The Catcher in the Rye by J. D. Salinger chapter 17 - Audiobook

Ойын-сауық

The Catcher in the Rye, by J. D. Salinger, chapter 17, narrated by Isaac Birchall
At 2 o’clock, Holden goes to meet Sally at the Blitmore Hotel, she is late, but looks great, so he forgives her immediately. They make out in the cab on the way to the show. The actors annoy holden at the show, because like Ernie at the piano, they are almost too good at what they do, and come across as arrogant. During the break, Sally annoys Holden by flirting with a guy from Andover, another Prep school, but he agrees to take her ice skating at radio city after the show. They take a break from skating and sit inside and Holden begins to unwind. Go switches on a dime between yelling a whispering, he rants about the phonies at his school and in New York. He becomes even crazier saying that he and sally should run away together and get married away from society and live on their own in a cabin. When she calls him out on his insanity, he becomes more and more annoyed, and the fight builds until he calls her a “Royal pain in the ass”. She starts to cry and he tries apologising like a mad man, but sally is upset, and he finally leaves without her.

My current running theory is that Holden has bipolar disorder. The way he flips from being so passionate to depressed in a blink of an eye really causes one to think. Just a thought tho

I am not skilled enough in literature or psychology to give an answer to this, but there are quite a few analyses on Holden's mental health out there if you want to have a deep dive

Man, I felt that when she said "Stop yelling!" I have the same damn problem when I am using my "normal" voice. People treating me like I'm the goddamn Dragonborn or something, because you know, I'm like shouting to them.

You're welcome 😊 It is a weird book, and I am rather glad that I didn't have to read it in school. I understand why it is on the reading list, but I'm not a huge fan. Glad I can help you get through :) :D

Yes. In this chapter Holden is more than just an angst teenager. It surpasses that. He’s got issues! And yes, I think his future doesn’t look bright. He is terribly insecure but lashes out on others. I see psychiatric medications in his future. Any sympathy I had for him in the last few chapters was blown away with this chapter. Good job reading!

Oh yeah, I had such a hard time reading it. I thought that I was starting to like Holden the tiniest bit, but after this one, all of that sentiment left my body

I disagree. I am a teenage boy and I feel the same way. I am sick of the world I live in some times and want to go somewhere new. He opened up to her and it’s hard for him to do that. So when she wasn’t completely on board he felt horrible.
