The Emperor was played by respected Turkish actor Turhan Bey, so they just named him Turhan.

Similarly, Prime Minister Malachi was named after the actor playing him, Malachi Throne.

You know, given how important a plot element the four telepaths are in this episode, it’s weird we don’t see them with subsequent Centauri emperors. I guess I could chalk it up to Cartagena being a lunatic and things having gone to shit by the time Londo is in charge.

It was later changed, but it was said Cartagia had them executed as a favour to Mr Morden as telepaths are a weapon against the Shadows. Later fiction said they were still alive only sent away in Centauri space.

I imagine that the Drakh wouldn't want the Telepaths around Lando either; they might sense the Keeper and tell others that the Emperor was being puppeted.

From what I remember, the Emperor Cartagia had them executed because he feared they would see inside his head. I wouldn't be surprised if Morden didn't instigate it as well so the Shadows and their Drakh allies would be able to infiltrate the Royal Palace with ease.

This episode set into motion all the dirty tricks that Refa, Mollari, and Morden had set into motion. Vir Cotto knew all this and it began to change him into the good Centauri Emperor that Vir will become.

There's arguments either way. The modern approach allows for much higher per episode budgets (which many episodes of babylon 5 would have massively benefited from and great shows like the expense just wouldn't be possible without) and although I'd have difficulty for babylon 5,: there's a lot of shows (particular the trek shows) which had a lot of "filler" episodes (where the crew had clearly run out of either budget or ideas for the season and were bulking it out). The real problem is that very few shows are taking advantage of the flexibility of modern TV - now everything is on streaming services shows can stretch a season for greater depth when they don't need the budget, or sacrifice a few episodes when they do. But for some daft reason everyone seems to be stubbornly sticking to the more or less the same old miniseries length.

@@pioneer_1148 Yeah I'm aware. However many of those "filler" episodes were some of the best star trek episodes made. Most people didn't watch trek or B5 for the big shiny battle scenes, those were usually a treat we got a few times a season. Lets look at the TNG episode "measure of a man" as an example. One of the best episodes of star trek period and they sat in a room talking the whole time. The acting and dialogue made the episode and helped the fans connect and become invested in the characters more. The two highest rated episodes of DS9 were also people sitting in a room talking, "deut" and "in the pale moonlight". Having 20+ episodes allowed time for character development and world building so the fans become invested in the characters and the world, something most modern shows do not have. Especially original ones that have to write their own story and build their own world as they go. Let's look at star trek discovery. I'd be happy to get 10 "filler" episodes added on each season where we have the time to get to know individual characters.

We see just how far G'kar has to go, as he dismisses the complete lack of blood on Turhan's hands as a 'technicality' as if children are responsible for the actions of their parents. It raises the question to me, was there any world where Turhan could have made his apology to G'kar, or would G'kar have just stabbed him before he could? Was his death doomed to start a war he never wanted no matter what he did? So many acted like the Centauri had become a weakened joke in the early years... I wonder if anyone ever looked back and realised how hard Turhan and Malachi were working to restrain the warhawks all those years...

I think the war was inevitable, regardless of whether or not this particular act of forgiveness would've succeeded. As we know, the older powers were already putting their pieces into motion, setting the lesser races on a path to fight against each other to demonstrate who's philosophy was superior, so even if the Centauri and Narn peoples had come to a peace accord of some kind, the Shadows/Vorlons would've found a way to disrupt it. By the time of the first episode of the series, you could argue it was already far too late to stop the inertia, but fortunately enough people grew in the right ways to make sure that the lesser races turned it on the greater ones and cleared the board so that they could exist free of external influence. That basically all the major powers banded together for the most part after the Shadow War ended demonstrates what would've or could've happened if there hadn't been an outside hand.

Another interesting thing about this scene thats well played by the actors is the moment they say goodbye, I dont know if it was intentional but the emotion they put into the moment both in their voices and their actions seems to be as if the characters are saying goodbye permanently as if they know this is the last time they will see each other alive. a truth as it would turn out.
