The best thing about this game is how innocent it looks until the 19th test and then it's a sci fi horror until the end. I actually felt scared when I got betrayed by Glados. No game has the same amount of impact as portal.

The game project, called Narbacular Drop at the time, was only a project being worked on, but when the students got to meet Gabe Newell, he was so impressed with the work that he offered them all full-time jobs at VALVe. The team was put to work and, using the majesty of the Source engine, created what is now known as Portal.

also fun fact: Portal was put in the same universe as Half-Life because they had to borrow assets from Half Life 2 due to a low budget

idk about you but portal one is the most frightening game of all time. in most games there are assets like trees or grass but in portal everything feels so industrial and cold. and the feeling of loneliness is so well captured. in its final act where you kill Glados you get a glimpse of the outside world and i has never felt so alien from the world i entered. during its puzzles, when glados is silent and when the turrets are absent. you begin to hear the music and the music is the most loneliest thing I've ever heard it makes you feel like your in a large field devoid of life. and that's why portal one is my favorite game.

2 years later and it's still one of his favorite games. and 15 years ago it was just a small game. now it's a huge series apart of the half life series

It did for me as well but the puzzles for that were absolutely amazing... except for Test Chamber 22... it's puzzle was bs as it broke the game's own rules and it was the only time I truly was stuck and had to look up what to do Portal: Reloaded - Test Chamber 01: AI Voice: "This future version of the cube can be moved freely without affecting its counterpart in the present. Whats incredible is that Portal 2 is a better sequal in pretty much every aspect and that is saying a hell of a lot when Portal 1 is already such an amazing game. It's one of those great games where you expect the sequal to be worse or the same, then they top it substantially, making it one of the best series of all time IMO and definitely the best puzzle games. GlaDDos is a villain that is so amazingly done that everyone loves her and wants to be friends with her, even though she wants to kill them.

This is so nostalgic comming back to portal, jeez. I played portal when I was like 12 on my X-Box 360 and I absolutely grinded that game and tried to get my abosule best speedruns. Watching jacksepticeye struggle trough the different levels just gives me memories of when I played it for the first time, absolutely a banger! I even OBLITERIATED my controller because I couldn't get past the momentum part 🤣love you jack, you're my childhood

The guy who wrote all of the messages was “Doug Rattman”. He was a scientist who survived the initial slaughter from Glados. Those secrets spots are called his “dens” if I remember correctly. And you can actually hear him rambling to himself in Portal 2 if you go into a secret area. Doug Rattman is actually my favorite character, even if you never see him. Edit: Holy shit, I did not expect to get so many likes. Thank you very much!

The best part about Rattman, is that the only times we ever get to see him is in a comic and a LEGO game. In the LEGO game you actually see him in the flesh... but it’s a lego game so you can’t really make out any definitive appearance traits besides hair since everyone’s looks and body shapes are similar in LEGO.

Without him, Chell would have died. Sadly though, we never find out if he actually died at the end of the comic. Doug "Ratman" was the one who wrote all the stuff on the walls. He was a scientist (not a test subject) at Aperture before it all went to hell. Being the only person left alive after GLaDOS killed everyone else, he went crazy hiding in the walls, having no one but a companion cube. I went down a rabbit hole about the lore and secrets of this game years ago. I learned all there was to know of the backstory. (Don't remember half of it now though)

Nova Pynx dougs companion Cube became his conscience she flooded the centre with deadly neurotoxin and when chell killed Glados and got knocked out he saw a robot dragging her back in he followed the robot and put chell up to the top of the wake up list so she got woke up and he tried to go back to his secret spot and then got shot by a sentry

Portal was not a mod. Portal was inspired by a college project named “Narbacular Drop” which had a simplified version of the portal mechanics. Valve saw the project and hired the students who made it to make Portal

6:23 actually the game was originally made by some students in a school! it wasn’t called portal but it was a puzzle based game (with shitty early 2000s graphics, might i add) that involved the use of blue and orange colour coded gateways that you could place to avoid obstacles in a dungeon, with monsters and stuff. someone at valve saw the idea, liked it, and hired those students to work on the project that became portal! portal wasn’t even meant to be a big deal, it was just a bonus in the orange box, but people liked it so much they made a second game :)

I've played every game in the Portal franchise (and the fangames) at least 3 times each, Portal games are some of the best games I've ever played. Coming back to Portal videos after I haven't been involved in Portal for over a year is so nostalgic. Def gonna play all the games again after this.

When Sean gets to chamber 17, I was secretly expecting him to get the joke. There's a fantastic video by Leadhead, where she goes over the joke (The video is titled "Comedy in Gaming - The Ultimate Balancing Act") In short, she states "Here is your new friend, it's a box. Everytime I watch someone play Portal, I think about pickles so I end up eating some. Ever since I did that, it has become a tradition for me to eat pickles whenever someone does a playthrough of Portal. Im still unsure if this is a good thing.
