@@johnlim3357 From my understanding, OP did not mean that he plays like a machine. I believe what he emphasized was that he plays very controlled, very masterfully. Similar to the way that machines perform tasks very easily, I think that OP was trying to say that Bob McChesney plays with such control that he makes it sound easy, which is usually a common trait amongst professionals of virtually any field.

depends if you're on a 6 1/2 or a 1 1/2. Any good bass trombone player should use a 1 1/2 which actually makes anything in the fifth and upper fourth octave a bit hard to reach. Youll never need that for orchestral or wind music though

I wish i knew how good a player Bob McChesney was when i first met him around 5-7 years old. My dad (who plays bass trombone) and I ran into Bob at an audio show for high end speakers. My dad said hi and I drew a picture of cheese for Bob with the caption "Bob McCheeseney" Now im 15 pursuing trombone for a living and in awe that the technical masterpiece this performance is. Someday I wish to meet Mr.McChesney in person! Now with much more awareness for the greatness I'm in the presence of.

Bob's technique is flawless. It is great to be living in this digital age. When I grew up playing trombone (70s), there were much fewer opportunities to hear (and learn from) great players. I will begin searching for Bob McChesney recordings. Thanks for posting this.

+James Jenkins Then you'll do just fine (: I've been playing for about 5 years now and I can play the first 3 variations with some very little mistakes here and there, but overall good (:, you just have to work on note accuracy, articulation, tonguing ( double tonguing ), and high upper register. You can work on tuning when you want to and feel comfortable enough to play the first variation and after each variation you learn and can play, tune yourself and play the variations you know. I'd say play the tempo that Bob McChesney is playing at but I'd say about 10-15 beats less? And if you make a mistake it's fine just keep going (: you can fix it later, mark it, make a note of it, and fix it later, also in the video Bob is using a lip trill as he is using a regular tenor trombone, no f attachment, but if you have the f attachment you can use it to trill but if you feel like or think you can do the lip trill you can (: I use f attachment trill, but I'm working on lip trill

He was hardly playing most of the 32nd notes, all he had to do was get close to the pitch and keep a fluent sound and slide. When its that fast, the pitch didn't actually matter as much as the first and last notes. If you listen to one of the fast licks you will notice that he accents the last note and the notes in between you can't really hear.
