This is my old plow truck!! I paid $700 for it and use it to plow at incredible Auto Sales in Bountiful UT. Power steering didn't work as the seals were bad in the steering box (the leak seemed to get progressively worse every year). I used it for about 5 years a few times each season and then ended up replacing it with a powerstroke diesel with a plow blade I picked up at Manheim Auto Auction. One of my former coworkers sent me the link to this video and it gives me a warm fuzzy feeling knowing that this truck lives on!

That is so cool! I bought a 1990 Chevy pickup with plow. It came with the original window sticker. I may surprise the original owner (I'm the 3rd owner) to let him know his former truck is still running well and working hard.

My dad use to do snow plowing for winter income. He built a rectangle plywood box the width of the truck bed and he filled it with gravel and sand to weigh the truck down. Also if it got stuck he would keep a shovel in the back of the truck to shovel out some of the sand and gravel to throw under the tires for traction. Maybe this will help you some??? We called it the coffin box lol because that's what it looked like. It worked though.

Sitting in my '75 C-20 Custom Deluxe Camper Special watching this. Saying thank you for keeping the '75 alive and you know once you have them running and little things worked out nothing works and takes the abuse like a old square body Chevy truck. And having room for the dog is always a plus. Went 13 years with a 120 lb female red nose american pit bull terrier giving me the honor of driving her around in her truck. The C-20 and two silveraydo extend cabs so she had a seat of her own. Always her trucks I was just the chauffeur.

Looks like you have a great truck for the job. If I may throw my two cents in, I know the tire chains make the world of difference. But I would also build a wooden box in the back and fill it with sand. That way you have some weight which will help with traction, plus if you do happen to get stuck, a little sand will usually go a long way.

I haven’t been keeping up with your videos, so if this comment does not apply forgive me. If you still have the backhoe keep an eye out over the summer for a used push box for it. It attaches to the bucket up chains, you can go up to 16’ with that. It would help keep the road open wide enough for two cars and do it in the same time as the truck. Please don’t get me wrong I plow with both trucks and tractors and they each have their place. You could get a push box a lot cheaper then rebuilding that truck. Just a thought, love your videos and keep up the hard work.

I have had to plow snow ever since I bought my house.....one thing you should ALWAYS, ALWAYS do while plowing......Wear Your Seat Belt. You never know what hidden treasure will be under the snow that will launch you into the windshield. Could be a big chunk of frozen compacted snow stuck to the ground.....who knows. Of course, it took me once to figure that out.....the seat belt has saved me from several launchings.

I practice the opposite, the second I pull up to my site my seat belt comes off. I now drive a newer plow truck though '16 f350. In the newer trucks the seat belt locks up so much it will sore your colar bone. Ill never forget my first time plowing my pops in his 83 ford, he hit a curb going 25 and i smashed that windshield hard haha!

Its funny you mention this, back when we lived off grid I was using a truck much like the one in the video to plow snow. One night while plowing about 12 inches of fresh snow off the road I wound up going over the side, fortunately the road had a 90degree dog leg below me so I was able to just cut straight down the hillside and meet up with the road about 200 yards below, or at least that was my thought. Off the road the snow was about 3-4 feet deep, so I just lowered the plow to about 8 inches off the ground and floored it hoping to get to the lower road, so much snow was coming over the hood I had to stick my head out the drivers window to even have a chance of seeing anything. Well I had forgot we had cut down a couple trees on that hillside a couple years prior and sure enough going about 25-20mph I found one of the stumps. I smashed my face so hard into that bar for the wing window I thought for sure I was going to get knocked completely out. That whole fiasco wound up being an all night episode digging that truck out by hand... Face and nose pounding the whole time lol... Ahh the good ole days.

Tractors have their place when plowing snow. They are good in parking lots because of their maneuverability or when you have to pile the snow up, but they can be slow. For places where you need speed like your road, nothing beats a pickup IMHO. Great video.

@Derek Charette the simplicity of these old trucks is what I like about them. With a sound engine, tranny and frame, there's not much that can go wrong with them that you can't fix pretty cheap. I personally wouldnt get anything that is falling apart to begin with so to avoid major problems. Beyond that, a thorough going over and tuneup should usually put them right back on the road. And if I could only drive my trucks on Sundays I'd be out of business.

I know you are probably getting tons of advice but here goes mine: Fabricating some extensions (wings) to the plow may help with clearing a wider path more easily. More aggressive off-road treads on the tires may assist with the grip...as would extra weight in the bed of the truck. Customizing the tire chains to fit those particular wheels should help mitigate some of the danger of chain damage.

