it was planned to be a trilogy from the start. ADV purchased the rights to make 3 feature films, 5 TV series and 3 direct-to-video projects

I honestly believe that Evangelion isn’t a story you can tell through the confines of a two hour long movie. (even with sequels and TV attachments) While it would’ve been very interesting to see what WETA can do to visually bring the Evangelion universe to life, it seems a live-action Eva adaptation was never really meant to be.

In terms of tone, Shin Godzilla was pretty much the Evangelion movie, in a visual sense, Pacific Rim is probably the closest we have gotten so far

While having Spielberg and Bruckheimer would have been interesting, I feel they would have marketed Evangelion: The Motion Picture as something along the lines of Michael Bay’s Transformers- they would put too much focus on the action and spectacle, make feel it artificial. Evangelion is too close to Anno, it is like a mother to her child. Without Anno, Evangelion would not be Evangelion. The series is an amalgam of Anno’s life and his struggle with depression; he poured his entire soul into it, EVA is his lifeline. Now, if Anno was chosen to act as either director or writer or both, then the film would have had more focus, it would have felt more genuine. Having him take command would have been perfect! He already has experience with live-action as evidenced by the Joy of Man’s Desiring sequence in End of Evangelion, his films Love & Pop, Shiki-Jitsu and his Ultraman college parody. But of course, this never came to be. A huge missed opportunity. Guess the closest thing to a live-action Neon Genesis Evangelion that fans would get would be Shin Godzilla, which I am perfectly fine with.

Great work putting this retrospective together dude! It was both informative and engaging. If you ever want to do another one of these, I recommend taking a look at Chaiyo's multiple attempts at making an Ultraman series/movie without Tsuburaya's permission.

When I first watched Eva I knew nothing going in other than what you described boy was I surprised

I was glad that WETA was involved because when I think of WETA I think quality and passion.

The longer it takes to get an EVA movie the better the cgi will be.

so weird how they said this movie couldnt happen and yet we did get Pacific rim, with a few redesigns and story beats, we could have gotten a cool evangelion movie

I remember being ready to watch it then boom gone

To be honest, I think that someone like Christopher Nolan could direct a film adaptation of Evangelion. His style actually really fits the style and story of Evangelion, with the only thing that's different being the overblown visuals. But I think fans could enjoy a more grounded take on Evangelion so long as it had the substance the series is known for.

I think Toby was gonna star and produce a movie based on another Macha franchise (forgot what it was). But he lost the rights.

I feel the closest film we have to a live action Eva is Jordan Peels NOPE the alien is absolutely inspired by the angels and does a terrific job at portraying their scale and fear of the angels I feel he could pull a film like that off but I doubt he would want to since he enjoys original films

To be honsest idea of live action hollywood adaptation of Eva make me feel incedibly sick.

the only thing i didn tlike i saw about the films in this video was the different looks of character and possibly different name changed

It would be cool to see this in a live action setting, but I don’t think you can make an anime this influential and special into one

A live action Eva would require so much money and effort to make it look good and overall make it acceptable and it would be hard to please the fans, and it would have to actually made in Japan with American directors and a variety of successful film companies

So we were going to get a live action Eva movie, but didn’t. Way back, after first Pacific Rim movie was released, I heard rumours that Guiliermo del Torro was involved with Evangelion movie. And that Pacific Rim was born del Torro's ideas, concepts and snippets for NGR movie.

Well that's false because Gullermo del Toro has never seen Evangelion and Del Toro acknowledged that he got his influence from Patlabor, Tetsujin 28 and other anime from his youth.

@@juniorgarcia5462 I even heard (but it´s rumors so take it with grain of salt) that Del Toro dilibertly avoided watching Eva to not gen too much inlduenced. Also, Hideaki Ano is heavily influenced by things he like in his work

Such a shame alot of that concept art looked very cool and promising. :(

I still believe it will be made sometime in the future, Evangelion is too amazing to just let it go.

I rememeber see these concepts on anime magazines here in Brazil. On that time i concidered that. Today i beg for hollywood never toutch anime culture.

I genuinely think a live-action EVANGELION movie could work, with official media such as "Another Impact" and the mobile phone ad "It Can (Not) Be True" showing as much. I'm just not too sure about a big western studio being behind it would be a good idea, but who knows?

Evangelion 1.0. You can (not) Produce

Just finished the Manga of this today. Honestly, it doesn't need a live action film/ Well, I think that anyway. Like with expansive story of 'Akira' (That I also just finished not long ago) and the most recently fairly tepid US live action remake of 'Ghost in the Shell', I think the amount of budget, time and scale needed to make the film and bring in all of the themes and threads and flashy anime style, and the very 'Japanese' feeling behind the character arcs and treatments, it would fall short of expectations across the board. Granted, they could; Bastardise it for a simpler plot, and condense the bigger concepts into little tid-bits and spread it out over many films. Co-direct with a Japanese company, have a better balance but a very obvious split in sensibilities and film making, possibly making the film uneven. Leave it up to Japan to make the live-action movie to test the success and audience reactions, then remake that. But really, I think something like this is made for animation/graphic novel realms. For as much money being spent on a movie like this the amount of computer animation needed to bring everything to life would render most of the film reliant on CGI anyway making it a pretty much animated movie. This might be a case where lightening was caught in a bottle in the mid-nineties boom of anime, and doesn't need to be tampered with anymore.

If someday Hollywood will end up doing a Live-Action Movie of Neon Genesis Evangelion (and they will do it. Maybe not today, maybe not tomorrow, but someday they will do it!) then I want James Cameron as the director. Christopher Nolan and Dennis Villeneuve are also good choices.

Biggest problem I see with that concept would be disonance between massive budget for all set pieces and action sequences while making it accesible for broad public. Cause your averedge hamily that goes to cinema 5 time a year will not be interested in movie about kids having mental breakdown while giant monster rip their intestines out.

Daniel Radcliffe could be a good shinji, he has the emotion and experience needed fpr him, but, it would be kinda shitty using a american actor for a japanese character. Also, i think a eva live action could work, but they will need multiple movies where most of them would only work with an open ending. Like one where the last scene is shinji screaming inside of eva 01. Plus, it would need to be made by people who understand and love eva.
