One of the reasons I love this film is that its all about hubris. The controllers have done this so many times that they no longer are as careful or precise about the sacrifices as they might have once been. They're supposed to gather up and sacrifice a bunch of young people who fit certain archetypes (the Virgin, the Whore, the Athlete, the Scholar, and the Fool). The problem is, they get the archetypes wrong. They've assigned the roles to Dana (Virgin), Jules (Whore), Curt (Athlete), Holden (Scholar), and Marty (Fool), when none of them actually fit those roles. Dana might seem virginal, but early in the movie she confesses to an affair with her professor. Jules is sexy and dresses skimpy, but she's also flighty and overly concerned with non-important things in her life; also she is in a clearly loving and utterly monogamous relationship with Curt, which hardly fits the whore archetype. Curt might seem like a jock, but his athletic skills are mediocre at best, and he's seen lugging around high-level textbooks dealing with subjects like the Psychology of the Soviet System. Holden is smart, sure, but at the same time he's clearly more athletic than Curt is, and while he has the raw intelligence, he's clearly lazy about it. And Marty... well, Marty might be a stoner but he also admits he's never had sex in his life. So... Had the controllers done the research, they would have realized that the archetypes should have been assigned with Dana being the Whore, Jules being the Fool, Curt being the Scholar, Holden being the Athlete, and Marty being the Virgin.

you are right because Marty was meant to be the final girl ( or final guy in this case ) this being a horror movie, He was able to survive being killed early because he has that protection of plot armor, and he also can be the one that can save the others from getting killed because of said armor. when Marty saves Dana by the lake. Also if you watch the movie again, it is subtle but he was the one making all the observations and or discoveries that a final girl does in a horror movie. He found the camera, he found the tunnel, hell he was one telling them to let leave this damn basement and don't touch shit. We were focused on Dana, even we as the audience on the wrong person, Marty should be one that we follow from the jump.

@@TheTitandog70 I really like these takes. Because let me add a little something. The controllers sort of represent the audience stereotyping, like a mainstream audience couldn't accept a male "Virgin" for a movie to be a classic or a box office hit. So the controllers fark up through their own pre-conceptions when assigning those roles.

That could have made for an alternate ending when the ancient ones considered the group’s actual types instead of the ones assigned by the facility. The ground shaking, seeming like the end of the world, Dana gives some final words while smoking and slumps over dead from her wounds. The earthquake seems to intensify only to ease off and end. A glowing portal opens in front of Marty. He looks suspiciously at it, shrugs, gives a “what the hell” and stands up to walk into it. He comes out of the doorway of his closet into his bedroom. He looks around bewildered. He states out the window seeing the world at peace. END TITLE CARD

They did do the blood ritual for Marty, the one with the cup. But If you remember, after they did that, the frame shook, and it never did that with any of the other victims. It shook because the ancient ones knew he was still alive, and therefore, they were mad. It is such a tiny detail you don't really think about, unless you watch the movie again.

The Blonde was the smartest (intellectually) the bunch. The scientists messed with the hair dye to cause her to dumb down. (The sexy dumb blonde trope) The final girl trope, the stoner, the jock, all are needed for the sacrifice. But I thought making the smartest one a "dumb blonde" was really clever. There’s also a theory that nearly every employee in the Organisation survived a ritual at some point and are all virgins. They’re reward for surviving is working at The Organisation helping to keep the world from ending This can be supported by the fact that all those guys came into see Jules naked and also the fact that these people need to work and possibly live there to keep watch of everything not having time for relationships or family. Also how would they know about the organisation aside from Daniel who seems to be unaware probably because he was hired late. They would’ve need to be briefed about the history of it and what goes on and shown how to operate a specific section they are assigned to. To prove this even further you can see Wendy trying to flirt with Daniel in the control room and he just brushes her off. It’s a very dark theory but could be quite possible

The film is filled to the brim with cool trivia! It was shot in 2009, and Chris Hemsworth's performance here brought him to the attention of Marvel studios. The kids are the Scooby gang in all but name, if you count "Holden" as Scooby. The cabin itself is an homage to Sam Raimi's low budget horror, The Evil Dead. "The Ancient Ones"are in a sense the audience, demanding the story fulfill certain cliches. They're also an homage to The Old Ones, and the 20th century's greatest master of horror, HP Lovecraft (so named by the 21st century's master, Stephen King.) Nobody's yet made THE Lovecraft movie, but ALIEN, In the Mouth of Madness, and this film come closest.

