He will and always be one of greats game show hosts.
This show definitely deserves another chance. I like the very recent (at the time of taping, of course) current event questions.
The 3-alike siren was also used on Caesar's Challenge when the Lucky Slot was hit.
Charley Horan was a contestant on “Jeopardy!” in October 1989 and did quite nicely winning 3 games.

You can watch his 2nd, 3rd and 4th games on my dailymotion channel and see if you can do as well or better as him.

I never thought Charley and Toni were dumb, they just had a bad day at the office, Charley did fine in the sprint round,
I agree. I enjoyed it, and wished it could have lasted longer.
WBZ [Boston] aired this show
this was a great game show
Pretty cool Gameshow. I'm suprised i never saw this game. I Graduated in 1990.
Note how at 0:32, Don Morrow speaks Dick Clark's name with an echo effect- not only was this not used for any other episodes, but it was also something he used in his previous announcing job- the last season of NBC's Sale of the Century, after Jay Stewart was fired.

@@rodspence472 He was 93. Almost 30 years before The Challengers, Don was a game show host himself. He hosted Camouflage, a show I remember, in 1961 and 1962.

Why was Jay fired?
The set had a similar layout to Jeopardy!

Both taped at Hollywood Center Studios at this time, along with TTD 90 and the Quiz Kids Challenge. Perhaps they shared a soundstage? Also, I think this show got a lot of criticism (critica calling it a knock-off of J!). This was a great show that unfortunately didn't survive the mass tsunami of game shows in 1991 (after hope for reviving the genre the previous fall).

One of the Few Game Shows to Have a 16 Screen Video Wall. Others Include the 1990 Version of LET’S MAKE A DEAL, The 1994 Syndicated Version of THE PRICE IS RIGHT, and the Nickelodeon Game Show GET THE PICTURE
The sneak preview aired the Friday before.
Ah yes, the 90s. When commercials were actually less than 3 minutes!
This show was a nice antidote to Jeopardy! The current events angle forced you to pay attention to the world and not just be a trivia god. And if you remember what Jeopardy! was like back then, it was stern, daunting, and not very entertaining. The Challengers was a lighter show, but still a difficult quiz. It should have been a big hit.
I remember doak being on 20/20 in 2000 i it was
This was an uncredited remake of THE WHO, WHAT, OR WHERE GAME from the early1970, which IIRC is gone forever.

And not to mention that the game was played differently. They should've kept the gameplay the same. Starting with $1000 or $1250 & betting $50, $100, $150 & so on through $500 & having the player who bet the most answer if more than 1 selected the same question.

I did the math, he could have won as much as $51,600 by going all in on each question.
It's Great Really Great!
According to findings on line my local CBS affiliate here in Kansas City, KCTV, carried this at 3 PM weekday afternoons following “Guiding Light“. Shame it only lasted a year.
it's because later in the run they knock the payoffs down to 100/150/200 and 200/300/400 in the main game.
doak was on 20/20 in 2000 I think

Dick Clark rip!
Technically, West Germany wouldn't participate in the 1994 World Cup as exactly one month after this episode aired, it reunified with East Germany.

Dick Clark, you will be missed. (1929-2012) So long (salutes).
This looked liked a Jeopardy! knock-off

Actually it's a knock-off of "The Who What or Where Game", another Ron Greenberg Production. "The 3 W's" has 1 episode here on KZread. That show actually followed the original "Jeopardy!" with Art Fleming on NBC....a 1-2 quiz punch.
Was there ever an ultimate challenge winner. I can't remember if there was or not.
Which Cleveland local station aired the challengers?
That's from September 3, 1990 James.
WNBC NY?
Little wonder this show ran only one season-THEY WOULDN'T LEAVE IT ALONE!! WHY?!? It seemed like they changed the format or the scoring or SOMETHING about it every two weeks or so. Then they have the gall to wonder why it couldn't find an audience. What a waste.

I think that was out of desperation to get the ratings up, they taped the shows the Friday before they aired so they saw the results pretty much instantly.
IN STEREO!
My Grandma used 2 watch this back in the day.
@Jessyleppert *fixes and smacks my* as Cheif Ramsey: WAKE UP DONKEY! me: YES CHEIF!
I agree. Stupid, stupid answer.
Wow, sexist much?
How did he miss the Chicago Cubs question. If any man misses a sports question thats easy as hell, your either gay or dead.
