Brilliant Gameshow with The Late Paul Daniels. I remember watching this show when I was a kid as well as his Magic Show and Wipeout they were great. I hope Challenge will Show Every Second Counts one day I remember when it was repeated around Summer 1998 I think when I was at High School I recorded it and watched when I came home and during the summer before my holiday to Florida. Paul was a Great Man. He will be missed. RIP Paul Daniels.

Love the theme music from this show - used to watch it all the time when I was younger. Wasn't it repeated on BBC1 during lunchtimes about 10 years ago? R.I.P Paul - thank you so much for everything.

This show was actually based on an American show of the same name. It aired in syndication from September 1984 to September 1985, and was hosted by comedian Bill Rafferty. I believe there's at least a couple of American episodes on KZread somewhere.

I got to see our version once at my uncle's house in NH. I'm from RI, and none of our stations picked it up. A great format, and Bill was a terrific host. We lost Bill way too soon.

I'm suspicious that Paul may have had a little wager with some of the crew, as to how many times he could get away with saying "very nice" during the opening segment.

The BBC were always limited in what they could give away in prizes as all of these game shows were funded by public money. ITV could give away much better prizes and cash because they were a commercial channel.

Was this the first BBC game show to offer cash prizes? If not, then what was the first BBC game show to offer cash prizes since Take Your Pick (the first game show on British television to offer cash prizes) first premiered on ITV?

I think you might be right - there were plenty of ITV shows around at the time, but not much on BBC. There was "The Generation Game", but I don't think there were any cash incentives on this show.

Neil Shorter I think so too because the previous show that Paul did before this one, Odd One Out (based on the short-lived U.S. game show Knockout) didn't have cash prizes, nor did Get Set Go (based on the short-lived U.S. game show Go) hosted by Michael Barrymore.

Neil Shorter And I just realized that the first BBC game show to give away cash prizes was actually Bob's Full House because if you remember in the Gold Card bonus round, each correct answer was worth the number of pounds equal to the number the player chose on the board. But I still think that Odd One Out and Get Set Go didn't give away cash prizes, is that correct?

  • @neilshorter2407

Andrew Hain In the Gold Card round, the winning contestant faced a board of 18 squares with numbers from 1 - 60 under each, and stars on some. The winning contestant had 60 seconds to answer a series of questions. Each correct answer chose one of the numbers and earned that number in pounds. Behind some of the numbers were letters in the name of a holiday, and if the contestant can reveal all the letters before the time ran out, he/she won the holiday.
