat's you know what about Collingwood and i don't even know any players after the Brisbane GF losses. I guess i didn't take it well and completely turned my back on it all like a heroin junkie going straight. Thanks for the awkardly poignant memories Phagl..

@M You're talking to wrong person. I don't like any sports now. Tennis, swimming, round ball, oval ball whatever, i have zero interest in sport. I am actually of Eastern European descent and it made no difference to me aa a teenager. AFL was far and away more interesting than soccer. Now, sport bores the hell out of me.
What happened to John Howard by the time he got to All Saints? Wow😂