Was really in awe when I was this movie. To take a genre and it's famous tropes and flip it on its head was just an enjoyable breath of fresh air to me. The homage to the creatures we all know and love, the clever 4th wall breaking while still kinda not breaking it and making it a key element of the story is amazing. Everything about this is just *chef's kiss PERFECT.

This movie is so good that I couldn't wait more than 3 and a half minutes into the video to comment about how much I love this movie. The best way to go into this movie is knowing next to nothing. I'm a big horror fan so all I was told when it came out is that it deconstructs horror tropes in a clever way and I was sold. One of the most unpredictable movie experiences of my life. This video being here has made my day. Thank you, Natalie!

I'm glad you didn't research too much into this movie. Good call, please never change, so that you can enjoy the twists and turns more :) This movie is a parody, with disgusting and unnerving aspects, and a serious plot / twist that people don't expect. I think the unexpected is the selling point of this film. And Marty is the embodiment of that, he's the unexpected hero, a badass, a smort boi xD

When they asked Sigourney Weaver to be in the movie, she had one condition: I want to meet a Werewolf. And god dammit, she got her wish. They had the guy in the full suit for her at the premiere, and there's a video of Weaver giddy like a child taking pictures with him. It's adorable XD

The Old Gods can be read as the horror film audience which expects to see the same stereotypes and tropes every time and if they don't, they become angry. That's why there's the quarterback, the hot blonde, the stoner, etc. That's why there has to be a sex scene, why there has to be a cursed object that sets everything in motion. That's why there has to be a final girl whose death is optional, etc.

I do love the connected universe theory that links Buffy/Angel to this film and to Firefly. The idea that this facility was run by the Initiative and that the Old Ones that awoke were the Senior Partners in Angel, with River in Firefly being the first active Slayer in 500 years.

When it came out, I was surprised how many critics failed to notice the manipulation and dishonesty of that organization. They talk about how the friends had to be punished through a choice of their own free will, but drugging them to alter their choices was somehow an okay part of the ritual. Also, the indifference of their work. The five friends were forced into the roles, regardless of the fit. The "jock" and the "brain" were flipped. Jules had to be drugged and have her hair dyed to make her a "dumb blond", and the "virgin" was just leaving an affair with her professor.

  • @scottrabie

Yes, they were "forced" into stereotypical roles of western horror, but they failed to identify the virgin and the fool. Marty is the only one that might be (and is probably still) a virgin and Dana is kind of a fool in many circumstances, like having an affair with a married professor.

Finally you took the plunge and watched one of the best movies ever made. Such a perfect blend of comedy and horror in this Joss Whedon produced film and directed by Drew Goddard. They both wrote the script and worked together previously on Buffy. I love how the initial start of the movie introducing all the characters was done and even mocked 80's/90's horror films and how they portray all the stereotypical cast. It's pure Gold, dare I say pure Natalie Gold!!!

12: 18 was the moment I thought to myself "Oh now I get it". I even started coming up with my own ideas for other countries England: A vengeful ghost of a jilted Victorian lover. Italy: A Killer who wears a Go-Pro so we see everything from his point of view. Sweden: Everybody realizes that life is meaningless and commits suicide.

Remember the rumbling after Marty "died" that didn't happen any other time? Still my favorite tiny detail is the wormy intern on of the screens using a sign to beg for help. My favorite joke has to be "Oh come on!?"
