The Closest to Sword Art Online's Nerve Gear You Can Buy RIGHT NOW

Ғылым және технология

Hello and welcome to Virtually Odd, where I look at odd VR Devices through the decades. Today I am trying out Looxid Link an EEG Brain interface designed for a VR headset. Is this as close as we have been to Sword Art Online? Or is this utter BS?
We'll see.

Chami that is a great observation I’m sure coupled with using AI training with 1000s of peoples brains mapped it could make the process easier since obviously everyone is different but there are areas of the brain that do the same stuff so it wouldn’t be hard to use a generalised set of data coupled with some training by the end user to be able to get a decent result without needing to spend days or months to train it by a single user though that is just my theory. Would be cool to see

4:55 When you describe the meditation app and how it would show red when you were relaxed, which indicated you were not relaxed. So, you bounced back and forth between mindsets. It reminded me of the Big Bang Theory when Sheldon did something similar in order to concentrate better, I forget exactly. Basically, he'd panic, then get too calm, panic about it, back and forth.

On a more serious note, reading out loud is one of the most engaging processes that you can do with your brain at any one time. That's probably why the concentration levels were so high in the fireball throwing exercise when he "thinking and yelling whatever colour was right in front of me" at 8:38 .

I have ADHD and I used neurotherapy to treat it it for a while, and I’m going to say I completely believe that the concentration/relaxation wasn’t arbitrary at all. The therapy I used a lot was that they hook your brain up to a machine, had a movie playing, and the less focused your brain got, the bigger these black bars covered the screen and got in the way of the movie. It used a reward system to teach my brain how to focus more, and actually improved my ADHD. Afterwards, my brain felt significantly less foggy. I had to stop because it was expensive, but I specifically remember the neurologist saying something along the lines like “your gamma levels are low, so your alpha and beta levels are heightened to make up for it. It works most of the time but when you need to focus is when it shows the cracks in its efficiency”. It might not have been those wavelengths specifically, but that was effectively what he said. Even when I felt like I was concentrating super hard, the movie would get blocked out, but over time I learned how to “lower” my brain levels and they would go away most of the time. I don’t really know how to describe it, but it’s like a tingling sensation in my head when I do it. The neurologist said that they used the reward system to teach the brain a new way to level out brain waves and get rid of my ADHD, and learning how to master that “tingling” sensation is essential to being able to get myself to focus. And no, it wasn’t BS. Here’s a medical paper to prove it www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6538574/ So what I’m saying is that it’s very likely that the machine was working exactly as intended, it’s just that you have less control over your concentration than you believe. Because I wholeheartedly believe this machine is working well! Please get this comment up so that he sees this! I think this is something he should see!

well, technically there are few a bit simpler forms of EEG, i.e.: 4 electrodes band... still, this set up is only set at pfc so claiming that you can measure whole brain activity from it is a bit of a joke, beside does it fit and conducts well? I'd be surprised. It would be great if it would be sold with a warning on the long list of limitations such setup has, but it would probably be a shot in the foot on the marketing side. Regardless, respect to looxid labs for exploring this frontier! ;)

@@Laszer271 Prosthetic arms controlled by the mind are very heavily customized per person. It isn't possible to mass produce. The way they work is you use an EEG to monitor the persons brain activity, you tell the person to [attempt] to move a specific appendage in a specific way, and capture that data. Many, many times. You then tell the prosthetic arm to use that specific brain activity to move the prosthetic appendage equivalent to move in the same way the person (who is being monitored) attempted to move the missing appendage. Repeat over, and over, and over until full control of prosthetic is achieved. This is why it would be extremely difficult to mass produce any sort of VR controlled by the mind.

So cool interesting story, When i was in high school the local University in my city (Queens University in Kingston Ontario) had a little program/experiment kinda thing that I was apart of! Basically it was this game a child's horror game where you went to your grandmothers house to visit and find out its been taken over by shadow demons who thrive in the dark! (Kinda looked a bit like Psychonaughts) anyhow in the game it's completley dark and in the dark you can be attacked so in order to move through the game you had this anglerfish hat (I know it was kinda weird) that lighted up your way... NOW HEARS THE KICKER the light is controlled by your mind, as in a headset was strapped to your head that read your brainwaves and the more calm and collected you were the brighter the light would shine and the more damage to the monsters you would do! This was freaking awesome to me as a kid but the thing that stuck out to me were the puzzles. there was maze puzzles that you needed to complete to open doors where you had a light beam go through the maze, but you didnt use the controller to decide where it went you used your mind, As in if I thought "Go Left" then the beam would go left. Ive been trying to fnd more information on the program and game as it was one of the coolest things I have ever done! and I was one of like 3 kids who actually beat it! So if anyone knows about this game or wants more info id love to hear!

