The Chicago River Tour with Geoffrey Baer
In the epic drama that is Chicago’s history, the Chicago River has played many roles, by turns hero, villain, and underdog. The most iconic river scenes lie near the river’s confluence with Lake Michigan, the junction that gave rise to the city itself, where skyscrapers now exalt the river’s banks and form a spectacular canyon of stunning architecture.

My wife and I did this tour. It was such a beautiful skyline. It' now my favorite US skyline! If Chicago had 4 equal seasons, I'd live there. Its just too cold for too long.
Jeff is an absolute BEAST of a tour guide. Great job bruh!

While I haven't been to every city in the US, Chicago is the most beautiful one in America, the architecture, the river, the lake front with its 26 miles of public parks and beaches is unsurpassed for any city in the world.
Geoffrey, you're the Rick Steves of Chicago. Can you do the history of O'Hare and Midway airport as well as Navy Pier?

Lived here my whole life and still never tire of the views and history all within a days walk along the river front and shoreline. Been on this boat tour many times and it never gets old.
OMG!!! I grew up in Streeterville, by the river (by River East, on East North Water St ), this warms my heart. Thank you so much for sharing this. I looooove Chicago, and I'm so grateful I grew up in such an amazing city. Brought back many memories ❤

It’s my favorite. I’m from Nashville and I currently live in Cincinnati which is pretty much between Chicago and Nashville. I have the best of both worlds now. 😂
I'm a Chicago native daughter, transplanted to California 42 years ago. Thank you for the tour.
I miss Chicago. I grew up there and moved the day after graduation. Thanks for giving me another way of enjoying it.
This guy is the BEST !! I love his tours. Thanks for the great memories. ❤️
Geoffrey Baer’s documentaries are so valuable! Really enjoyable and educational !
I will keep saying it. Chicago is the greatest city in the country if not the world. ❤
Well done! Geoffrey Baer is highly experienced and knowledgeable about Chicago history and architecture having conducted tours since 1988. His tours are informative and lively.

I did the Chicago Architecture River tour in July. It was awesome and full of knowledge. Seeing Chicago from the River is eye opening to say the least. Chicago is unique and the best city in the country.
I respect past leaders of Chicago for their forward looking design and building of the city. It’s beautiful and efficient with world class institutions. The MWRD is best in the world as well as parks and a public shoreline. Culture and education of our state is displayed in Chicago like a fine canvas. There are problems as in any city but it always rises above. The future of the city is outstanding.
Not a dull moment on this tour. I absolutely loved it! Thank you for this!
Loved your film! Born and grew up in Chicago. I left in the sixties and see the amazing development! The early history was something that passed down by grandparents. Thank you for showing me what I missed seeing..
loved weekends trips to Chicago! this was an incredible document
This should have waaay more views than it does. Nice job!
I truly enjoyed the history of Chicago! I have myself been to Chicago and it is a very beautiful city. It made me reflect back on the Trump Tower, the Sears Tower and the gorgeous buildings and infrastructure. Also, I went to a restaurant that was owned by Trump and I remember looking out and all I saw was white buildings…The buildings were so close to one another. I had never seen this before but it had its own beauty. Nonetheless, I was shocked actually to learn about the sewage that went into the river. Can’t even imagine the smell of the runoff from the animals and also the disposing of carcasses… I can’t even fathom the thought of the odour, not to mention the devastating health affects this would have on any human or animal for that matter. Thank you so much! I do appreciate the time that you put in to making this available for us to watch. Respectfully, Susan from Canada…… ps: sad to see how technology has taken away a lot of jobs such as the post office, Sears and The Chicago Tribune…..not to mention many, many more!!…However, in saying this, it is also lovely to see the improvements and to see how they made so many things so very beautiful. As they say, life is ever-changing and so are our surroundings. Cheers!
Geoffrey, My wife hipped me to your Chicago River Tour. What a groovy plethora of destination data.
What a wonderful journey! Thank you for your putting this video together and making it available on KZread.

