The Clip

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

We're going to change things up in this little video. We wanted to do an experiment which mimics the effects of grazing on grass regrowth and tells the stockman when and how often he can return to a pasture and improve the range. We're going to revisit this clip a few times but you'll see what happened in just 4 days. As many of you know, we've had quite a bit of rain in the past 3-4 weeks so there is plenty of moisture in the ground. This particular clip is in an area that only gets about 3 hours of sunlight each day. We forgot our thermometer so we weren't able to get a ground temperature but we've been in the 50's for highs and in the 30's for lows. Stay tuned for future updates! I’m excited for this new series of grazing videos from you! Here on the east Coast there’s been lots of info coming out on Regenerative Grazing by guys like Joel Salatin, Gabe Brown, Ray Archuletta, and Greg Judy. I can’t wait to hear your thoughts on that subject from a Cowboy/Rancher point of view.

Always look it as its not about the grazing its about the rest periods, in between the grazing periods. And its what's going on underneath the soil that will determine whats going on above the soil.

What grass species you working with there? Here in the North bay We are trying to get annual Ryegrass to out compete Foxtail and Wild oats. Would prefer Orchardgrass and Perennial ryegrass to annuals but we have 10x the rainfall you get there in the desert.

You mentioned weeds, how do you deal with weeds? Glad you received rain - sure helps the pastures, cause golly, you live in a dry rocky place!

If cattle are in large areas, they wander around and eat what they like best = selective grazing. If you can reduce the area they are in and make the cattle eat what’s there, you will reduce weeds and increase your grasses = intensive grazing. If that’s not an option, you need to get to the weeds early enough when they’re still palatable and hold the cattle in an area that you want to concentrate on.
