The Très Riches Heures is a Book of Hours created by the Limbourg brothers for the Duke of Berry between 1413 and 1416. A Book of Hours was a common book (manuscript) of prayers during the medieval period and included a calendar giving important dates of feast days, times of prayers during the day with the prayers and psalms and extracts from the Gospels to be recited. It was created for lay people who wished to follow monastic religious devotion.
The calendar pages in the Très Riches are some of the most beautiful illuminated pages of the late medieval period and are the high point of the artistic style known as International Gothic.
