The Class of ‘24: Entered College During COVID-19, Graduating Among Protests | Amanpour and Company

The protest movement is sweeping college campuses just weeks before graduation. This year’s graduating class comprises the same group whose high school graduation was disrupted by the COVID pandemic. Wall Street Journal Higher Education Reporter Douglas Belkin talks to Hari Sreenivasan about the unique circumstances facing these students.

This is alarming, but I’m not surprised. Added to this information is the current narrative that challenges whether college is even necessary. Anyone who’s been to college knows that you do lots more technical learning after graduation. However, you really learn social dexterity in college along with the sprouts of knowledge that you’ll need in life. It’s really alarming.

Don't be afraid or hesitant to help your young adult children. The whole "kick the birdie out of the nest" tough love isn't what they need. They already feel alone and abandoned, don't make it worse.

SATs are used based on how much money colleges and testing companies can make off them.

Let's not be so sure they ('24s) entered 'during covid'. I walked in '03, having entered in '78! (The 25-year Plan.) It's like one of my buddies describes " Yeah, the 9th grade was the hardest 3 years of my life."😊

The schools from grade school on have not been upgraded to keep up with technology. We do not value teachers so the best will leave unless it is their calling and they have a partner for living expenses. Schools for two generations have shortened school days eliminated classes and taken away time for in-class learning where kids learn to interact with each other. The worries this guy mentioned started long ago. I am glad more attention is being paid to suicide prevention but suicide attempts is nothing new for college.

Bit patronising to say the least . All these ‘superior intellects’ talking down to the young telling then they are just dysfunctional & not actually emotionally mature enough to feel empathy for others.

Yeah there is a bit of a talking down about this. Its not like everyone everyone wasn't a hot mess in there twenties. Obviously there needs to be a suport system, older adults also need to understand that starting adult life is super expensive now. A 20 something can't afford a house without added help or dome how snagging a nearly 100k income.

"Graduating among protests" seems to purposefully undermine the obvious truth that they are also the same cohort engaging in the protests... its almost as if a cohort of Americans that were denied a basic right of passage in our culture are seeing the denial of basic rights in general to Palestinians and feel empathy towards them because of their experience in not getting to have the HS experience most of us took for granted and the curtailing of rights in the name of public health... instead we get a bunch of boomers trying to lecture these students as if they have some sort of moral high ground while ignoring that student protests have historically been on the right side of history from an ethical standpoint. Amanpour is just another shill for corporate media trying the heard sheep for moneyed interests... These sort of "interviews" are clickbait trash designed to lure centrists towards conservative views... and we can see the logical result of conservativism in the MAGA movement.

So true. It is amazing that boomers who were like we cared and changed the world don’t like criticism aimed towards them. Also who created and increased cell use? Older generations. Also with mental health what are colleges doing to support students? So click bait lecturing.

I rather be part of the peaceful protestors who are asking for a ceasefire, than the protestors of same age but are the agitators and pro Israeli/IDF side. Those pro Palestinians kids, are highly empathetic, I know bc I have a couple of them, lol, but their mental health post covid have been addressed. So this guy is talking way too broadly!

I found the discussion very patronising of the young protesters calling for a cease fire. He looked for every reason why they are behaving the way they are except that they actually care about the brutal and indiscriminate killing of innocent people.