Having plowed a few long driveways, I'll offer this: Use one of your machines to make a few push-outs along your road so you can dump the snow off when you're plowing. A wet heavy snow or two will make you appreciate them. Watch your frame, too- those square body Chevys are notorious for breaking the frame at the steering box, especially with snowplows or oversize tires; there are cheap reinforcement brackets that will save it, if yours hasn't cracked yet, and if you're replacing your steering box, that's the perfect time to inspect it closely. Chaining up all around won't hurt you a bit as long as you're not running around on pavement all the time.

Get 3 55 gallon drums, plastic, and lay then down in the bed with the bungs on top and bottom. Fill them 3/4 full of water and let them freeze up, 120 gallons of water x ~8lbs a gallon, 960 lbs weight in the bed! put them all the way up in the nose of the bed, toss a strap over the top to the underside the top bed rails, and you'll be in great shape weight wise! Spring comes, take out the bottom bungs and let it all drain out... Great job with the truck!

add a couple hundred pounds to bed of the truck and it should plow even easier. make that weight sand and salt and you can fix those ice patches that will show up. As Brian the gamer noted you don't leave salt or melt on any road surface. The icy spot can be treated with sand to make traction. You can also apply salt(melt) and soften the patch then shovel or loader remove and dispose of the icy mess. (thanks for the reminder Brian !)

Look at a U-pull it junk yard if you have any around there. You'll get a good used steering box dirt cheap. Along with many other parts. Really like your Ford too. Old trucks just rock! Take it or leave it, But I would recommend to push the snow down hill. Make your first pass on the uphill side angling the blade to the down hill side so you keep pushing it away from the uphill side of the road. The more snow you get, the less room you will have on the uphill side once it starts pilling up... This is from a 20 year snowplower guy in Chicago... :) Happy Plowing!

I thought that truck was going to be a big help the moment I saw it. Break downs can be crippling for some people but you make it a better vehicle. Good job. You should not have to ask for donations from the neighbors that this will help out. They will hopefully find a way to show their appreciation. Of coarse a little money would go a long way to help maintain and repair this truck.

boy according to the weather man you guy's are going to get hit pretty hard for the next few days. and remember when plowing that snow likes to blow and drift in the low spots so you might want to throw the snow all to one side instead of both sides in some parts of your road. In parts of Wyoming they use a bulldozer with a big V-plow to plow beside the highways in someof sections where the wind blows and drifts the snow so that the snow blows in the place that the dozer plowed instead of blowing over the road. good luck with the plow Heath! Definitely a win for you on the plow truck! honestly for what you paid you got just the plow for less than half price, you done very well!

I would add 4-6" to the side of the plow that you usually angle it towards. Without it , on that narrow plow you wheels are right on the snow bank. A piece of old conveyor belt bolted on top of the plow will keep a lot of the slop off the windshield. 1000 lbs in the bed will help immensely with traction.

One thing you will run into is the snow banks will become larger and larger shrinking the size of the road again so might need to team up with the neighbor to clear pull over spots or even shift an entire snow bank into piles where you have space by the road. The good news is the larger the piles of snow you make in the winter the longer the area down hill of it will have water in the spring/summer as it melts.

Also make sure the paint on the plow is an oil base when you do paint it. It will not stick to the plow when you push it.

some tips for you as a thank you for good and fun videos. take and weld about 40-50cm extra iron to the plow and pipe or similar to support the extension. and cut off a rim of the outer edge of the plate so that you get a half-moon shape. It should keep the sides of the snow edge lower and give more surface space to the snow so that it flies / is thrown out further to the side.✌️☺️

at this point i'd have to say " Old snow plow is better than No snow plow" and those old Chevy parts should be easy to find in an old farming area like that. good for you for having the knowledge and talent and patience to make it happen. that's a trait or skill that's fading fast in this society. please pass that on to your Sons. my Dad knew i wasn't going to be a brain surgeon so, he made sure i could fix darn near anything and work well with my hands. i worked in the trades and in the oilfields and now a Gunsmith never regretted not going to college. i've always made good money with just the little education i've had.

So much of education is just a piece of paper. The actual jobs you get with these degrees can many times be learned with on the job training with no need for a degree. That's just how life works. Observe, obsorb then do. Experience is where the actual learning happens much of the time.

@@jamesnm21 very true indeed. i have a Son who wanted to be a Rocket engineer. spent 4. years in college and 120k later he is a Rocket Engineer. all the while hoping to be working for NASA etc. someday. the Rocket program is basically no more these days and now he works for VA as a purchaser where his degree does him no good and now has to go back to college to get a business degree to get promoted within the VA spending more money on education he'll never be able to pay off. a stupid vicious circle our youth have been saddled with. that paper means nothing to me, either you can do the job or not.

I have been plowing snow with my 76 ford 3/4 ton for years and learned to only chain the front. might not be good for it but 12 years later i have never had an issue. I'm in my truck about 2000 and it works just fine. I can tell you from running a v-plow it is not worth the money. you can do just about the same job for less. I run an old meyer e-47 and it is fantastic. good luck and great content.
