I bought a Glarry P Bass early last year in Blue Burst, mostly out of curiosity. I found that the pickup it came with were a bit on the quiet side, but sounded pretty decent with a preamp pedal. I ended up modding it, by changing out the pickups with Guitar Fetish Kwik Plug PATs, and GF electronics, (the tone potentiometer had some crunch to it). The pots were basic cheap dime pots, and GF's pots are alpha pots. I also added a high mass bridge and replaced the strings with Ernie Ball Slinky Cobalt Flat Wounds. I also lowered, straigtened neck just a little (didn't need too much), and dressed the frets (a bit spikey out of the box). Now it sounds pretty good. One thing of note though is that a standard pick guard will not fit on the Glarry. I ordered a white pearl pick guard, because I though it would look good on the dark blue, but the curved end that holds the knobs is about a quarter of an inch curved in torwards the bridge, so the new pick guard didn't fit. Was a little dissapointed with that, but it's only cosmetic, so I moved on.

I bought a guitar on ebay for $66.00 US. It was a PJ style Bass and made of all the same things this is made of. VERY LIGHT in the body. I took the bass apart. Fixed all the little flaw, dropped some New SPB-3 Duncans, changed the bridge to the heavier Hipshot 4. Changed over the tuning keys as well as all electronics, knobs, brass nut and such. But the Bass now balances out very well by putting that Hipshot on it. It now plays awesome!

just to contrast this one with my cheap bass, I bought a 200 dollar Squier P bass from Sweetwater. It had a straight neck, no sprout, and was inspected. Was over the moon with how the bass came to me for how much I paid for it. You can go cheap and not sacrifice much in terms of quality, you just have to be prepared to possibly pay additional for a set up.

Regarding the bass, I'm a guitar player who wants to learn bass but not sure if I'll like it or not. I keep wavering on how much to spend. What I DONT want is a neck that feels way different than a nice Fender P or J bass so I'm glad you've mentioned this one is chunky. I'll keep looking, thanks!

Granted, I'm going to suck as a bassist for a while. I'll need a proper bassist to track for me in the final product. Metal band, so I want it done right. You wouldn't happen to know anyone who missed out on being in an 80s metal band, would you? ;) I'm more of a rock/djent vibe, probably, but it comes from the same place.

I have three Glarry ones. One Precision, one Jazz and a Stratocaster guitar. For the price... Solid construction, nice finish, real twins-clones of a REGULAR Fender (not a special edition). All you have to do is to change the pick-ups and strings. The Glarry sounds good but... I put Wilkinson pickups 25$ and Ernie Ball strings 25$. And because i've opened them, i shielded them with copper tape 15$ even if they don't make noise. The result is awsome and even a Fender won't sound and look better. So all in all it is a 200$ bass or guitar. Try them!

I'm going to order one. I have the S type guitar and the neck it came with was arrow straight and only needed the saddles lowered - the action is now lower than most of my Fender Strats and it plays great. Yes I needed to finish sand the neck but it's now as smooth as silk. The "tremelo' was easy to set up either floating to Fender standards for vintage saddles or resting against the body. The worst parts on mine are the tuners and the P"ups. Actually they are not too bad as it stays in tune and the P'ups sound like one of the thinner sounds of my collection but I have a set of Texas Specials sitting around doing nothing. I found the tuners difficult on string change because of apparently a hollow stem. After that I may change the bridge. I only have one Bass which is one of the better Squier range and its neck has a bunch of dead spots that I have been unable to cure.. You've got to be careful on parts spend because the set of tuners I want to use on the guitar cost more than the cost of the whole guitar! I like the Glarry headstock shape by the way and do prefer chunkier necks both for my hands (XL) and the tone it brings (and maybe why there is a lack of dead spots, query)? These prices are also good for those who want to learn set up procedure without worrying about messing up your favourite piece. Best, Pete.

He he he... I got exact the same one, in November 2019. Actually I ordered two of them, one for a friend as a Christmas present. He wanted to start playing bass again after 25 years. He quit playing bass because of the kids they had back then. He asked me, if I could repair his old Bass, what I did. Waiting for some original parts I told him that I have some surprise for Christmas. Ok, so two of the exact same basses as yours arrived. Except the yellow on mine comes as seen in the catalogue. It is really, really light, the finish and hardware is decent, looks good, but you feel it is a cheap bass. The fretts had some sprout. The neck profile comes near to the one on my made in 1964 Precision bass. The action was pretty high. I did a setup, filed down the frettends, used some steelwool on the rough neck - and now it is a decent bass that stays in tune. It stays in the rehearsal room, so that I don't have to go home first when I run out of time before rehearsal. It was € 88,-- shipped to Germany from a depot in Great Britain. Do I recommend the bass? Well, if you need a cheap Precision Bass, maybe as a project platform, or if you want to have something that stays in the rehearsal room, for you or for students, that doesen't burn a hole in your pocket when it gets stolen, and if you like chunky necks, we don't have to think twice for the price. I can't say anything particularly bad or negative about the bass. I have to admit that it has quite low output Pickups, but for this you have the gain knob on your amp. The tone is nice, like a Precision Bass.

I figured it came without a gig bag because it's for a guitar player to leave at home next to the amp for in case you need to rip out a bass line now and then. I'm not man enough to really play much bass but I have a Squier that I use like that. At Glarry prices, I am sorta tempted by the school bus yellow. 😸

They are cheeeap quality. I have the Glarry Jazz version. Lots a work later and its better but... results may vary. If this was my beginner bass, I would be frustrated in its playability. Although, Like Phillip said, a good bass to learn how to do work on an instrument with. Practiced sanding a neck, shimming a neck, set up, filing a nut down (along with removing and re-gluing a nut). I ended up cracking the fret board in front of the nut. It still works and plays fine. I'm glad I could use this bass as a platform to experiment on.

I cannot believe that about two hours ago I was searching "cheapest bass" on KZread and now this video has popped up. Good work Phillip!

As a guitar player who never owned or played a bass I was very happy with the 3color burst one I got for $68 delivered, neck is fat but that is what I prefer, my fret ends were fine, except for one minor finish flaw it came perfect for me . Great review as always Phil ! 👍

Some nice little bass chops there Phil, its an ok starter bass for a newbie sounds decent enough, just a little bit of a growl

I have not played one. From what I have seen and read, I like Glarry guitars. They include free shipping. The prices on their Telecasters has been creeping up. A good setup and a little care, these can be good instruments. I love light weight guitars. Perhaps basswood. Fender even makes some instruments in India. I do not like the old style tuners. The modern, smaller bass tuners are more accurate.

I would like it if you gave it a good setup and tell us what you think afterwards. I think it would be a great bass to give to a student as part of a lesson package. Thanks Phillip !! Your awesome.

Love your reviews of all instruments. I just saw a review of a Firefly 338 after 2 years (GuitarMAX and $159)). I would be very interested in your opinion of Firefly guitars. I'm a newbee and can't really afford better.

Man, Phil, great vid. I have been wanting to learn to play bass but I am guitar broke now. I could trade one of my axes I just don't have anything I am willing to get rid of now. (For instance, I have two identical Guild acoustics and, dammit, I want to keep them both). $80.00 is a cheap date, and if it ain't for me I could always give it to some kid and make his day!

You could really make this a nice beginner bass with a little money, some elbow grease, and a setup. Too bad the neck is so thick though, I would have bought one for my daughter.

There is nothing wrong with a bass or a guitar that is this cheap. I’m sure it is functional. However, I would advise a beginner student to get a guitar or bass such as a Jay Turser. The fretwork it far better for about 30 to 50 dollars more.
