And the most important call is the radio call: OWENS! OWENS! OWENS! HE CAUGHT IT! HE CAUGHT IT! HE CAUGHT IT! and the bit where he said (paraphrasing from memory) "He hasn't held onto anything today, including his own fingers!" This is where Owens became T.O., and NOT from a dominant performance, but from a single catch after so many drops. Young told the story after T.O.'s last drop, when he came back to the huddle, Owens begged Young not to give up on him. Young said in an interview that of course he wouldn't... Owens was the most physically dominant and imposing WR he had ever seen or been blessed to have played with.

Owens dropped/fumbled every single pass (except one) before The Catch, it was a huge redemption for him as Jerry started to regress. Garrison Hearst would injure his leg the next game, and didn't play until 2001 and his career barely continued for 5 years. This also was Steve Young's last playoff win.

Had pretty good adversity and still won out, he definitely retires by 2004, with Aikman a year before him. This game is a classic because of what happened with Terrell Owens and the Jerry Rice fumble and as a 49er fan yes he did fumble the ball... but what people don't remember is that the games in the playoffs against the Packers.. there were two fumbles on the Packers side that would have changed momentum and changed the game in favor of the 49ers but they called it that the backers didn't fumble the ball... so really it evened out because every play if football especially in the playoffs in the Super Bowl every play counts and that's why football is a game of inches

@@LissaBroyles EXACTLY. I get so tired of Packer fans saying they got screwed in this game, yet act like we didn't get screwed 3 times over the last 2 games before that. It's so hypocritical. It's like a bad call in their favor is ok, but a bad call against them is not. At the end of the day, a bad call is a bad call. Call it like it is. I'm not going to act like Rice didn't fumble because he did, but to me it evens out because the Packers got away with calls even worse, so why whine about it? Even if the Packers did win that game, they weren't going to the Super Bowl anyway, unlike the 49ers in 97 who would have had the game been called fairly. Whether they would have beaten the Broncos in SB32 is unclear. I believe they could have, but with all the injuries the 49ers had at that moment, I don't believe they would have won by much. They were clearly wounded at that point. No Jerry Rice, no Brent Jones. Gary Plummer basically in alot of pain and holding on by sheer will. It would have been a more defensive game since we had the league's top ranked run defense, so no way Terrell Davis runs over us like he did against the Packers. John Elway would've had to carry the team to victory instead. Maybe that's why they screwed the 49ers from going to the Super Bowl that year because we would've had a better shot at beating Denver. -.-

BTW anyone crying about the fumble on Jerry Rice, well the Packers get away with some calls against the 49ers in that decade. I remember vividly in 1996 on MNF Don Beebe getting touched by Marquez Pope on a pass when he fell to the ground after a catch, but the official didn't see it, and Beebe raced to the endzone like 50 yards for a cheap score. That was a tight game that went to overtime, and the 49ers lost. They could have easily won that game if not for the error, and finish 13-3 over the Packers 13-3, giving them the NFC West title over 12-4 Carolina, and a first round bye. Instead they had to play in the wild card, where Steve Young messed up his ribs, and then travel to Green Bay where Young barely played before having to be replaced by Elvis Grbac.

This game wound up being the end of two eras. For the Packers, the loss meant the departure of both Mike Holmgren (who took the job in Seattle) and Reggie White (who retired, but came back out of retirement a year later to play a season with the Panthers). For the 49ers, it was Steve Young's final playoff win, as Young would see his career end next season when he was knocked out by Aeneas Williams. After having represented the NFC in three of the previous four Super Bowls, neither the Packers nor the 49ers would make it to the Super Bowl again for twelve years. On a side note: the result of this game also gave the Eagles their next head coach. Andy Reid was on the Packers staff, and Reid himself believed the Eagles wouldn't have been able to wait another week to hire, so had the Packers won, the Eagles may have gone with another candidate. The Packers would actually hire the Eagles' recently fired head coach Ray Rhodes to coach them, but he'd only last one season in Green Bay before being replaced by Mike Sherman.

Nice. I didn't think you would do this one since it wasn't a championship game. This game was one of my favorite memories watching football. To finally get over the Packers after 3 straight playoff losses, and 5 straight losses in 4 years total, it was an awesome feeling. Even though the 49ers were eliminated the following week in Atlanta, beating Green Bay didn't make it sting so bad. The only thing that sucked was that this was the last gasp of the glory years. Thank you for profiling this game. I hope the 49ers get to the Super Bowl this weekend. I still hate Green Bay lol.

Nasty missed call that cost the packers the game down the stretch when the ball came lose before Rice knee touch the ground, and who would of thought that Owens would have had such humbling beginnings, even down to his sentimental game winning touchdown for redemption that seem to had propel the rest of his career.

Better yet, the NFC Championship Game when the Niners chewed the Packers up on the ground. Rodgers is a good stat sheet stuffer, but his record in playoff games outside the friendly confines of the NFC North...not good. 1-4 in conference championships.
