In Latvia he is a legend. He actually played in KHL longer than 2011. His last season was 13-14, then he played in 2014 olympics for Latvia and retired.
As a lifelong Avs fan, it's great to see Cale Makar wearing Ozo's old number 8 for Colorado and continuing that offensive legacy from the blue line.
So underrated. He and Uwe Krupp perfectly complimented each other

I came into the comments to say the same thing!
Ozo was/is sn Avs Legend. Imagine him in the modern NHL😱😱😱
Ozo scored the first ever Hat trick in the Pepsi center against the Canucks and I was at that game
Loved this guy. Sad you didn't wear a Sharks jersey for sentimental reasons but wearing Avs makes sense of course.
96 ovr in nhl 2000. Same as Lidstrom and just behind McInnis with 97....tells how good this player was in his prime.

He was such a smooth puck moving defenceman
Great to see Ozolinshs name again. He was great for SJ and Avs. I barely remembered he was a part of that Ducks team in 03, it went downhill quickly after that.

Well he was a alchohol addict,he even missed a world cup for latvia because he went off the road againd before it started, in latvia there is even rumours that he had a tab on one bar where he went on hes drinking rampage for 3 months. but luckily he became back even stronger men and more legendary for us in Latvia,he is a legend here and always will be!
my favorite fun fact about ozolinsh was that all-star game where he played against his teams conference. he had been traded midseason, and the team he was traded from was hosting the all-star game (i think it was Florida) so he represented them, despite not being on their team anymore
@Therichmond35

Thats true, in Florida. Left no hard feelings, at least thats what was said in media.
I'm surprised how you forgot to mention him ripping off the Panthers patch from the All-Star game jersey after his trade to Anaheim. Great video and great to see more Latvians represented here anyway!
Sandis was just helluva good at his peak best!
Greetings from Latvia! Thanks for the video
One of my favorite all-time players to watch. He had a huge shot from the point and the Avs used to feed him one-timers.
A legend, unfortunately he struggled with alcohol during his career. If he was more disciplined maybe we would be talking about a Hall of Fame player. Super talanted, and also a leader on the ice

I was really excited when the Rangers added him. We had just overhauled our defense after the lockout. Besides having the Jagr line, Henrik stole the show in his debut season, so all we needed was a real threat from the backline. It was always a wild ride with him on the ice, but 14P in 19GP at basically a 60P pace really added a missing dimension to the team. And it only cost a 3rd that we previously got for Ville Nieminen. Nemo for Ozo is a pretty darn good trade, right? He got absolutely TORCHED by the Devils in the playoffs, got arrested shortly thereafter, and then absolutely stunk the following season. Rangers fans are/were not kind to him, and it's a real shame too, because he still had some hockey left in him when he eventually got his poop together and then went to the KHL. 109 PIM in 43 games??? Where did that come from? He remains one of those "what if" stories, because he could have really made a difference in those next two runs with Jagr at the helm.

@@kendoform he started to drink heavily because his best friend Sergejs Zoltoks died on ice during 2004 lockout. As he said in iterviews' there was no way back' . But then he managed to quit and look at his stats in KHL, as a 40ish old veteran he still was one of the best

He wasn't a bad dude at all. Kinda shy because of the language barrier but he was super popular with Avs fans. His drinking issues were depression based because of the loss of a good friend. For being a fast skating and gambling type D Man, he was actually a pretty introverted guy.

He is also the great person!
As a longtime Sharks fan I will always remember Sandis Ozolinsh for 2 reasons. I remember him choosing to pass the puck to Igor Larionov on a 3 on 2 during overtime of game 6 of the 1994 2nd round series versus Toronto when he had a wide open net to shoot at. Now there is no guarantee that Larionov buries it but that's also after Johan Garpenlov has clanked it off the crossbar which would of ended the game also. My 2nd reason for remembering Ozolinsh is that he was traded for my all time favorite Shark in Owen Nolan. Like Shannon says this trade benefits both teams.
My favorite defenseman ever.
Yes, Latvians know who Ozoliņš is.