As a researcher, i've crossed paths with a couple of EEG based projects and yes, it is way more complicated than just attaching some electrodes to your forehead and interpret any given signal in a standarized way. The thing is, there are organic variations in each brain (as minimal as they can be) as well as the way its resources are used. One of the solutions that I applied was to callibrate the readings for each volunteer. That is to say, by retrieving and averaging the EEG signals for certain stimuli, we obtained significant better predictive results.

Thanks for all your vids bro, I’m really enjoying the ride! 🙏 I’m glad you get to explore all these headsets! I just wanted to chime in here as an experienced meditator and qigong practitioner. Most people tend to strain when they attempt to concentrate. Paradoxically, one must relax when focusing the mind. It’s possible that as you’re attempting to concentrate, you’re having the opposite effect of what this device is measuring. For me, concentration comes with relaxation. Parasympathetic nervous system activation. A state of true concentration and one pointedness of mind is highly pleasurable and ecstatic, and the opposite of tense or strain. If you will forgive the reference, sex is a great example. You’re really concentrated in the monument and fully present, ecstatic, and at the same time relaxed. I hope that makes sense.😅 I agree that there should be clear instructions with the device at any rate, a clear tutorial would really help anyone pick it up and know what measurements are taken and what the goals are.

Depending on game mode you were supposed to have more or less brain activity than your opponent to push the ball in the middle past the goal. I think I found visualizing colors to be the effective medium as well. For low activity I just pictured a flat single color and nothing else, for max activity I went with a mental kaleidoscope of rapidly changing colors

it worked as intended, your thoughts scattered so relaxed saying something gives you something to focus on moving your arms gives you something to focus on trying to stand still and just think relaxes you. you may be thinking one thing but the total brain activity drops, if you want full control eeg you are looking at over 1000 wire electrodes on your head a lot of gel and a ton of programing to make a character react in a simulation, but it can be done. not comfortably yet.

@@Myowzie when xbox one first launched, it used voice commands so people would go in with names that included "xboxonesignoff" and grief their own team mates trying to get people to say aloud their names and sign off... there are many video compilations of this, it's pretty funny usually as people are usually laughing at their mistake after... And then there's like the issue with stuff being recorded by home devices because it thought people were giving it verbal cues... I was mostly trying to make a joke more than anything. Like if they had link start, they might have link end, cause people LOVE voice commands nowadays.... and you know it would be abused at launch lol.

seeing this has me so excited. The one thing I want more then anything is to the point you can translate your brain waves into a virtual space. Let's say I'm in vr and I think of a box. That box in my head becomes a box in the space. If I think of a character from a video game. that character model appears in front of me in the space. go even further then that and be able to create real environment's around you by only thinking about it. thinking dark souls? now your environment is majula. I only can hope something like that can happen in my lifetime, but that's aloooot of technological advances before we see something like that

This reminds me of a attraction in a science museum i went It was a room with along tube in the middle, inside the tube there was a ball in the middle Two people sit on opposite sides of the tube and attach the electric-neural-stuff in their foreheads The objective was to stay as calm as possible, and the machine would detect which person was more anxious, and move the ball towards the more anxious person Your goal was to make the ball touch the opposite end where the other person was, and everytime the other person starts getting calmer than you, the ball would change directions I thought it was bullshit at first but after some "matches" i realized it was rly true about the thing to remain calm, it was amazing and rly fun

The brain activity does get noticibly lower when someone falls asleep, however during the rapid eye movement phase which is the dreaming phase, you have a higher activity along with muscle artifacts from your eyes, eyelids and possibly other parts of your body like your forehead, jaw or tounge. He wasnt dreaming during the meditation so my guess is that those artifacts i mentioned were what caused it to think hes not relaxed

During meditation, theta waves are most abundant in the frontal and middle parts of the brain. These types of waves likely originate from a relaxed attention that monitors our inner experiences. Here lies a significant difference between meditation and relaxing. "Previous studies have shown that theta waves indicate deep relaxation and occur more frequently in highly experienced meditation practitioners." So when being in a Theta state, the mind register as very busy, just like being in a REM sleep.

I've worked with EEG before for my thesis, and yes there are issues with resolution. Another potential area it can go into is SSVEP. As I recall, parts of your visual brain has a strange quirk where its electrical signal matches the Hz of whatever's flashing in front of you, so you could theoretically use a variable refresh rate display to be able to tell where a player is concentrating by matching the Hz. The issue is the refresh rate would be restricted by the resonant frequencies you need to tune into to get the SSVEP effect. It's seriously cool though, I definitely recommend people look up SSVEPs. :)
