Everything about this short is brilliant. The on-point dark humor, the music. Everything. Cartoons now rely on too much swearing or being vulgar to be “edgy”. They need lessons from the writers/directors from this short. That rat blowing out the lighter was the chef’s kiss.

Nostalgia's a hell of a drug. Half the world thinks "cartoons these days" are too tame and they could never get away with Looney Tunes antics, and the other half.. This short is from 1988, the Garbage Pail Kids cartoon was in '87. For reference, Ren & Stimpy was '91. There has always been good animation, there has always been bad animation, and the difference has always been largely subjective.

@@PopeCocksmoker the ’80s to ’90s had great toons. The new stuff I see online just makes me cringe. Must be AI writing. Lol. But I get about shows being subjective.

The film garnered over 15 awards, including a Genie Award for Best Animated Short, as well as an Academy Award nomination. It was also chosen for inclusion in animation historian Jerry Beck's 50 Greatest Cartoons, placing at #32. It was also included in the Animation Show of Shows.

After all these years, I didn't realize how dark this was.

An absolute classic. Still holds up to this day.

I can't remember if I saw this on Nickelodeon as a kid back in the late 80s early 90s but I remember seeing it almost daily and loved it.

I remember seeing it on Nickelodeon, on a TV show of shorts and clips. Turkey TV or something. Came on after "You can't do that on television!" I wish they would run OG Nickelodeon shows from the early 80s

They used to play this every morning before the start of ROM (Royal Ontario Museum) summer camp. At the time I was pretty annoyed hearing it every day, but now this brings back nostalgic feelings and memories every time I watch it. Anyone else have the same experience?

In the early - mid 90s, late Sunday night, Cartoon Network had two of my favorite shows, "O Canada" and "Late Night Black and White." I remember seeing this on "O Canada" and never forgot about it. I'm glad this is on KZread. I wish Cartoon Network would bring back those two shows. I loved the Canadian cartoons and I always loved the old, hand drawn black and white cartoons.

Wow found this again! My cousin showed me this on satellite on a show I believe was called O Canada many years ago.

Best version so far. Macabre and Funny.

Gave me nighmares for weeks when I was a kid. I´m 28 now

The cat just thought, the man was playing with him.

I like that there are woman tied to the railroad tracks a nice refference to Dudley Do Right and Snidley Whiplash.

Takes me back to my early childhood years. I wish they could have made them co-exist I mean Toonami, Adult Swim, Cartoon Network rolled up as one. I know Netflix and chunchyroll is king now and cable is legacy media but still think it would be cool :(