01-02 the rare 83 game season. See it happen in NBA more often I would say This is of course excluding the 84 game NHL seasons there were for a couple of years
ooh an 83 game season for Sandis in 01-02. Always find that funny when you see that pop up on stat sheets. Wonder how man times that has happened after the nhl went back to 82 game seasons.
@andrewjmschroeder

Guerin played 85 games in 2000-01 and Rem Murray played 85 games in 2002-03. They have the highest single-season number of games played since 1994-95.

Didn't Guerin get 40 that season as well? Prob most of them with the bruins but still crazy
One of my all time favorites
Ozolinsh was one of my favourites during the 90s when I was a quite hard Avalanche fan. To big audience he might be a bit forgotten and 'underrated' because of all those even bigger names on those late 90s Avalanche teams.
Really liked Ozo on the Canes for those two years, good upload
Also why the offense dropped in florida and anaheim, was that he was dealing with major alcohol problems.
One of my favorite player ever, who also played 3 out of 4 teams I cheer for.
I can still remember Ozolinsh in the playoffs against Detroit. Oh Boy!
I had (and still have) a bunch of hockey cards of this guy. Instantly remembered him when I saw the video.
I am simple man. See video about fellow country man, click fast as I can and watch it.
Great video! I always appreciate his time with the Sharks. It was rough but Nolan being the return for his trade cemented the Sharks identity for a while.
Sandis Ozolinsh was one of my favourite Sharks player.
Best thing he did for us in Carolina is get us Brett Hedican and Kevin Adams in a trade with Florida. We won the Southeast that year. And went on 2 cup runs winning 1 with Adams and Hedican being key pieces.....
OMG Shannon thank you!
He was one of my favourite defensemen growing up, I expect Cale Makar to smash the Avs record for most points in single season by defenseman.

Dude YES! I have been waiting for this
I most remember him for the Sharks especially when they beat Detroit in 94. He was unreal.
Keep these careers videos coming love them!
I remember wanting Ozolinsh on detroit back when he first came up with the sharks. I figured a guy like Konstintinov would offset his lack of defense. Looking back however, I just dont think he would have been a better fit than Fetisov with the russian 5.

Thank You, great video!
Fun to do, and watch and listen to. I like the mention of the tie-ins with Irbe.
As a Colorado native having seen the Avalanche from its inception, I have to say that the trade to get Ozolinsh was one of the most important for their cup run. You look at Colorado's defense before the trade they had Foote, Krupp, Lefebvre, Wolanin, Klemm, and Leschyshyn. There is zero offense on that blueline till Ozolinsh gets there. You can sacrifice first overall pick Owen Nolan, straight up, for Sandis Ozolinsh to get some offense on the back end. I really believe the Ozolinsh trade is one of the most savvy and underappreciated trades maybe in the history of the NHL.

Finally a video on Sandis Ozolinsh!
Lets go OZO!!!!
Thank you, I was going to look him up and you did it for me. Was to lazy.
It's John-Michael Liles who's numbers Makar must top to become best offensive defenseman in a certain franchise's history. Love Ozo through.
great avalanche career then i always figured he got traded for being an alcoholic. i remember being excited to see him again on that magical ducks run.
Shannon you mentioned ozolinsh as a member of the iihf all-time team for Latvia.. got me intrigued to find what’s for Canada .. apparently there is person called Sean Burke as the all-time goaltender for Canada .. who is this, never heard of him before .. when we have a great list of Canadian netminders.. I was checking the Wikipedia page for this iihf list.. I assume the data on the page is correct but why such a glaring error..
I can only hear this name in Corwins voice in my head
Ozolinsh and Irbe played together with the Sharks
Could you do a career of Derian Hatcher please?
I love Sandis and My grandfather had his jersey! Unfortunately, he donated it to a thrift store, just as I was getting interested in hockey
You are great on the Steve Daniel podcast
Great player.
Ozo is the solution to the 3/30/2024 Gordle and the toughest for me to date. Struggled due to the variants of his family name. Almost threw my phone but laughed at the challenge afterward.
He was one of the best offensive defensive men
loved Sandis Ozolinsh, he had one of the best names in nhl history. All those Colorado records he has will probably be broken by Cale Makar however
Awesome vid, cheers from Latvia!
Ozo was the real deal in offensive side. Things you dont know, He had Problems with alcohol, so that was a real problem for him. As He have said in interwievs, that was hes biggest demon and hes Carrer could have been even better
please make a video about Sergei Zoltock
