It was just too early for people to appreciate dark Jim Carrey in the 90s, definitely an underrated movie.

This came out in 1996, and the early 90s were almost an extension of the 80s. We didn't really get to the "extreme" stuff until the late 90s. Even in '96, people expected their comedies to be wild and off the wall, especially a Jim Carrey comedy. There was that glorious period of about 4 years between 1997 and 2001 where you could do almost anything creatively and people respected it whether it worked or not. In 1996, people were still dipping their toes in the water. They weren't quite ready to cheer for the bad guy yet.

@Darkstar You have no clue. Carrey was celebrated for his roles in over the top comedy movies like The Mask, Ace Ventura, or Dumb&Dumber, his antagonist roles like in Batman Forever or The Cable Guy were getting mixed reviews from critics and viewers at the time. The only role in the 90s that he was heavily praised for that was somewhat serious and less total comedy was in The Truman Show. Blind&fanatic celebrity worship existed since decades earlier, and is not even what I talked about here, thats something you brought up.

He got into more serious films later but I feel like this is the best of both types. He really is a psychotic comedian in this.
Chip was supposed to die in the original version, but the ending was changed because the test audience didn't like it. So they went back & filmed some additional scenes where he survived.
I love how every part of the cable guys identity is just films and shows. From his aliases to the phases he repeats

Jim Carrey plays the obsessed creepy guy really well in films especially this and Batman Forever.
When this came out people were not expecting a Dark Comedy from Ben Stiller starring Jim Carrey and Matthew Broderick. My dad took me to see it in the theater and while I thought it was hilarious he was lost most of the time.

Yeah I don't think anybody was prepared for dark Jim Carrey
They made a ton of those "Stranger seems ok at first, then slowly destroys your life" movies in the 90s, so this was a spoof of that. Really ambitious feature directing debut for Stiller, even if lots of folks didn't know what to make of it back then. Funny how everything his character was saying about the future has come to pass now.

This is one of those movies that gets better the more you watch it. Jim Carrey is the man.
Note: Every time Chip does the music himself, he's also quoting a theme from another movie. (That's when they play the original) The medieval fight (17:00) was taken from a famous scene from the original Star Trek episode "Amok Time", even the weapons looked the same. The climb on the antenna (31:00) was Bernard Herrmann's Theme from "North by Northwest", a classic Hitchock movie. (The same guys made "Psycho").
@ericc8705
Жыл бұрын
Something else y'all need to realize is... the filming & editing of this movie happened way before the internet was commonplace. Just FINDING the music from "Amok Time" took nearly three days and driving all over town to locate a CD with that music on it. (I know, because I'm the Production Assistant who had to hunt it down and buy it from the record store) ... then we had to get the licensing rights to use it in the film.
@Cau_No
Жыл бұрын
@@ericc8705 Somehow I would have expected you to go to Paramount's vault and get the tracks directly from them as you had to ask for the rights anyway … I started collecting soundtracks around that time, so I know what it's like rummaging through stores and second hand shops … and eBay, when that became a thing. I'm sure I've got the CD you found in my collection too.
My head EXPLODED when I saw you two reacted to this 😂😂😂 There goes my afternoon!

Yes, this movie actually was intended to be a dark comedy. Several different references in this movie that probably most young people wouldn't get. Ernie and Chip Douglas are characters from an old 1950s/60s TV series called "My Three Sons". A kind of a sitcom where three sons are being raised by their widowed father. Ernie and Chip were two of the brothers, and Robbie was the oldest brother. "Father Knows Best" was another TV series from that same era, and Ricky Ricardo was Lucille Ball's husband in their 50s/60s sitcom. Great movie reaction guys! ✌💙✌

@@-M0LE all of you people who are obsessed with labeling so many things as “underrated,” need to start a cult where you can worship the word “underrated” since you love it so much! This movie was not as underrated as you you think… despite people calling it a flop, Jim got alot of credit for it. He got $20 million pay for it which was unheard of at that time for a comedic actor. He won 2 MTV movie awards for it. So there were actually quite a few people who liked it. It’s alot more appreciated now than when it was new. Me, Myself and Irene is way more underrated than Cable Guy

The boss at the beginning was on his ass because he knows about the separation. Guys tend to get depressed and in a funk - so naturally his boss thought he might not be up to the job or thought he might not get it done. He wasn't being an ass in context he just comes off like one. He just wanted to make sure he was emotionally and mentally able to handle the job.

11:50 Those glass basketball backboards actually shatter really easily. They are built with safety glass to avoid injury. They are not designed to hold a person's weight. That's why we were always instructed to never hold or hang on the rim. If you want to dunk, do it quickly then let go. Otherwise this happens. I've seen it IRL. xD
Great reaction. Not sure if anyone ever mentioned this but the "hello Clarise" line at Medieval Times was ad libed by Carrey. If you look at Broadrick's face, you can see him trying not to crack up.
This was Owen Wilson’s second movie (Bottle Rocket- which he co-wrote with Wes Anderson- was his first). It’s what started Ben Stiller (the director) and his long series of collaborations and co-starrings. And Leslie Mann and Judd Apatow met and got together on the set (he was the producer) and have been together ever since.
This is absolutely my favourite Jim Carrey's movie ever! Just amazing! I enjoyed watching you guys, nice Berserk cap!

About time someone actually reacted to this movie because it was very well directed, created and acted. Chip Douglas was a character on a TV show called My Three Sons, Larry Tate was the boss of Darren Stevens on a show called Bewitched starring Elizabeth Montgomery. The cable guy was a conglomeration of many TV and or movie personas and had no personality of his own. He did however have a psychotic trait that could be lethal if you crossed him and a good heart if you became his friend.
I feel like they REALLY wanted this movie to be a dark comedy, but Jim Carrey's "funny man" public image had them tone down the finale a LOT. I can see the movie they WANTED to make, but they fumble the end a bit. People weren't ready for scary Jim Carrey yet.
