Some of the younger people posting here might not knnow this but Alfonso was in a famous Pepsi commercial dancing with Michael Jackson and his brothers when Alfonso was a kid back in the '80's. He's making fun of himself but he's really a professional dancer with a Broadway background.

Look up Classic Michael Jackson Pepsi Commercial (1984) He's been able to dance like this from a kid, and he's really good at it. I always thought his dances were just for fun and a joke but he can even tap dance!

Carlton was one of those characters that was made to stay not being the center of the show but the actor was so talented that pretty much everyone ended up watching because of him and eventually gave him a whole lot more of screen time because it was the chemistry between the two characters of him and Will that caught the audience

Will Smith may be the better looking of the two but Alfonso Ribeiro is definitely the better dancer!

Advice to anyone suffering from depression, anxiety, or enduring any sort of adversity: watch Carlton dance videos. Regardless of your mood going in, it's impossible to watch Alfonso do this dance and not smile :)

Watching this in the 90s, I was too young to appreciate what a genuinely good dancer Alfonso Rivera is. It's great to look at it again and still laugh, but also be super impressed.

Alfonso is such an phenomenal dancer. Very talented.

Alfonso Ribeiro is actually a very talented dancer and tap dancer too. Dude is mad talented. Loved everything he ever did in his career.

Oh my goodness! Can anything ever put quicker smile on your face than watching Carlton!

Yeah you're right. "Carlton" - Alfonso Ribeiro was trained from a young age. He was even in a Michael Jackson commercial when he was like 4 or 5 years old, dancing side by side with the King of Pop. Dude is truly talented, and the joke was (imo) that a poindexter, aka nerd, had such awesome dance moves moves. You see that even Mr. Cool, Will Smith, looked like an idiot trying to replicate the "Carlton Dance". That's not an easy dance move to master. It takes shoulder popping, hip movement, arm swinging, and impeccable footwork, not to mention musical timing. Compare: Carlton - 0:15 - 0:24 to Will - 0:25 - 0:28 You can see that Will knew he couldn't even begin to attempt that type of complex body control, so he tried to make it as humorous as possible.

This video really made me genuinely smile.. I didn't have to force it. I've been forcing smiles lately..thank you for this video 🙂

The story goes, the original plan was to find out if they could get Michael Jackson. Then they remembered Alfonzo Ribeiro was one of his backup dancers for a Pepsi Commercial. After a few rehearsals, Will Smith just had him go solo as a last-minute change out of respect.

The Carlton just makes you feel happy seeing it.
