I'm Cambodian. When we got to America in 1983, my parents, especially my mom always told us to never cause trouble and to study hard. They said that we should always strive to do better than them. But they always stress that to never ever get into any trouble because we are foreign here in the states. She always said that this is America, not Cambodia. Follow rules and get a great education. We can build wealth and then we can go visit Cambodia to see if we want to go back one day. Thanks to my parents, i have always kept my nose clean and stay out of trouble. Applyed for citizenship for myself and the rest of my family. So glad I did it back in the early 1990's.

Dad knew I was always getting into some dum shit, and mom warned me every time I stepped out the door at night. My father became a citizen and urged me to do the same, but I was to stubborn and just wanted to chill with friends , my father passed away a few years later. And I lost my mind but mom pushed me back into the right direction, at 21 I became a citizen while in college in Pittsburgh. When I returned home most of the friends I used to chill with we're all deported back to Cambodia .as I got older I realised how important the warnings were and the lectures my parents gave me.

Maybe they weren't raised right...blame the parents, my parents warned me when I was very small that I was a refugee & I need to keep my nose clean or I'll get deported. Have not broken a single law, have never gotten a single traffic ticket. Just became naturalized last year. It was hard, long & expensive but totally do able if you're clean.

My parents are cambodian they came from cambodia and got there citizenship! They always tell me im lucky to be born here! And tell me that people who got deported had a golden opportunity but they blew it!!!

well you came to the country as refugee so used a lot of social security benefits and assistance you commit a crime land a year in jail and you are shocked that you have been deported...its sad but but this is reality and what did you expect?

The video says that Khan's family arrived to the US as refugees in 1985 when he was a year old. That means, they were eligible to apply for citizenship around 1990. Even if his folks were lazy on getting citizenship, he could have gotten it on his own when he turned 18 around 2002. He was charged with a deportable crime in 2004. Ultimately, he's responsible for the predicament he is in.

All walks of life of the Cambodian population come to the USA as refugees, some of them are farmers or uneducated people and as a result never passed on the importance of education to their children. They will warn them, but no real effort or resources were put to back it up. Everything ends up with fate anyway.

as a korean-american, I have absolutely zero sympathy for these criminals. My family also fled the aftermath of war and the cruel life that came about after the slaughter of 2 million of my countrymen in the span of 3 years. but I saw america as an opportunity. these criminals saw a free ride. It comes down to culture. when you come from a country with a strong cultural foundation of hard work, education, respect for the law and an incredible desire to succeed, you will flourish. when you come from a culture that doesn't promote those traits, you get tattoos on your neck and talk like a rapper. No wonder the english schools don't want them. Koreans have had it just as bad as cambodians if not worse throughout history. in 1950, our GDP was pretty much the same, but we thrived back at home and in America in just 1 generation. let this be a lesson, stop accepting immigrants from countries that produce subpar second generation citizens.

Darth Utah 66 none of them were born here. I guess you missed that part in the beginning. If they were born here you are a citizen regardless of the immigration status of your parents. All these people were born in Cambodia. They were refugees who’s families fled the turmoil in Cambodia in the 80s. One of the stipulations in taking refugees in was having the ability to deport habitual criminals back to Cambodia. They leave a lot out of the story in this clip. Including the fact it wasn’t these people’s first run in with the law that got them deported. Look at how many thousands were taken in and they said in this piece that around 500 over the years have been deported. That’s not a lot and again it’s not like they just did one thing wrong and got deported. The huge issue I have with this piece is how little accountability these people have. They say “America put me in this situation”, “THEY sent me here”, “THEY did me wrong” these people put themselves in the situation to be deported back to Cambodia. They even mentioned how the Cambodian locals have MO SYMPATHY for them because they view them as ruining their own “golden ticket” which is true. A little accountability goes a long way.

Which the cause of deportation generally revolves around the FOREIGNER having illegal status within the country that’s deporting them or because they committed ANOTHER crime while in that nation. Because just entering the country ILLEGALLY is a crime lol. Do I need to give you the definition of legal and illegal as well? Lol

I was a refugee from Cambodia to America in 1980 when l was 9. I got my America citizenship as soon l turn 18. I got arrested and l was never deported for a crime. Every legal immigrants should get citizenship or don't break the law if you don't want to be deported. My stepbrother live in America for 40 years not a citizen and was never deported

It's absolutely mad deporting people to a country they have never lived in.

Doing this to someone who only committed a crime as a juvenile (and was raised in your country), and who hasn't reoffended since, is absolutely uncalled for. You can't argue things like safety with cases like that, and it's pretending the country's social etc. issues had nothing to do with it.

The problems are also; one, when you are young, you WILL make mistakes. Two; sometimes Crimes are committed by Association guilt. Three; being a Minority in America is already an Unjust platform; this I know very well. It is unjust and cruel to deport people into Foreign cultures just because you're genetically linked.

That is frightening especially if born in the US or moving here when a child. At least if he came as an adult he would know how it was over there, it's as if he is a regular citizen being deported in that sense, not an illegal immigrant if they were born here. I mean, it's understandable to an extent but should only be for extreme cases.

Im British originally and lived in the USA for years and so became a USA Citizen and now I live in Cambodia. These guys should not have got involved in the gang life plus if they were Citizens they would do jail time but they cannot be deported if they were US Citizens holding a USA Passport.

Many Cambodians had to join gangs to protect themselves from other groups. Just like the video said, Cambodian refugees were placed in the worst areas in California and were picked on. They had to make gangs to protect their community.

Working for refugees for many years, this deportation can be easily prevented. He was 1 year old when arrived in America. It was very easy to become U.S. citizen in 1985. We always urged the Southeast Asian refugees to become U.S. citizen, but some refused even to get free help. We provided education again and again that they can be deported, but some still did not listen, until it happened and it is too late.

If the deporting country is paying for Cambodia to accept these people, why doesn't the $ go to the deported to help them transition ? So messed up. This IS inhumane.

One of the men said his Cambodian daughters are half American. He is a deportee, supposedly striped of his permanent residency and all related rights, and he thinks his daughters are half Americans? How did this happen?

there could be 3 things he meant by this. the first being that his daughters may have been born in America & were simply visiting him via relatives. secondly, he may have had them in Cambodia & because he was living in America at one point, considers himself to be an Asian-American, hence his daughters being "half Americans." lastly, the kid's mom may have been white American, which would allow his children to have a successful future in America, with or without him. unfortunately, none of these scenarios would allow him to share their future in America.