The commentary is fairly good but slightly arrogant which really comes out when the leftist liberal mr. Barr chooses to trounce on President Trump and his grand Trump Tower which brought much to the property value and tourism to Chicago. Mr Baer is a petty person it is obvious! He ruined his whole documentary being so insulting to our great President!
Oh, your series on the northern Illinois is sòoooo good! I find that I have to view them several times to absorb all the details of the narrative. Thanks for your dedication.
I had a tour 3 yrs ago...can't wait to go back and do it again... We had bought tickets to go back but that's when the 1st covid shut down came,, it was cancel... It's fantastic to know that even when watching a simple documentary or taking a boat tour on the Chicago river you must hear an Oranga Man Bad story.

When? Like 1972-1974? Highest murder rate in Chicago's history?
Born here in 1942, but too deadly and expensive, so at 79, I moved to Queretaro, Mexico
Never been... Great video ✔
I love my city which means good or bad in it should be shown afterall the city of Chicago doesnt end downtown and because a lot of videos about chicago centers in the city very bias to say downtown chicago is the city when it is not notable chicago starts downtown n ends near riverdale illinois but most videos about chicago hide the rest of the city because those in office dont fully take care of the rest of the city but just its focal points that make it money I rest my case who else agree city of chicago can be very beautiful if the labeling of parts stop n we get people in office to make the entire city SAFE not glamorize in over prices of places to live but the number one thing needed SAFE AFFORDABLE BREATHABLE AND NO HOMELESS
How long does the river go on for? This is all so interesting.
Can you talk about Metra and how the system expanded into the suburbs?
I'm a native Chicagoan
The Streeter sandbar --- how far into the Lake was it? Any further than the current edge of the Outer Drive?
Awesome job!! Way to set proper standards. Respectably assert your rights!
You did a pretty good job talking about the beautiful architecture throughout the city and also some of the history of Chicago. So why no mention about the Gangster era and Al Capone?
Thanks for sharing nice video... my friend 👍 Amazing like 💯💯💯 Have a good day~ SingaKorean W

Beautiful. Too bad crime has been creeping closer and closer to downtown. I hope Chicago turns around, because I would love to visit.
Does anybody know the episode that contains the information on the story about this one park designer who got really upset when he visited his park later in life and they had turned it into a zoo and essentially ruined his life’s work
How can i get your tour ? In chicago ? Where comming im july 🤩
Is so Nice 💕
Weird how there were major fires North in Wisconsin same day.
I really want to know why there is so many dislikes for this video. Can anyone shed some light?
Do one on Chicago Ironworkers Local Union 1, please
Hi Geoffrey--I live in San Francisco now(25 years)...are you teaching Theatre at all ?I saw a video of yours 2-3 years ago and wrote you an email hoping you would reply. Chicago has really changed so much since I lived there--such a great update for me. Write me back???!!!!
So, this is the third version of the tour, I mean, the recorded one? Can you post the 20-year old version too?
What I remember about the Chicago river is that it used to run into the Lake, but because all the water supply came from the Lake and toxic waste and sewage was dumped into the Lake, a change was desperately needed. So, they reversed the flow of the river so it could flow inland, taking sewage and contaminants with it. I’m not sure what they’ve done since but hopefully it’s a lot better than the way it started. Where does it go now? How far did they dig a canal to the South? It’s a curious thing that a river runs away from a huge lake, don’t you think?
I swear I thought I saw Mayor Beetle Juice swimming in the lake.
Attractive Chicago cities
The buildings that capture a reflection of the sky, with clouds and blue, absolutely offer a free feeling to the Chicago River and its Urban Reality. They feel like "a breath if fresh air". I would say, Chicago has come a long way and much value has been realized thanks to each Private Patron of their Vision, Time, Financial Gifts, the People of Chicago with their Taxes and observant attention, and Countless City Workers, Politicians, and Others that remain unknown by the Masses but help give the City its Beautiful Skyline and Pedestrian experiences. I applaud the City Council for their response to "labeling buildings", however I feel they should have the Trump Letters removed, as it was not requested nor approved by the City. Clearly it is undesired and the Building must be made to comply. Children that aren't corrected and made to comply, grow in to Adults whom behave the same. At some point someone must say "No means No" and enforce it. It was really an "in your face Chicago".
